Penduka Safaris - specialists in mobile safari expeditions to remote destinations in Southern Africa
Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Safari pioneers by nature, Penduka Safaris was established back in the 1960s by Izak Barnard and is one of the oldest mobile safari operators in Southern Africa. After 55 years in business the company remain true spirited pioneers and worthy leaders in mobile safari expeditions and transfrontier safaris through Southern Africa. Penduka specialises in expedition-style mobile safaris to more remote and off-the-beaten-track places in Zambia, Namibia and Botswana (including the Central Kalahari, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) and is renowned for their desert and cultural safaris (Kuomboka, Bushmen and Himba safaris).
Decades of accumulated hands-on know-how, history, intimate knowledge, passion and appeal for the bush, the people, fauna and flora have been passed on through each generation as the family has been involved in wildlife since the early 19th century.
Today Willem Barnard and his British wife Sally are running Penduka Safaris and the company is based in Maun. Willem, who is Izaks’s second son, grew up with the excitement of a long journey in the air. Since he could remember, he knew about provisions being packed in safari trunks, tarpaulins being fastened on roof racks and foreigners with unfamiliar languages arriving for safari. Part of his childhood memories were of his father returning after many days with dusty vehicles, the smell of Kalahari grass in his clothes and stories of untraveled roads, the kindness of the Bushmen people and sightings of wild animals one could hardly believe.
Therefore, from a very early age, Willem joined his father on safaris during school holidays and memorized everything he could. After school, he studied nature conservation and with his experiences since childhood days he was more than fit to guide Penduka Safaris.
Having guided safaris in Southern Africa for 30 years, Willem is not only a safari guide of note but also a charismatic host, raconteur, hands-on-owner, experienced bush pilot, photographer and avid birder.
Additionally to family safaris, tailor-made and luxury mobile safaris, Penduka Safaris offers an extensive variety of mid-range set-departure mobile safaris in Botswana and Southern Africa. All safaris are fully serviced (non-participation style) with en-suite tents and are inclusive of drinks and park fees. Over the years Penduka Safaris has catered for numerous groups, large corporate incentives, wilderness weddings, remote research expeditions and television adverts.
Penduka’s diverse range of unique and custom-built safari vehicles are not only designed to provide maximum comfort but are suitable for all seasons, can meet the challenges of any terrain and long-distance travel to more remote destinations whilst keeping guests comfortable. The vehicle design also allows Penduka to operate all year round. Additionally to its fleet of customised closed game viewing vehicles which are equipped with large windows and rooftop hatches with 360-degree views allowing for ultimate game viewing and photographic opportunities, the company also has a fleet of customised open game drive vehicles.
