Namibia: O&L Leisure | Strand Hotel Swakopmund Refurbishments

O&L Leisure | Strand Hotel Refurbishments

Update Strand Hotel Swakopmund Refurbishment - Building Remedial Works

This letter serves to provide you with an update of the progress that we have been making regarding the building remedial works, which started in November 2021. During the remedial works project, the hotel has experienced reduced bedroom inventory availability, because of the approach taken in replacement and repairs that are being done in the hotel blocks. We are sincerely, grateful to you our valued business partners for your patience and continued business support during this important building repairs period.

As stated in my previous letter, the focus of the building remedial works has been on improvements that focus on domestic water piping and the replacement of air-conditioning cooling towers. The project has progressed well, with block 1 and block 3 having been completed on the 16 May 2022. The following block, block 2, will commence from the 1st of June 2022 until the 15th of August 2022. During this period there will be a temporary entrance to block 3 outside the hotel. Our team will assist all our guests on arrival that are assigned to that block. During this period our Atlantic Spa has been relocated to rooms 101 to 104. All our treatments will be available as usual.

Our reservations and operations teams will continue to ensure that our guests are not inconvenienced by the works being undertaken. We will continue to ensure that your experience with us, in obtaining all the necessary communication from the time of your reservation, all the way to our guests checking in, is hassle- free.

Namibia: O&L Leisure - Mokuti Revamp Update

Mokuti Revamp Update

Ernest Hemingway wrote “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy.” Today is an exceptionally happy day for us as I have the pleasure to announce and share our official opening date for Mokuti Etosha Lodge with you.

In our last correspondence 4 months ago, we estimated that the revamp would take between twelve (12) to fifteen (15) months. Our project team is working tirelessly to remain on track with the envisioned refurbishment and today we can confidently and with great pride announce that our “Grand Dame” will be ready to welcome our valued guests as of 03 March 2023.

As we know, change is inevitable and in business change is vital. For Mokuti to remain a flagship safari destination, the upgrade is inclusive of the reception area, bars, dining room, kitchen, conference centre, pool bar-area and viewing deck, not to mention new activities that will be on offer. All of these will be brand new and ready to host our valued guests when we re-open, under the theme of “Africa Reimagined”! With this we will take each of our guests on a journey of rediscovering our African-Namibian heritage in a unique and contemporary way that is purposeful in capturing the imagination through the story that each element tells.

To ensure that you, our valued trade partners have a first-hand experience of our property, we will be booking site visits. You can also follow our journey of transformation and keep abreast of the changes that are about to come. Our reservation and sales teams are on standby and ready to assist you with any bookings or enquiries.

Namibia: OL Leisure: Mokuti Renovation Project 2022/23

Mokuti Lodge Renovation Project 2022/23

28.02.2022

We are heading into exciting times not only for our brands, but also the tourism industry, as travel begins to pick up slowly, both in Namibia and internationally. Having recently unveiled our revamped Midgard, we are excited for another one of our establishments to be transformed into a contemporary destination, whilst we preserve its 32-year character and heritage.

Today I share with you the exciting news that Mokuti Etosha Lodge will be undergoing a full upgrade. As a result of the construction to take place, the lodge will be closed as of 22 March 2022 for a period of twelve (12) to fifteen (15) months for the envisioned refurbishments to be completed.

The renovations will include a completely new main building (reception, bars, dining room, kitchen, conference center, including the pool bar and pool area, as well as the main entrance) will be demolished and rebuilt. The current Boma will also be demolished and relocated to a new bush location in a form of a new Sky-Boma. Current rooms will be upgraded, and additional rooms as well as new guest experiences and exciting activities will be added (e.g. conservation center, cultural village, new viewpoints, upgrades to the airstrip etc.)

Our grand dame, Mokuti, is ready for a facelift and keeping in line with our Purpose, “Creating a future, enhancing life”, we want to ensure that it will still be at the forefront of the hospitality industry in Namibia going forward. It is with faith in our future and the future of tourism, despite the unprecedented challenges we have faced, that O&L is investing in Mokuti once again and setting new standards for our country.

While this project was planned for a long time, key project requirements, including planning, financing and resourcing, were unfortunately delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These have now been put in place and in the current climate of uncertainty, we have taken the opportunity to proceed with this long-overdue project now, in a focused and purposeful manner. While Mokuti is already among Namibia’s top safari destinations, we now have the opportunity to totally reimagine the lodge and deliver what could be Namibia’s most loved destination under the theme of “Africa Reimagined”.

We look forward to this new chapter in Mokuti Etosha Lodge’s books and invite you to join us in this very exciting journey.

News from Strand Hotel

Activity at the Strand Hotel

To all our valued guests,

During the past year of 2021, many challenges were experienced as we traded. The Covid 19 Pandemic continued to present restrictive measures to us. The month of June and July onwards experienced domestic travel restrictions and curfews and restrictions to restaurant trading. Despite all these obstacles, we have remained resilient as your hosts and our teams were innovative in many ways.

We continued to engage all our guests, whether domestic, regional, or international, as we remained open to doing business. Some of them have said the following of us. “Popular hotel, along the beach with three different restaurants. Very amazing views too.

We ate at the Ocean Cellar restaurant, serving only sushi and other fish dishes. It's an awesome place to unwind, with an equally amazing view of the popular beach. It's a must when visiting Swakopmund”

“The hotel has awesome staff, wonderful people, exceptional food and good live music. Strand hotel is top notch. I’m definitely coming back and bringing my family with me the next time I come by the hotel.”

