Simon's Town: Simon’s Town muzzle loading cannon firing dates

Simon’s Town muzzle loading cannon firing dates finalised

A historic 9-inch rifled muzzle loading cannon (RML) is one of the South African Naval Museum’s premier exhibits and its firing is proving a major attraction for the Simon’s Town-based museum.

Museum Officer in Charge, Commander Leon Steyn, said firings of the cannon at Middle North Battery last year generated “positive interest” and were well attended. This was basis sufficient for him to approach the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Base (NB) Simon’s Town for permission to do it again this year.

Permission was granted and the cannon will go boom five times this year, all on public holidays (with one exception). Dates and firing times are 27 April (Freedom Day) at 12h00; 16 June (Youth Day) at 12h00; 24 September (Heritage Day) at 12h00; 11 November (Armistice Day) at 11h00 and 15 December (Day of Reconciliation) at 12h00.

Middle North battery and the cannon are under the care of the South African Naval Museum. The SA Navy (SAN) supports firings provisioning a 5 kg black powder blank charge for each firing along with the necessary range safety officer and emergency services. The Cannon Association of South Africa (CAOSA) conducts firings on behalf of the museum with the contribution and work of retired SAN warrant officers Harry Croome and Martin Venter singled out for special mention.

The 9-inch cannon at Middle North Battery above Simon’s Town is a rifled muzzle loading (RML) one with a nine inch bore diameter positioned by the British in 1896 Steyn writes.

“With the commissioning of more modern cannon in defense of Simon’s Bay at the turn of the last century, the 9-inch cannon became obsolete and was abandoned to vandalism and deterioration. Until Croome – then the Warrant Officer-in-Charge of the South African Naval Museum – proceeded to save the cannon and the precinct at Middle North from further neglect. Over the course of many years and weekends he restored the old cannon to a point where it could be proof fired again – for the first time in 108 years – in time for the Navy Festival in April 2011.”

Canon firing days are special, Steyn notes, with short talks about the cannon’s history before the firing happens. The SAN band has – on occasion – added further lustre gracing firings with its special brand of military music.

The cannon’s struck off charge event happened in September 1906 and it was dormant until restoration work, under the auspices of the gun shop at Simon’s Town dockyard in 1983/84. Its first firing post-restoration in 108 years was on 16 March 2011.

At the brand reveal, Norbert Wurm, Managing Director of O&L Leisure, enthused that the new logo encapsulated the overall identification of Mokuti Etosha. “Mokuti Etosha is Africa Re-imagined. While we can find some familiar elements, we will at the same time encounter an enhancement that will lead to unique, different, and warm experiences. Everything here has a story and a reason, from the buildings to the different activities and occurrences.”

Wurm added that the new logo represented the colours of nature in and around Mokuti Etosha, while the magnificent sunsets and sunrises experienced at Mokuti Etosha as well as the endless horizons of the Etosha pan were also featured. “A logo that inspires tranquility and leaves space for imagination. Africa Re-imagined, embraces the imperfect imperfections of nature and our people.”

Etienne Fourie, General Manager at Mokuti Etosha, expressed his delight with the new experiences and adventures that the lodge will offer. “We aimed to create an unexpected, memorable and unique experience that guests can both love and admire, as captured by our O&L Purpose ’Creating a future, enhancing life’. With the help of our designers and architects, the attention to distinctive African designs of walls, roofs and floors is unique and this Africa Re-imagined detail is enriched by scents and sounds throughout the lodge. We know that guests will enjoy Mokuti - which incidentally means in the bush - on a whole new tranquil level with raw, authentic, and immersive experiences. Once the final touches have been completed, guests can look forward to the full Mokuti Etosha Africa Re-imagined.”

Mokuti Etosha’s inaugural opening is slated for May 2023 while doors are open for guests as from 5 March 2023.

South Africa: Number Plate Museum in Boksburg

The South African Number Plate Museum at the Foamy Rides car wash, Nursery and Tree Farm, in Boksburg

It all started when a customer gave Boksburg carwash owner Peter Greathead a few old number plates.

He decided to display them on a wall at his business. Amused customers saved their old plates and added to his collection – his only provison was that none were bought or stolen.

When Greathead moved to new premises which included a small nursery, he took the collection along and used the extra space to open the Number Plate Museum.

By that stage he had accumulated hundreds of plates from all over the world. But it’s still a work in progress. He is gunning for a Guinness World Record of the largest number plate collection, which stands at 11 345.

South Africa: Nedile Lodge turning 20 Years Old

Nedile Lodge

We are super excited to celebrate Nedile Lodge turning 20 Years Old!

Time flies when you are having fun. On this day, January 29 in 2003, we welcomed our first set of visitors, and Nedile Lodge is still going strong today.

The owner first built Nedile Lodge as a private getaway to spend quality time with family and friends, he then decided to open it up commercially to share their love of nature with everyone.

We are incredibly excited to share this celebration with all of our previous guests, as well as with those who are still to experience the tranquility and beauty that Nedile Lodge has to offer.

