Namibia: Wolwedans Collection Joins Naturally Namibia Family

Welcoming Wolwedans Collection to the Naturally Namibia Family

Naturally Namibia is delighted and proud to announce the newest addition to our family – the Wolwedans Collection.

At the core of Naturally Namibia’s values lies our dedication to providing unparalleled guest experiences, contributing to nature conservation efforts, and actively engaging with local communities.

While each partner within Naturally Namibia boasts its unique charm and character, we all share a personal commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences. Ongava Nature Reserve and AfriCat have earned international recognition for their outstanding contributions to nature conservation. Simultaneously, Namib Sky Balloon Safaris and Etendeka have excelled in community involvement, with the Namib Sky Community School being a project very close to our hearts.

Wolwedans Collection, nestled within the NamibRand Nature Reserve, excels in all these components of Naturally Namibia’s ethos.

The alignment of Naturally Namibia’s ethos with Wolwedans might not be a coincidence, as Stephan Brückner was involved in founding Naturally Namibia and shaping its ethos – a lesser-known fact, perhaps.

A visionary leader in the Namibian Tourism industry, Stephan Brückner continues the remarkable legacy of the late Albie Brückner, the founder of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Today, still under Stephan’s management, Wolwedans comprises five tourism properties, an active Foundation, and the Desert Academy – all carried by a bracing, forward-looking, holistic, and, at times, what some people would call a radical vision, themed “The AridEden Project”. In pursuit of the enduring objective to safeguard the Pro-Namib for generations to come, Wolwedans declares, “We strive to shift away from the passively consumptive tourism paradigm of the past and instead aspire towards a more engaged, active, and participative mode of travel – curated by a diverse array of experiences and activities that nurture the head, hand, and heart.”

Naturally Namibia: The Spirit of Mushara

Naturally Namibia is a collective of Namibia's most character-filled independent experiences. Authentic and original is the way we like it.

Dear Friends of Namibia

Tourism is finally picking up again and we are celebrating the birthday of the beautiful Mushara Lodge.

Ongava Game Reserve has inspired us with “Listen to Nature”.

The Spirit of Mushara

THE MUSHARA COLLECTION

On the 9th of May, the magical Mushara Collection has turned 24 years old. An absolute milestone for any company as longevity equals success in any format. We would like to extend a warm and heartfelt congratulations to Marc and Mariza Pampe and their team at Mushara from the rest of The Naturally Namibia family!

This wonderful African story all began 25 years ago when Marc started building the Mushara Lodge. The dream took a year to become a reality. When the lodge opened, the couple and their staff had their hands full with the arrival of guests streaming in from all over the world, so much so that when they were to marry later that year, Mariza famously served guests in her wedding gown!

A Catholic priest travelled to Mushara to wed the happy couple under African skies in front of a massive termite hill. As guests were being accommodated at the Lodge, everyone was invited to attend the ceremony, even though Marc and Mariza did not know them personally. Following their vows, and with no rest (or honeymoon) for the wicked, Mariza then proceeded to serve the Mushara guests in her wedding gown.

Over the years since then, that termite hill has sadly eroded, but the Mushara story has happily blossomed and grown.

The Mushara Collection offers luxury accommodation on the doorstep of the famous Etosha National Park in Northern Namibia. Located just 8 km from the Von Lindequist Gate on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park, and is an ideal home for visitors to explore the game reserve.

Following the spectacular Lodge, the couple added two exquisite Villas in 2003, with the interiors created by well-known Namibian designer Heidrun Diekmann. (The Villas have since been refurbished in 2018, where Heidrun once again worked her interior charms.)

They then followed the Villas up with the private Mushara Outpost in 2007. The Mushara Outpost was another addition of exquisite accommodation establishments, accommodating 16 guests in custom-made tent-like wood and canvas structures that are nestled on the banks of an ancient dry riverbed, known as ”omuramba” in the Herero language.

Finally in 2009, came the Mushara Bush Camp. The Bush Camp accommodates 32 guests and 8 children in custom-made tent-like structures and offers a down-to-earth tented bush camp experience which is well suited as an exceptional affordable base for independent travelers and families.

With all the above offerings the Mushara Collection was finally completed, catering to the most discerning traveller and offering a superb combination of splendid accommodation, exceptional cuisine and personal service for an unforgettable experience.

All of the above offerings would not have been possible were it not for what Marc and Mariza call ‘The Spirt of Mushara’ which refers to the staff they work with. They are extremely proud and thankful that the Mushara staff are at the forefront of The Collections’ success, going above and beyond any expectations from them and guests alike.

