Namibia: Eight Essential Tips For Planning A Safari Of A Life Time

Eight Essential Tips For Planning A Safari Excursion In Namibia

Namibia is a land of surreal beauty. It’s a destination that beckons intrepid travelers from around the world. With diverse landscapes, from the red dunes of the Namib Desert to the rugged Skeleton Coast, this southwestern African country is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Among the many incredible experiences that Namibia offers, a desert safari through its otherworldly landscapes is an absolute must.

Here are a few essential tips and insights on embarking on an unforgettable desert safari in Namibia.

Choosing the Right Time

The first step to planning a desert safari in Namibia is choosing the right time to visit. The country’s desert regions can be extremely hot during the summer (December to February), with temperatures often exceeding 38°C. It’s advisable to plan your trip during the cooler and more pleasant months of April to October. This period is also the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes, making it easier to spot them.

Selecting Your Base

Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, is the most common starting point for a desert safari. From here, you can rent a 4×4 vehicle, hire a local guide, and stock up on supplies for your adventure. Depending on your itinerary, you may fly directly to other major cities or towns, such as Walvis Bay or Swakopmund, to explore different desert regions.

Dune Exploration in Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei, part of the Namib Desert, is renowned for its mesmerizing red dunes. These towering sand formations, some of the tallest in the world, create a surreal landscape you won’t find anywhere else. The best time to experience the dunes at their most vibrant is sunrise and sunset when the colors shift from orange to deep red.

A visit to the iconic Dune 45 is a must. You can either hike to the summit or opt for a thrilling sunrise balloon ride for a bird’s-eye view of the dunes. For an added layer of adventure, consider a guided 4×4 excursion to Deadvlei, a white clay pan surrounded by massive dunes. Here, ancient dead trees rise from the cracked ground, creating a hauntingly beautiful scene ideal for photography.

Exploring the Skeleton Coast

The Skeleton Coast, aptly named for its treacherous waters and shipwrecks, offers a different desert experience. This desolate and remote area is home to some of the world’s most rugged and unforgiving landscapes. To explore this region, you can choose from various guided tours that provide an up-close look at the eerie shipwrecks, seal colonies, and windswept landscapes.

Wildlife Encounters in Etosha National Park

A desert safari in Namibia would only be complete with a visit to Etosha National Park. This vast wildlife sanctuary is home to various animals, including lions, elephants, rhinos, zebras, and more. The Etosha Pan, a massive salt flat, dominates the park’s landscape and is an ideal location for game viewing, especially during the dry season when animals congregate around the waterholes.

For an immersive safari experience, consider staying in one of the park’s lodges or campsites. These accommodations allow you to spot wildlife from your doorstep, creating unforgettable memories of Namibia’s natural wonders.

Respect Local Cultures and Wildlife

Namibia is home to a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. When interacting with local communities, respect their customs, seek permission before taking photos, and be a responsible traveler. Additionally, it’s essential to respect the wildlife and natural environment. Avoid littering, stick to established paths, and never approach or feed wild animals.

Plan Your Accommodations

While camping under the stars in the desert is an exhilarating experience, there are also a range of accommodations to suit various preferences. You can find campsites, lodges, and luxury resorts across Namibia’s desert regions, offering diverse options for travelers.

Go with a Guide

While self-driving through Namibia’s deserts can be an incredible adventure, especially for experienced travelers, first-timers may benefit from hiring a local guide or joining a group tour. Knowledgeable guides can provide valuable insights into the landscape, wildlife, and culture, making your desert safari all the more enriching.

Namibia: Astonishing facts about Dead Vlei

Astonishing facts about Dead Vlei, the dark and dead natural wonder in Namibia

This natural wonder has been attracting travellers, scientists and photographers from all over the world for a long time now.

Dead Vlei is one of the most weird places to visit on earth. The place is located in Namibia's Namib-Naukluft National Park and is unique in many ways. This natural wonder has been attracting travellers, scientists and photographers from all over the world for a long time now.

Here are 10 astonishing facts about Dead Vlei that will leave you awestruck:

1) Otherworldly beauty: Dead Vlei looks otherworldly because of its ethereal landscape. It is distinguished by its white clay pan encircled by soaring red sand dunes, creating a visually striking contrast of colours.

