The newest baby in the Machaba Collection is Ingwe Pan Camp situated in Mana Pools Zimbabwe. Not only is Mana a World Heritage Site, but it is also justifiably regarded as one of the top safari experiences in Africa.
Dictated by the rains, Ingwe, which sleeps a maximum of 16 guests in luxury en-suite tents, will open on the 1st May and close mid-November every year. Despite this shorter season, the diversity of the experiences on offer is both vast and unique.
Early in the season, just after the rains have ceased, the pan holds a lot of water and so is home to many of the usual suspects. From waterbuck to water-birds and kudu to kingfishers, they’re all in residence. Weather-wise, cool nights and warm days offer perfect conditions for walking from the pan to the nearby Chiruwe River. The terrain varies from baobab groves to mopane and riverine forests, perfect for birding whilst exploring unseen areas of the park. There’s always a picnic on offer too as all safaris are personalized and will revolve around the guests in camp, not a pre-set routine.
The main activity at any camp in Mana will always be walking, it’s what you come to Mana for and with our very experienced Mana guides, you’ll not only be in safe hands but will get to experience encounters that will stay with you for life. Walks take place, not only on our private concession around the pan but also on the adjacent Mana floodplain, famous for its wide, open spaces teeming with animals, especially elephant, some of them world-renowned for their ability to get up on their back feet to feed off the Albida trees. For those not wanting to walk, game- drives are always on offer as is an afternoon canoe trail on the magnificent Zambezi River. Often though, just sitting on your deck at the pan will bring you great wild-life sightings too.
However, it’s in the evenings that Ingwe brings out its trump card; it could be a big tom leopard, a massive black-maned lion, or countless hyena wandering down to the pan to drink under a night sky that is uninterrupted for 180 degrees.
Later in the season, when it’s hotter and water is scarce, the wild dogs join this parade, lazing around the pan before setting off for their early morning or evening hunts. It’s not unusual to see them drinking side by side with other predators in the extreme heat of October. The late season of September- November also sees the arrival of the big herds of buffalo and elephant cows who have come down from the pans that have dried up inland, or off the floodplain that is short on ground cover. It’s hard to beat going to sleep with the sound of an elephant bathing just metres from your tent. This is authentic Africa at its best.