It speaks volumes that two of the staff members, Rosalia Nekwaya and Maria Kangoma, who attended the wedding between Marc and Mariza in front of the termite hill, are still with them today. 7 other members of staff have been there for over 20 years and another 16 have been there for over 13 years. One can certainly see why Mariza and Marc so value the people they work with.

On the doorstep of the magical Etosha National Park, The Mushara Collection is your optimal Namibian destination.

Once again, we send huge respect to Marc and Mariza for 24 years of incredible achievement, and here’s to many more.

Namibia: Ongava news | Онгава Намибия

Listen to Nature

Volume up! Today we are setting in motion Ongava's new crusade:

"Listen to Nature"

Ongava Research Centre's Dr. John Mendelsohn elucidates;

"The value of the ‘sounds/songs/melodies/tunes of nature’s silence’ offered by Ongava against the ‘hectic cacophony/racket/blare/clatter of the modern world’ which most urban dwellers have to endure each day: in short, ‘revisit peace to enjoy the sounds of silence’ at Ongava"

We're Back in Business!

Oh my, it's been awhile! The safari buzz is intense, are you feeling it? We've been sensationally busy! Our revamped camps opened in April with superbly trained and motivated Guides offering next level Bush Walk experiences, upgraded — mouth-watering — menus, and .. thanks to your incredible support, how to say this politely ... let's term it robust bookings for the year! Insallah.

Not only have the camps been a frisson of excitement, behind the scenes sees a system upgrade to CiMSO INNKeeper.

Listen to Nature

As our tangle with COVID-19 confirms, along with climate change, biodiversity loss and the myriad negative impact mankind inflicts upon our planet, it's more vital than ever that we listen to nature. While the term Nature First captures everything we stand for we'd like to inspire others to adopt the same philosophy. In fact we think Listen to Nature should be the "a diamond is forever" of the modern world! The expression is high level, timeless, endless, and really explains what we as humans need to do - as a society, we need to listen to what nature is doing. And just switch off and relax. And we think Ongava is the perfect place to do that. And Ongava does listen to nature in many ways, not only just by listening to the birds and beasts, but informs everything that we stand for. As one drills deeper the term has multiple facets. And will be framing our messaging and communication. What do you think, I'm excited to get your feedback?

Fly Namibia Safari Circuit

Travel Namibia

A practical planning guide

"Could Namibia be Africa’s most beguiling destination?  A country that offers longer vistas, a greater sense of space, more intriguing flora and fauna and a stronger sense of adventure than others? Its allure is undeniable, enticing travellers back repeatedly. Yet the sheer scale and emptiness that draws people also poses a logistical challenge. How do you choose what to include in your itinerary and how best to link them in the time available? Where should you stay and when is best to visit? We hope our 27-page overview will set you off on the right track..."

"I first got Namibian sand between my toes 26 years ago, and it’s remained there — at least metaphorically — ever since. It never surprises me that Namibia frequently jostles with New Zealand, Alaska and other wilderness heavyweights when we’re asked to vote for our favourite destination. Namibia is a traveller’s utopia: wild and rugged yet riddled with self-drive potential; a country so captivating and brimming with adventure, wildlife, epic landscapes and ancient culture that it quickly pervades your itinerary, stretching it thin. Two weeks become three; one visit becomes two. Before you know it, Namibia has wrapped you in its sandy embrace and won’t let go."

Travel Africa Publisher, Craig Rix, adds; "we know our readers look to Travel Africa for practical advice and ideas to help them plan their next trip. We also know they are desperate to escape to Africa’s wide open spaces once more, so the timing seemed ideal to encourage them to visit Namibia, and to give them some pointers to help them on their way. We hope it will help, as we all look to build and recover from the last few difficult years."

Wildlife Protection and Law Enforcement

Many of you expressed concern the woeful national economy, ravaged further by COVID-19, would result in dire consequences for the nation's natural resources. Here's the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism's opening paragraphs of the National Report for the year 2021:

"While a significant decrease in registered wildlife crime cases and arrests was recorded in 2020, there has again been an increase in some sectors during 2021. Compared to 2020, the overall number of registered cases has decreased by only 4.1 per cent, while arrests have decreased by 8.7 per cent. The number of registered cases related to high-value species has increased by 26.1 per cent (caused mainly by increases in pangolin and ivory trafficking). Cases related to high value species made up 39 per cent of all registered cases. The numbers of elephant and rhinos known to have been poached in Namibia during 2021 remain similar to those of 2020, but seizures of pangolin and ivory increased by 14.7 and 66.1 per cent, respectively.