2) The name: Vlei in Afrikaans means marsh or pan, while Dead signifies the dead or blackened trees. So, Dead Vlei translates to dead marsh.

3) Home to ancient trees: Here at Dead Vlei, you’ll get to witness ancient, dead camel thorn trees (Acacia erioloba). These have been preserved for over 900 years and are believed to have died due to the shifting sands and climate changes.

4) Petrified trees: Surprisingly, the trees in Dead Vlei have not decayed. It is because the extremely dry climate of the Namib Desert prevents decomposition. So instead of being dead, they have become petrified, which gives the entire forest an eerie appearance.

5) White clay pan: The white clay pan floor of Dead Vlei is composed of dry, cracked clay that can become extremely hot during the day making it difficult to walk on.

6) Red sand dunes: The towering red sand dunes around Dead Vlei are some of the highest in the world! Some of these have a height of over 300 m. Dune 45 is famous in the region.

7) Photographer's dream come true: Dead Vlei is every photographer’s dream destination. Sunrise and sunset are absolutely divine here!

8) Harsh climate: The climate in Dead Vlei is extremely harsh, with scorching daytime temperatures and minimal rainfall. This extreme environment contributes to the preservation of the dead trees.

9) Tourist attraction: Despite its remote location, Dead Vlei is a renowned tourist attraction in Namibia, drawing visitors from around the world who are eager to witness its beauty.

10) Conservation: Dead Vlei, along with the surrounding area, is protected within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Conservation efforts are being taken to preserve this unique ecosystem.

Namibia: The world’s highest and biggest sand dunes

Africa - Namibia

Some of the world’s highest and biggest sand dunes are the centerpiece of western Namibia’s Namib Naukluft National Park, Africa’s largest at 49,768 square kilometers.

The dunes – some of them more than 200 meters high – were created by millennia of waves and onshore winds depositing sand on the world’s oldest desert.

Easy to explore with your own vehicle, the main park road leads to the vibrant Sossusvlei dunes and photogenic Dead Vlei with its ghostly forest. Hot-air balloon flights offer a bird’s-eye-view of the awesome desertscape.

In addition to its legendary dunes, Namib Naukluft is renowned for its desert canyons, shipwrecked spangled seacoast, as well as flora and fauna that have adapted to one of the Earth’s most arid places.

Although it’s not a national park per se, Africa’s largest protected zone is the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (520,000 square kilometers) formed in 2012 to safeguard adjoining parts of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola and Namibia.

Tourism sector bounces back in Namibia

Tourism sector bounces back in Namibia

With its unique mix of wildlife, spectacular scenery and diverse cultures, Namibia is in high demand for international visitors during the looming high season.

The high demand from long-haul source markets has also seen a sharp rise in flight prices during the high season, which runs from July to October.

Ultimate Safaris: Camp Sossus - Immersive Explorations - opening April 2022

CAMP SOSSUS - IMMERSIVE EXPLORATION - OPENING APRIL 2022 FOR EVERYONE!

Yes, you’ve read that right! We have now had time to align our post-Covid operations properly, and to take into account the experience gained since the opening of ONDULI RIDGE in July 2021. As a result, we have been able to heed the calls to open the Namib’s best kept secret to everyone so Camp Sossus will no longer only be available to those travelling with Ultimate Safaris or those wanting to book it on an exclusive-use basis. It will now be open to be booked on an individual basis by anyone who wants to stay there – subject only to the availability of accommodation. All current exclusive-use bookings will be honoured, but as of April 2022 Camp Sossus can be booked on the same basis as Galton House and Onduli Ridge, on a standard per room basis.

However, the philosophy of Camp Sossus remains unchanged. The camp will still offer a truly sustainable “back to nature” experience, allowing guests to touch, feel, smell and experience the Namib, but with their feet remaining firmly in the desert sand. This ultimate connection with earth, nature and people in a very up-close and personal way gives an intimate experience that is truly immersive! Camp Sossus is NOT merely an accommodation establishment. It offers an IMMERSIVE EXPLORATION of the Namib Desert over a minimum of 2 nights and it should be offered as such!

