Namibia: new Huab Lodge | Хуаб Лодж Намибия

New Year, New Huab Lodge!

After a hiatus of nearly two years, Huab Lodge has re-opened its doors to welcome tourists!

The new owners, Deon and Lidia Brummer, come to Huab Lodge from a conservation background and are very proud to take the lodge into this next era, building on the foundation that Jan and Suzi van der Reep laid.

Huab Lodge was originally founded in 1992 to help generate funds for the conservation of the desert-adapted elephants that roam this remote stretch of Damaraland, and conservation remains central to the Huab Lodge ethos.

Huab Lodge is situated at the end of a 35 km cul de sac, so it is the ideal place to stop over for a few nights, explore the ephemeral Huab and Aba-Huab Rivers in search of the desert adapted elephants and experience 'The Huab Sound of Silence'.

The main area:

The unique main building blends well into its surroundings, with the irregular thatch roof mirroring the mountain range on the southern banks of the river. Open on all sides, you are offered striking views of the swimming pool, and along the river valley. The reception area has been moved to a newly built area next to the main lapa.

In keeping with the ambiance at Huab, meals are enjoyed at a family table.

The chalets:

The 8 chalets are all situated along the northern banks of the Huab River, offering magnificent views down the valley.

Each chalet has a large private patio and is tastefully furnished with two extra-long double beds. Large windows and sliding doors allow in both light and a view across the Huab. There is in fact no need to even close the curtains – rather watch the stars and listen to the calls of owls and barking geckos as you drift off to sleep.

The Activities:

Thermal Spring: At Huab Lodge you can enjoy the soothing benefits of the natural thermal spring which bubbles up out of the ground at about 60 degrees Celsius but is maintained in the ‘bath’ at between 37 and 40 degrees.

Ephemeral River Drive: This full day activity starts with a quick 7am coffee before departing in the direction of the ephemeral Huab River

With fences having, for the most part, been removed in the Damaraland area, the desert-adapted elephant are free to roam the entire area and the morning will be spent exploring both the Huab and Aba-Huab rivers, in search of these magnificent behemoths.

Early Morning Walk: Offered either before or after breakfast,  the best time to do these walks is before the sun reaches its zenith as, even in winter, temperatures can rise to 30 degrees during the day and most animals prefer to find shelter during that time of the day.  Longer walking routes for the fitter, or more adventurous guest, can be offered though.

Scenic and/or Sundowner Drive: A drive is offered in a game viewer vehicle, departing the lodge after breakfast to explore the nature reserve and the beauty of the morning.

Another drive is offered in the late afternoon, taking in the magnificent Namibian sunset, along, of course, with the obligatory sundowner!