It is important to note that much of the ivory seized in Namibia originates from elephants killed in other countries. Seizures of pangolin and ivory remain below peaks recorded in 2019. The number of rhino horns seized by law enforcement remains noteworthy – of the rhinos poached over the past two years, about a quarter of the horns have been recovered (not all horns have been directly matched to carcasses). This is an important success, particularly when combined with the substantial number of pre-emptive arrests (46 in 2020, 24 in 2021). Rhino crime is clearly a risky venture in Namibia. Many perpetrators are caught before they can kill a rhino; of those who do manage to poach, the contraband is seized in one of four cases – and the poachers and colluders are arrested. Meat poaching is an issue of great concern right across Namibia, and is receiving focused attention by law enforcement. Meat-poaching cases made up 49.9 per cent of all cases registered in 2021. After a peak in 2019 registered cases nonetheless declined by 18.2 per cent in 2020, and then by 14 per cent in 2021."

Namibia: Ongava: Compliments of the Season!

Ongava message:

Onwards!

The story of human progress is truly heroic. It is glorious. It is uplifting. It is even, I daresay, spiritual. It goes something like this.

YouTube Little Ongava video:

We are born into a pitiless universe, facing steep odds against life-enabling order and in constant jeopardy of falling apart.

We were shaped by a force that is ruthlessly competitive. We are made from crooked timber, vulnerable to illusions, self-centeredness, and at times astounding stupidity.

Yet human nature has also been blessed with resources that open a space for a kind of redemption. We are endowed with the power to combine ideas recursively, to have thoughts about our thoughts. We have an instinct for language, allowing us to share the fruits of our experience and ingenuity. We are deepened with the capacity for sympathy - for pity, imagination, compassion, commiseration.

These endowments have found ways to magnify their own power. The scope of language has been augmented by the written, printed, and electronic word. Our circle of sympathy has been expanded by history, journalism, and the narrative arts. And our puny rational faculties have been multiplied by the norms and institutions of reason: intellectual curiosity, open debate, skepticism of authority and dogma, and the burden of proof to verify ideas by confronting them against reality. As the spiral of recursive improvement gathers momentum, we eke out victories against the forces that grind us down, not least the darker parts of our own nature. We penetrate the mysteries of the cosmos, including life and mind. We live longer, suffer less, learn more, get smarter, and enjoy more small pleasures and rich experiences.

Fewer of us are killed, assaulted, enslaved, oppressed, or exploited by the others. From a few oases, the territories with peace and prosperity are growing, and could someday encompass the globe. Much suffering remains, and tremendous peril. But ideas on how to reduce them have been voiced, and an infinite number of others are yet to be conceived. We will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one. But there is no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing. This heroic story is not just another myth. Myths are fictions, but this one is true - true to the best of our knowledge, which is the only truth we can have.

We believe it because we have reasons to believe it. As we learn more, we can show which parts of the story continue to be true, and which ones false - as any of them might be, and any could become. And the story belongs not to any tribe but to all of humanity - to any sentient creature with the power of reason and the urge to persist in its being. For it requires only the convictions that life is better than death, health is better than sickness, abundance is better than want, freedom is better than coercion, happiness is better than suffering, and knowledge is better than superstition and ignorance - Steven Pinker.

Compliments of the Season!

Wishing you health and success for 2022

Namibia: Ongava News

Happy Days! With Namibia's third wave rapidly waning in time for high season, following last week's Nature Heals message, further good news breaking today: Namibia is removed from the List of Virus Variant Areas, Frankfurter Allgemeine 30.07.2021 - 13:11 Deutschland streicht afrikanische Staaten von Virusvariantenliste

Namibia: Ongava Camps Opening Date | Онгава Намибия

Ongava Camps Opening Date

Warm Greetings from Namibia, I hope this missive finds you in good health and spirits? After such a tumultuous year we would like to say thank you very much for your understanding and support as we navigated through the various trials and tribulations. The wonderful vaccines news, and taking cognisance of Guest and Agent feedback, we have a firm announcement of Ongava’s re-opening:

The Ongava camps re-open on Tuesday June 1st, 2021.

It follows that Ongava hospitality operations closure, previously April through December 2020, is extended to Monday May 31st, 2021. We sincerely regret the inconvenience for Guests affected. Ongava Reservations will be in contact with you for bookings affected by Ongava closure. Affected Guests are encouraged to select new dates with our no-fee change / no annual rate increase offer through to 31st December 2022, or, cancel, and be fully refunded.