Whilst staying away from brick and timber buildings and all the luxury paraphernalia associated with those, our aim is still to provide complete comfort while ensuring an immersive exploration of the Namib Desert, by vehicle, by bike and on foot. We also offer the option of sleeping under a blanket of a billion stars on our star beds which are built on top each guest tented room. Guests are looked after by some extraordinary people whose only desire is to ensure that each moment spent with us is as perfect as possible. The attentive service, incredible food and attention to detail experienced at our other camps such as ONDULI RIDGE and THE NEST @ SOSSUS have also become standard at Camp Sossus. Days are filled with thrilling encounters, and nights are enhanced with immersive experiences beyond most people’s wildest dreams. Our aim is to leave long-lasting impressions and happy memories but, most of all, to offer those life enriching experiences for which we have become so well known.

COMFORT, INTIMACY & REDEFINING LUXURY

Camp Sossus emphasises every aspect of our intention to redefine luxury. Our own definition of this encompasses privacy, intimacy, experiential focus and total flexibility, all whilst being perfectly comfortable.  We can provide all of this at an affordable price as we have removed the element of material opulence and the consequent need for high pricing that is generally associated with luxury accommodation. The camp offers just six tented guest rooms and is open year-round, providing a great alternative to any traditional lodge or camp in the Sossusvlei area, whilst offering unparalleled opportunities for immersive exploration of the Namib Desert environment. The large west-facing windows and south-facing doors in the tented guest rooms allow natural cooling by the predominant afternoon south westerly wind, and the tents all have a basic infrastructure that offers important comforts. These include semi open-air en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot bucket showers with locally sourced amenities, comfortable extra-length three-quarter twin beds, solar lighting, 220V electrical charging station, pedestal fan, shaded patio, shaded day-bed and a magnificent star bed. The essence of the camp therefore remains both experiential and immersive.

WORLD CLASS GUIDING

Guests at Camp Sossus are hosted and taken on immersive excursions by members of the world-renowned Ultimate Safaris Naturalist guiding team. They therefore go out to explore some of the world’s most beautiful wild places, encountering wildlife spectacles and experiencing unique aspects of the oldest desert in the world while receiving detailed interpretation of what they get to see. Throughout this whole experience, they are wrapped in the warm and caring hospitality that has become the hallmark of Ultimate Safaris. The skills and knowledge of our Naturalist guides are of the highest order, and the guides are considered to be the most important ingredient for providing these immersive explorations. We hear the same comment time and again from guests leaving at the end of their safaris : “Ultimate guides are truly out of this world!” Knowledge, experience and character should be taken for granted, but the addition of charisma, passion and motivation provides a combination of the traits that create perfect guides. They are personable, engaging and caring and they have a passion for travel and the world around them which gives them the ability to immerse guests into what is a truly unique Namib Desert experience. These guides quickly turn a standard safari experience into a life enriching one, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for this incredible area. They are the link between our guests and the intricacies of the natural world, sharing their knowledge with enthusiasm, understanding and humour.

IMMERSIVE EXPLORATION

A fundamental and unique part of any stay at Camp Sossus is the immersive exploration of the desert whilst in the care of one of our Naturalist Guides. This exploration can take one of several forms, including mountain plus BIKE excursions,  WALKS, and scenic drives by VEHICLE, all in the company of one of our Naturalist Guides. Incredible night-time star gazing and tutorials on that are complimented by the opportunity to sleep in our STAR BEDS which are built on a deck above the bathroom at each guest tent and supplied with their own linen so there is no need to struggle when taking linen from inside the tents. Namibia’s night sky is famous for its stars, so almost everyone wants to spend at least one night sleeping out under the stars in complete safety and privacy using these STAR BEDS which are unrivalled in the Namib Desert. It seems that very few guests have ever had the opportunity to experience something like this, and the consistent feedback is that this is one of those truly life enriching experiences that makes a stay at Camp Sossus so memorable!  Nights under a billion stars, while you are sure to have crisp, cosy bedding and good lighting as required also offer what many find to be a hugely romantic experience ! Of course, guests don’t have to spend the entire night on the star beds as their equally comfortable bed inside their tent awaits them if they feel the urge to be more cocooned. When guests stay for extended periods of three nights or more, they also have the opportunity to explore the Plateau on the Reserve, which offer some of the best views available out over the Namib Desert. In addition to all of this, morning hot air balloon flights as well as scenic flights over the local area in helicopters and fixed wing aircraft can be arranged - although all these come with additional charge.

