Tanzania’s Bush and Beach in November

Tanzania’s Bush and Beach in November

Ah, November… the season of respite when the rains finally sweep across the dry African plains. The smell of petrichor fills the air as storm clouds gather and break every few days in electrifying downpours that last a few hours. The bush is still sparse, but green leaves are budding on the trees and many trees are in bloom. In areas where migrations happen, animals such as zebra, wildebeest, many bird species, and even bats, are drawn by the promise of a season of plenty. Trees bear fruit, fertile plains shoot nutritiously rich grass, migratory birds are in breeding plumage and many animals begin to calve their young.

It’s a life-affirming time to visit the wilderness!

In Tanzania, the Serengeti’s sweeping savannas seem to last forever and are host to an ever-changing parade of animals. If you visit the central and southern Serengeti in November, you can witness one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles: the annual migration. Watching as an endless stream of wildebeest and zebra move across the vast plains, driven by unshakable and ancient instinct is mesmerizing.

Also in Tanzanian territory, Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast famed for its beautiful beaches and calm waters. Zanzibar is an excellent place to relax following a safari in mainland Tanzania and pairs perfectly with the migration. Days can be spent snorkeling and diving among coral reefs, sailing on a traditional dhow, and learning about Swahili culture. Stone Town, on the main island of Unguja, often known as Zanzibar, is a historic trade town with Swahili and Islamic influences.  As with the Tanzanian mainland, November is the month of the ‘short rains’ here. Days are still warm and balmy and sea temperatures are ideal, so don’t be put off by a few afternoon showers.

Southern Serengeti – Tanzania.

As a safari location, the Serengeti is unrivaled. The huge ecosystem is home to undulating grassy plains, complex river systems, the Big Five, and the yearly wildebeest migration. The migration is the world’s greatest single animal movement. There is an incredible sense of space and a variety of wildlife surrounds you in amazing numbers. The Serengeti is also noted for its dense population of carnivores, and seeing large cats up close is a highlight at any time of year.

While November is a rainy month, it normally only rains in the afternoons, making it an excellent time to visit the Serengeti if you want to witness the great migration herds in action. There’s nothing like seeing the world’s largest yearly animal migration, which includes two million wildebeest, as well as zebras, gazelle, eland, hartebeest, and predators looking for a meal.

At this time of year, you’ll want to stay in the Serengeti’s southern and central regions. The wildebeest herds are now in large numbers in the Lobo, Mbuze Mawe, and Seronera Valley areas as they migrate south toward fresh pastures. The central Seronera Valley is one of Africa’s most reliable leopard hunting grounds, but it’s also become a favored area for tree-climbing lions in recent years. Bird-watching is at its best in November as migratory birds are present and because it’s a slower season, some lodges offer discounted rates.

Zanzibar Archipelago – Tanzania.

The exotic and tropical islands of the Zanzibar archipelago are made up of 4 main islands and a handful of lesser islets.

Zanzibar is magical, a spice-scented haven in the Indian Ocean. Whether you’re looking for high-octane activities or peaceful coastal fun, you’ll find it here. Miles of palm-fringed, sandy beaches are lapped by tropical, blue waters. Coral gardens filled with marine life thrive in the warm water.

When the temperatures rise in November, the ‘short rains’ begin. During the steamy mornings, clouds build up and in the afternoons they break in magnificent, but brief, showers. Blue sky generally follows the downpours. Daytime temperatures average 93°F, so it’s still warm, and water temperatures reach 84°F by the end of November. If you brave the possibility of a few rainstorms, there’s fantastic diving and snorkeling to be had. November also has fewer visitors and better hotel rates.

In addition to relaxing on the white shores and in the aqua waters of the main island of Unguja, you can visit the World Heritage Site of Stone Town, Zanzibar City’s historic district. Learn about the cultural effects of seafaring traders and taste the delicious legacy of their cuisine. Get a glimpse into the town’s glorious past by strolling through a tangle of winding alleys and lively market stalls. Further north, you can discover the Jozani Forest Reserve and explore exotic spice farms.

Discover our Remote Southern Tanzania & Zanzibar  safari and enjoy wonderful wildlife sightings and Zanzibar's beaches in November.

Kenya: Increase in Masai Mara 2024 Park Fees

News from Sanctuary Retreats

Increase in Masai Mara 2024 Park Fees

We wanted to inform you that over the past few months, there have been ongoing discussions concerning the management and conservation of Kenya's national parks, game reserves and conservancies on how to ensure that Kenya is able to preserve some of its most treasured and vulnerable wildlife spaces in 2024 and beyond.

