Vasco High School, Akkers, Goodwood
In 1950 a high school was started for coloured pupils on the corner of Milton and Wiener streets, De Akkers for pupils in the Northern Suburbs.
The school started with Standard 7 to 10.
Pupils as far as Eersterivier travelled to and from school by bus. Dr. George Brink travelled by bus from Bellville Civic and got off at the clinic to get to the middle gate of the school.
The first school principal was Mr. Frederick Braam. Frederick Edwards who attended in 1952, remembers his English teacher Richard Rive and Afrikaans teacher Mr. Alexander.
Calvin van Wyk recounts that the so-called "Plankieskool" mysteriously burned down. Deliberate arson to get the coloured school moved out of the newly declared White area.