The 2020 Coronavirus experience shows the seasonal decrease in northern hemisphere infection rates in summer, coupled with the roll out of immunisation programs. Based on this we believe mid-2021 will see safe travel commencing at scale. Please see below for more details on how we anticipate this to develop.

To further emphasise and mark the Ongava re-opening of hospitality we are extending two great Specials:

° in recognition of their selfless commitment and courage all bona fide Frontline Healthcare workers qualify for a full -35% off Ongava Recommended Rate up to 31 December 2022.

° the Ongava Long Stay Special - less 25% for bookings from four days and more - will also be available through High Season 2021.

For nature's sake

We are savouring the spectacular news on vaccine advances - thank you science. Now for the next mighty challenge - to achieve production, logistics and immunization at global scale will take years. That puts the pandemic end date around 2025 or longer. Or never if anti-vaxxers get their way.

The trickle of pilgrims and domestic visitors now braving the risks and travelling is currently insufficient to pay the rent for nature tourism. In the absence of safe travel at scale the failure of nature based tourism will be severe. Natural habitat will succumb to the cow and the plough. Decades of conservation successes are staring into the abyss of permanent failure. The rollback of conservation estate will be immense. And permanent. Appetite for global donations will become harder to stimulate as developed world nations look increasingly inward to address their internal challenges brought on by the pandemic destruction. With most community and conservation projects now running on charitable donations the prospects are dim. Nature based tourism may not survive another year. Never mind five or more years until herd immunity is judged to be sufficient to end the pandemic.

What are the options to create safe travel conditions at scale? Will Switzerland based non-profit CommonPass in partnership with The World Economic Forum and backing from The Rockefeller Foundation already engaged with 140 countries offer a system for safe travel at scale during the pandemic?

If CommonPass, and similar systems, succeed then economies, airlines, travel agents, hotels and lodges and their myriad support services will have a chance of survival.

We believe the Digital Health Passports will instill confidence in travellers and in the national authorities - as negative COVID-19 tests will become much harder to fake with digital technology that verifies the test with registered and certified pathology labs.

As the systems gain traction we believe that Digital Health Passports will enable safe travel at scale by mid-2021.

Irina, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Digital Health Passports and please use every opportunity to advocate for this technology among your friends, family, social and business network.

Safe travel at scale

For safe travel to resume at scale requires Health Bubbles / Safe Corridors / Vaccine Tunnels. Several major airlines will soon use a digital platform to assess passenger Covid-19 status; “The Commons Project, The World Economic Forum and a broad coalition of public and private partners are collaborating to launch CommonPass, a trusted, globally-interoperable platform for people to document their COVID-19 status (health declarations / PCR tests / vaccinations) to satisfy country entry requirements, while protecting their health data privacy.”

“JetBlue, Lufthansa, Swiss International Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic will begin the roll-out of CommonPass in December on select flights departing from New York, Boston, London, and Hong Kong.”

About CommonPass

CommonPass allows a safer return to work, school, travel and life by enabling you to share your health/vaccine status while protecting your data & privacy.

For global travel and trade to return to pre-pandemic levels, travelers will need a secure and verifiable way to document their health status as they travel and cross borders. Countries will need to be able to trust that a traveller’s record of a COVID PCR test or vaccination administered in another country is valid. Countries will also need the flexibility to update their health screening entry requirements as the pandemic evolves and science progresses. Airlines, airports and other travel industry stakeholders will need the same. The Commons Project together with The World Economic Forum is working to initiate the CommonPass framework to address those challenges.

CommonPass is not a contract tracing app and does not collect location information on its users, except for when explicitly granted by the user. In addition to being GDPR compliant, CommonPass allows individuals to control who has access to their data and when. At any time, an individual can remove their personal data from the CommonPass app.

How it works

The CommonPass framework will allow individuals to access their lab results and vaccination records, and consent to have that information used to validate their COVID status without revealing any other underlying personal health information. Lab results and vaccination records can be accessed through existing health data systems, national or local registries or personal digital health records (Apple Health for iOS, CommonHealth for Android). Apple Health and CommonHealth let individuals store their health records securely and privately on their phones, entirely under their control.

The framework will assess whether the individual’s lab test results or vaccination records (1) come from a trusted source, and (2) satisfy the health screening requirements of the country they want to enter. The framework delivers a simple yes/no answer as to whether the individual meets the current entry criteria, but the underlying health information stays in the individual’s control. The framework is being designed such that it can be accessed directly through other apps and services.