To do this the Kenya Wildlife Service and Narok County Government have announced the gazettement of the increases to park fees, please find the confirmed 2024 Masai Mara park fees below. We are informing our partners as these increases will have to be passed on for all new and existing/confirmed bookings from January 2024 as this is a government fee that is beyond our control.

Masai Mara:

The Narok County government is looking to implement the following changes:

1. Park fees are now only valid for 12 hours: from 6 am to 6 pm daily. The original park fees were valid for 24 hours from the time of entry.

° On the departure day, guests have until 11 am to exit to avoid incurring further park fees. This means that guests who are booked on afternoon departure flights will be subject to an additional day of park fees.

° This change has already been implemented by the Masai Mara Rangers and we are currently managing this on a case-by-case basis on the ground for 2023 confirmed bookings.

° The additional day's park fee will be applied to any late departures from the Masai Mara to all confirmed and new bookings.

     2. The proposed 2024 park fees will be increased by the following amounts:

° 1 January – 30 June 2024: The new rates are USD 100 for the low season, taking effect from January 2024.

° 1 July – 31 December 2024: The new rates are USD 200 for the high season, taking effect from July 2024.

We hope this upfront communication will assist you in communicating.

Tanzania: Ngorongoro Crater in the Green Season

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, in the Green Season

To visit Ngorongoro Crater in January is to witness the great miracle of new life. January is calving season and is also a delightful gap in between the rainy seasons this region experiences.

The photography opportunities are out of this world with green landscapes, stellar lighting and fewer crowds. The wobbly legs of newborn calves trying to stand up for the first time are quite the spectacle.

The brutality of nature dictates that predators follow when it is calving season. They are drawn from near and far to take advantage of the easy prey. The birds also make for epic sightings since many are migratory. Your camera will not rest during this extraordinary safari at such an opportune season.

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Right at the edge of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp and its brand-new safari tents sit amongst the region’s striking acacia trees. Facing south into the fernlike crown of the forest's canopy, the camp has a unique perspective on the wow-inducing extinct-volcano landscape.

All 10 of the classic canvas tents have been beautifully decorated and furnished with an earthy natural palette, highlighted with reddish-browns accents and the pale yellows of acacia blossom, complementing the biodiversity of this remarkable terrain.

The word ‘glamping’ certainly applies when describing these chic tents — as well as stylish wooden framed furniture, and luxurious beds, designer pieces such as butterfly chairs in rich dark browns add a touch of glamour.

An entirely new lounge area, a dining room with linen-covered tables and sparkling tableware, and wraparound decking have been created — all raised up to ensure panoramic views over the flat-topped acacias. Soft fabric cascades down from the tent-top, giving an elegant sense to complement the restful sofas and fauteuils, and the striking photography on show.

SAA celebrates 20 years of flying to Tanzania

#SouthAfricanAirwaysNews

South African Airways celebrates 20 years of flying to Tanzania

JOHANNESBURG. 16 November 2015. South African Airways, the leading carrier on the African continent, proudly celebrates twenty years of flying between Johannesburg and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

SAA introduced flights to this East African country on October 25th 1995 from when the route has grown from three flights per week to the current offering of twice daily flights between the two African cities.

SAA introduced a dedicated freighter service between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam on 15th January 2011. The service is once a week every Tuesday.
“Dar Es Salaam is one of the key destinations in our extensive African route network and we are proud that as an airline we contribute to the growth in bilateral trade and tourism between South Africa and Tanzania. The route has been sustained for twenty years due to the strength of SAA’s operations, its extensive route network, schedule integrity, service delivery and on-time performance.
“The strong historical ties between the two nations enabled them to create an environment where business, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges could flourish,” says Aaron Munetsi, SAA Regional General Manager for Africa.

The lifting of visas requirements in 2013 for South African passport holders wishing to visit Tanzania for holiday or business (for up to 90 days) further contributed to stimulating travel between the countries.

“South Africa and Tanzania have traditionally experienced strong bilateral and economic ties; with South Africa one of Tanzania’s biggest trading partners. A number of South African companies in the mining, banking, retail, and hospitality industries have a presence in Tanzania. A further positive development was that imported goods originating within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are now duty free which promotes intra SADC trade thus strengthening regional economic integration,” says Munetsi.

Johannesburg – Dar Es Salaam flights are operated by SAA’s new A320s, or A319s. The A320 offers a superior product in business class, which has also been well accepted by Voyager Frequent Flyers.