RECYCLED, REUSED & COMPLETELY SUSTAINABLE

Camp Sossus is built in a natural amphitheatre formed by a south-facing granite outcrop, and is open year-round. As the harsh desert climate is a primary consideration, tents are protected from the stormy east winds by natural stone walls, and shaded by roofs built from almost 500 recycled oil drums. Tented rooms are equipped with furniture built mostly from recycled metals, oil drum lids, recycled wooden pallets and other recycled wood including the remains of an old Oregon Pine floor, all of which were originally destined for landfills. As a result, the camp is virtually invisible from any distance and it carries the lowest environmental footprint of any camp in Namibia. All power is generated via a solar farm, waste water is processed through a sophisticated reclamation process, solid waste is processed via our sophisticated solid waste management system, and great care is taken to conserve our most important resource, water, including making use of bucket showers and doing all laundry offsite where more water is available.

CONSERVATION & THE NAMIB TSARIS CONSERVACY

Camp Sossus in the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape is designed to be in line with our commitment to help preserve wild places through impact investments that have a positive effect on the environment and its custodians. Located on the private 24,000 hectare Namib Tsaris Conservancy, which is nestled between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains, this camp is a mere thirty minutes’ drive from the gateway to Sossusvlei and the Great Namib Sand Sea which has recently been declared a World Heritage Site.

The Namib Tsaris Conservancy (NTC) was founded in 2010, and it serves as a natural buffer from the harshest desert conditions and a refuge that is vital to wildlife through the dry season. Ten years of intensive work to reverse sixty years of inappropriate farming practices, including the removal of 89 km of internal fencing, the installation of wildlife watering points, the improvement of road networks, the rehabilitation of land and the reintroduction of wildlife that historically occurred here, has resulted in one of the most picturesque and ecologically sound tracts of land in the area. The NTC has gravel plains, mountainous areas with dry river valleys as well as a large raised plateau which towers above the desert below. It is now home to some of largest concentrations of wildlife in the area, including Oryx, Springbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Burchell’s Zebra, Kudu, Hartebeest, Giraffe, Steenbok, Klipspringer, Bat-eared Fox, and Aardwolf, as well as predators such as Leopard, Cheetah and Spotted Hyena.  Plans for the future which include the reintroduction of critically endangered black rhino and the acquisition of adjoining land to extend the Conservancy are ongoing!

Around 20% of all revenues earned at Camp Sossus will be directly re-invested into the conservation of the area, thus staying true to our philosophy of re-investing into the environment. This is possible because of our model that the investment into our camps should be moderate from both a financial and environmental perspective, ensuring sustainability on all levels without the pressure of having to recoup large financial outlays.

Travellers are often delighted to find the village of Solitaire in the area that borders the Namib Naukluft Park, in the midst of the gravel plains of the Namib. Solitaire exudes a sense of warmth, and it is comforting for travellers to see other people, even if they are strangers, in the Namib.

Name

"Solitaire" is the name of the group of card games for one player only. It also refers to the solitude of the area and the town in the middle of the vast Namib Desert. We can only speculate that the name refers to the only means of entertainment for settlers in this lonely village.

History

Until 1848 the area that surrounds what is now Solitaire was called Areb, and was unused. In 1848 Willem Christoff van Coller bought 30,000 ha from the South West Administration to farm Karakul sheep. Mr. van Coller first built a small 2 room cottage and later added the main farm house, a stone kraal adjacent to the farm house and constructed a dam across the Tsondab river.

Sometime in the late 1840's Van Coller built the shop, which is still in use today. The shop also acted as the regional post office. In 1851 a church was added, making it one of the older churches in Namibia. An organ was put in the church in 1879.

When motorised transport replaced ox wagons, a hand-operated petrol pump was installed in front of the shop. In 1968 the farm 'Solitaire' was sold to Mr. Maritz. Today Solitaire is well-known for one individual: Moose, the informal 'Mayor' of the town, and a master of the culinary art of preparing 'Apfelstrudel', the German version of apple pie. Sadly, Moose died in 2014.
