Susuwe Island Lodge has reopened its doors and warmly welcomed its first guests following the completion of a full refurbishment program earlier this year. Roofs were re-thatched, walls re-decorated, terraces re-decked and trucks full of new furnishings were unloaded and their contents carefully ferried across the Kwando River to their new home.
While guests enjoy all the new design features and amenities at Susuwe Island Lodge, their stay is further enhanced by many spectacular sightings of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and sable. Previous guests were treated to the presence of six magnificent lions passing within 100 metres of their boat, while enjoying a sundowner on the Kwando River’s famed Horseshoe Bend.
Guests at Lianshulu Lodge have also been generously rewarded recently by sightings of a large herd of Buffalo (more than five hundred), elephant visits and appearances by a resident pride of lions.

Ker & Downey Botswana is delighted to announce that Shinde Camp is due to receive an extensive refurbishment, due for completion on the 1st of March 2015.

Ker & Downey Botswana camps continue to provide classically styled luxury, maintaining the historical charm of those first great African safaris. Therefore, in keeping with the Ker & Downey Botswana brand, the upgrades will focus on enhancing the elegance and authenticity of this iconic Botswana safari camp.

The Shinde refurbishment will be carried out in a two-phase process:

Phase One (late October 2014): Replacement and upgrade of furniture and soft furnishings within the main camp areas, tents and throughout the exclusive ‘Shinde Enclave’.
°    Replace all soft furnishings – linens, curtains, towels, cushions etc.
°    New furniture throughout camp
Phase Two (5th January 2015 – 28th February 2015): The second phase will involve structural alterations to the guest tents and some minor improvements to the main area.
°    Central bedroom area of the tents are to be increased in size
°    Panoramic sliding doors at front of units leading
°    An extended front deck
°    Remodelled bathrooms refitted with new, stylish brass fittings and ‘wet room’ style shower.
°    Multi-tiered dining room and lounge will remain essentially unchanged, with some minor alterations to the bar area adjacent to the fire deck.

Namibia: Ebola preparedness measures

Namibia is now in an emergency preparedness with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) taking preventative measures to ensure that the Ebola virus does not cross any border post without their knowledge.
This follows reports that many people from Ebola-affected countries are fleeing to Southern Africa, placing the region in a predicament.
The Ebola virus, labelled the worst health crisis since Aids, has caused the deaths of more than 4 000 people thus far across all the infected countries in the world, with Liberia taking the hardest knock since the virus broke out.
“Our main concentration to prevent people with Ebola coming into Namibia is Hosea Kutako International Airport,” Dr Jack Vries, chairman of the National Health Emergency Management Committee and coordinator of Ebola in Namibia said.
Dr Vries further elaborated that special attention is being given to persons coming from Ebola-
affected countries, scrutinising them by making use of an infrared scanner for any Ebola-like symptoms during their stay in Namibia.
“The government ordered four more modernised scanners which are expected to be in Namibia by next week.
With these scanners the people leaving the planes will be scanned for fever,” Dr Vries explained. These scanners can scan up to 12 persons at once relieving staff of unnecessary extra work.
Protective clothing and more infrared scanners have been dispatched to all the entry points and border posts across Namibia, shifting thefocus now to all entry points into Namibia.
“Attention is being given to the Buitepos border post between Namibia and Botswana, as well as several entry points in the Kavango, in anticipation of an influx of people from Ebola-affected countries since many are moving southwards,” Dr Vries said.
During this process, they are also busy upgrading all the border posts to strengthen detection methods of the virus.

Namibia: Swakopmund's Mondesa cultural festival | Фестиваль культуры в Свакопмунде, Намибия

Mondesa Cultural Festival takes place today and tomorrow in Swakopmund, Namibia.
“The main objective this year is to celebrate and maintain Namibian culture through beauty,” says events director Irena Elias-Kapenda.

The event also aims to inspire the youth of Mondesa to uplift their community through various activities and to start fund raising for projects to assist community members who live with disabilities.

The event hosts SME exhibitions, cultural entertainment and musicians, a beauty pageant and a gala dinner where Heinrich Hafeni, Chairman of NCCI, at the Coast will be the keynote speaker.

SPYL secretary Elijah Ngurare will be the guest speaker at the gala dinner.

The event will take place on the open space between the Mondesa police station and Vrede Rede school.
