Grave number 1023: Hermann Korn

Hermann Korn - the hero of The Sheltering Desert book - 2 German geologists' odyssey of survival in the Namib Desert in 1940s near present Farm Niedersachsen and Kuiseb Canyon. He lived along with Henno Martin (15 March 1910 – 7 January 1998)  for two years in the Namib Desert to avoid internment during the Second World War.

Henno Martin later became a professor of geology. He lectured as a professor at the University of Sao Paulo, and from 1962 to 1965 he served as director of the Precambrian Research Unit at the University of Cape Town.

Unfortunately Hermann Korn died in car accident in August of 1946. He was 38 years old.

Tragedy occurred on 9 August 1946 at 22:30 when car he was driving in along railway tracks fell off railway bridge into dry Gammams River riverbed. He died instantly. The cause of accident is unknown, whether it was an accident due to reckless driving or suicide.

His grave is located in Windhoek central cemetery near Hochland Park suburb.