The first Midgard Taste Festival was a huge success and exceeded all expectations. A multitude of guests travelled from afar to experience this unique sensory experience.  The location with its beautiful scenery, tantalizing food and multiple, talented music acts did not disappoint.
The day started off with an unforgettable rugby match. The comradery between all fellow rugby supporters was not only felt, but visible to all in the Jameson man-cave. Everyone was cheering on their favourite team, the “bokke”, and the fans could be heard way into to Namibian bush.
Local artists, including Ray, Diolini and Chris B ensured that the spirit stayed at an all time high with their exceptional musical performances. After the rugby victory, many enjoyed a refreshing dip in the crystal clear blue swimming pools, indulged in champagne and a variety of wine tasting.
As lunch hour struck,  guests got together in the food court to enjoy a huge variety of delicacies, including vegan wraps, infused popsicles, kebabs and an assortment of traditional Namibian dishes, to name but a few.

Namibia: O&L Leisure Group today

O&L LEISURE TODAY

A Christmas message from Managing Director, Norbert Wurm

It is with a sense of accomplishment that I can share that the O&L Leisure Group has done quite well during 2019, whereby we continue to show healthy growth and find opportunities in a challenging market. This success is wholly attributable to our people, who are continuing to create memorable and unique experiences that our guests love. Our iconic properties look amazing and plans are in the pipeline to further enhance these at every opportunity (watch this space) as we strive to be a catalyst for positive change creating new realities and fulfilling dreams:

Midgard added the very unique accommodation in the new “Train section”. The Midgard Train complex is conveniently located in the MCE gardens and within a short walking distance of the main lodge where the hotel’s dining room, bar, lounge, TV Room, boma and various outdoor terraces, pools, etc. are located. This unique facility is made up of three stationary passenger train carriages. These three carriages share two separate male and female ablution blocks. The facility also includes 3 basic kitchens and separate dining room. In the garden courtyard area is an open boma fire pit and a wood burning barbecue area.
We successfully hosted the Taste event at Midgard and were overwhelmed how well the event was accepted and attended by all, which has emboldened us to immediately start working on the next set of exciting events.

Chobe Water Villas welcomed a new GM couple in 2019. They bring with them new innovative ideas, many years of experience and a passion for nature. New boats and offerings are in the pipeline.
Mokuti is excelling and Ivan, the GM, is doing a tremendous job.  Little extra touches in the rooms are creating a stir. New cocktail menus and other ideas, including exciting night games drives with experienced rangers are either implemented already or will be in the very near future.
The Strand Hotel has revamped the Brewer and Butcher and it looks “wow”. The menus are constantly being reviewed at all 3 restaurants as to tantalise guests to come back for more, especially over the busy Christmas period. The new beer garden, with its charm and tradition, is perfectly suited for corporate functions and bigger groups.

Our properties have featured prominently on television and other media with each and every journalist loving the charm, the facilities, activities and great cuisine that we offer our guests. We must never forget that it is people, especially our staff at O&L Leisure, that make our business the success that it is.  At O&L Leisure we believe that investment in our staff gives the best return on investment and one can clearly see that our family is a happy one. Training, career opportunities, expansion and so much more are constantly addressed as to make this family smile. We thank each and every one of you that has worked so hard to make this year great.
We plan to excite and entice our guests with new offerings for the year 2020.
As we look back and reflect upon the past year, with all our achievements and successes, we would like to show our appreciation for your support and continued loyalty during 2019. As we embark on this journey with you into 2020, we will embrace a future of continuous innovation to deliver new realities and fulfill dreams. You have been an integral part of shaping our business and for that we sincerely thank you. We wish you a very merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to connecting with you in the New Year – All the best for 2020.

O&L Leisure news

O&L LEISURE TODAY - 2019

It is a great privilege and with a distinct sense of pride that I join the beautiful and passionate O & L Leisure team!

I could feel the energy the first day I walked into the office and appreciate the warm welcome from the team.

I have been part of the O&L group for 10 years this year, starting my journey off at Namibia Breweries, then moving on to Pick n Pay Namibia, before now joining the O&L Leisure group. I am very excited about this new opportunity to help our business grow and with my love for nature, my passion for people and creating amazing experiences, I look forward to play my part in contributing to the success of O&L Leisure and her people.

Despite the usual challenges we can be very proud of what we, as a company, have achieved. We need to, continuously, look at improving the future, enhancing the guest experiences at our beautiful properties and identify breakthroughs for an even better O & L Leisure.

The future looks even more exciting: Our Vision 2025 of becoming Namibia’s most loved destinations through consistently delivering unique, unforgettable and personal experiences you love, has started in earnest and there are many exciting plans already being formulated to get us on that road.

Let us all continue to inspire each other and deliver amazing experiences to our guests in pursuit of this Vision.

A quick personal insight to getting to know me better:

I have been married to my lovely wife Sandra (who is also in the industry) for almost 10 years and we have 2 highly energetic daughters (who are the real bosses) aged 2 and 7.

I was born in the small town of Otjiwarongo in the central North of Namibia and spent my entire school life there. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant, I spent a few years exploring the world, combining work with travels, before realising that home is really where the heart is and thus I returned back to our beautiful Namibia – the best decision I ever made!

I am passionate about people and leadership. Nothing inspires me more to be able to help people succeed and be the best they can be. I hope this, combined with my love for Namibia and its beautiful outdoors, will allow me to play my part in taking O&L Leisure on the next step of its journey.

Now that you know a little more about myself, I look forward to, over time, getting to know you all  better and together creating a brighter future in the Namibian tourism industry and beyond.

Yours in hospitality,

Norbert
