New routes for Air Namibia

National flag carrier, Air Namibia is in talks with the Angolan and Kenyan authorities to introduce direct routes between the two countries, a move aimed at increasing the parastatal’s revenue. Namibia’s small local market means the company is forced to explore other opportunities to bring in extra profit for the company.

Air Namibia has already secured new routes starting from end of March 2015: between Walvis Bay and as well as Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Air Namibia expects the deal to be to be in place by the end of the year in November.

Meanwhile, Air Namibia is yet to implement its turnaround strategy, due to the limited local market.

Namibia: new addition to Hilton family

The Hilton Hotel will expand in the form of an 180 guest room hotel expected to open in 2017. The N$270 million facility will be opened adjacent the existing Hilton Windhoek and forms part of the Freedom Plaza development. New hotel will be named Hilton Garden Inn Hotel.

The new hotel will complement the existing Hilton Windhoek and enhance the hospitality offering in the city, which is fast becoming a hub of corporate and leisure travel in Sub-Saharan Africa. The new Hilton Garden Inn Windhoek will bring hallmark brand characteristics such as complimentary WiFi and the 24 hour Pavilion Pantry. Hilton Windhoek and the site of the new Hilton Garden Inn Windhoek is approximately 42 kilometres from Hosea Kutako International Airport and five kilometres from Eros Domestic Airport. This allows for easy connection to and from the hotel, and local landmarks within close proximity include the Namibian Supreme Court, Parliament and the Independence Memorial Museum. Hilton Garden Inn Windhoek will feature two food and beverage outlets, including an all day dining restaurant, as well as a garden lounge and bar, and the hotel will feature two individual meeting rooms.

Another conservation award for Namibia

Another international award for best wildlife conservation and empowering rural communities due to its outstanding Community Based Natural Resource Management Programme (CBNRMP) has been received by Namibia recently.

Namibia boasts an expanding, free roaming population of lion, giraffe and elephant and also has the largest cheetah population in the world.

The award follows the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) recognition of 14 finalist organisations from 12 countries around the world that led innovative tourism initiatives in public policy and governance, enterprises, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), research and technology.

The Namibian constitution allows for sustainable utilisation of Namibia’s biodiversity. Country remains committed to the sustainable use of wildlife resources, as is indeed provided for in the country’s national constitution.

Other recent awards include the film which is part of the greatest recovery story presentation that won the best film award two weeks ago at the Wildlife and Scenic Festival – the largest film festival in the US.

Following an announcement at the World Health Assembly in Geneva on Friday 30th January 2015, the South African Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, removed the requirement for proof of Yellow fever vaccination for travellers between Zambia and South Africa, with effect on the 31st January 2015.

A World Health Organization (WHO) review of the risks regarding Yellow fever in northwest Zambia would support the reconsideration of the requirement for Yellow fever vaccination for travellers to and Zambia.