In a quick glance over the past 20 years, the lodge has many achievements, from winning the AA Travel Guides: Best Game Lodge to World Luxury Hotel Awards: Continent Winner 2022/2021 / Country Winner 2020 and many more. Our wonderful team and all of our guests helped to achieve these accolades.

Through the years we have received fabulous reviews and feedback. The owner has a saying: “Good criticism is welcome, as it is necessary to ensure that we at Nedile Lodge keep striving to be better and ready to provide our guests with the best.”

The reserve has blossomed over the years, with a couple of successful projects to mention. Black Rhino's being introduced into the Reserve with the Rhino Rescue Program and contributing to the cheetah meta-population program. The Reserve has also installed motion-activated cameras throughout, which have captured some amusing shots, even catching the owner waving to the camera.

With all of your help, we have made it through some of the most difficult years, known as Covid, and we are still going strong. Over the years, some team members have moved on to new life journeys while others have stayed with us, such as Mapula Magagane, who has been whipping up a storm in the kitchen for 20 years. Keep an eye out on our social pages as we will be doing ‘Meet The Team’ posts and there you can see who is still with us as well as the newer team members of Nedile Lodge.

Our mission is to provide you with a "home away from home" experience, including great food, entertaining and unforgettable game drives, and exceptional comfort and attention to detail.

An African Anthology: closure of Air Ventures operations in the Okavango Delta

An African Anthology

It’s with a heavy heart that we have been asked to announce the closure of our Air Ventures operations in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. After many years of great partnership, Air Ventures Okavango Delta has decided to cease hot air balloon operation in the Okavango Delta with immediate effect.

Due to the significant impact of Covid on the business and only operating for short seasons in Botswana, the compounding effect of two years of unprofitable business has unfortunately left the company in an unviable position.

On behalf of An African Anthology, we want to thank Adam and his amazing Air Ventures team for all the wonderful memories created for our guests over the years and all the best going forward.

Please contact our reservations team on info@traveltonamibia.com to assist with any bookings already in the system for Kadizora Camp.

South Africa: Bo-Kaap and Table Mountain in Cape Town aerial view

Magnificent shot of Bo Kaap and Table Mountain in all their resplendent glory, Cape Town, South Africa | Район Бо Каап и Столовая Гора, Кейптаун, Южная Африка

The Bo-Kaap ("above the Cape" in Afrikaans) is an area of Cape Town, South Africa formerly known as the Malay Quarter. It is a former racially segregated area, situated on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre and is a historical centre of Cape Malay culture in Cape Town. The Nurul Islam Mosque, established in 1844, is located in the area.

Bo-Kaap is known for its brightly coloured homes and cobblestoned streets. The area is traditionally a multicultural neighbourhood, and 56.9% of its population identify as Muslim. According to the South African Heritage Resources Agency, the area contains the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa, and is the oldest surviving residential neighborhood in Cape Town.

Botswana: Sun Destinations: Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge

Sun Destinations

Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge

We officially welcome Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge to the Sun Destinations portfolio. The lodge complements the rest of our accommodation options along the Trails of Botswana route, offering plenty of scope to explore the Chobe Region.

Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge overlooks a thriving waterhole in the remote Kasane Forest Reserve, a relatively unexplored concession bordering the Zambezi National Park in the northern stretches of Botswana. The closest safari tourist town is Kasane, which has an airport open to both domestic and international flights.

Boasting 20 bedrooms over two storeys that all face the waterhole, this secluded hideaway ensures every need is met in terms of accommodation. Fans, mosquito nets, safes, private balconies with seating, and butler’s trays in each room provide a much needed sense of comfort.

In addition to the standard bedroom options, there are also 2 luxury Meru style tents on raised platforms that cater for guests requiring something a little bit more luxurious.

For those needing a respite from the African heat, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a swimming pool on-site, complete with a deck area with chairs and umbrellas. When you’re not soaking up the tranquility of the bushveld at the pool’s edge, you can spend time in the boma area where a crackling fire breaks the silence of the bushveld.

The closest safari tourist town is Kasane, which has an airport that is open to both domestic and international flights.

The lodge’s claim to fame is its prolific elephant herds, many of which can be spotted congregating around the lodge’s waterhole - it’s not uncommon to spend evenings dining with elephants. In addition to Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge’s enviable location, it is also fast becoming a sought-after safari destination for large groups seeking a lodge of superior quality with African inspired design.

Boasting 20 bedrooms that all face the waterhole (two levels), this secluded hideaway ensures every need is met in terms of accommodation. Fans, mosquito nets, safes, private balconies with seating, and butler’s trays in each room provide a much needed sense of comfort. In addition to the standard bedroom options, there are also 2 luxury Meru style tents on raised platforms that cater for guests requiring something a little bit more luxurious.

The main area of the lodge is joined to the rooms by a quaint wooden walkway that meanders its way from the rooms to an expansive reception area housing a curio shop, and a further viewing deck overlooking the waterhole. There is also a massage spa being built, which will offer another dimension to the already sublime safari experience.

The two dining areas each have a small bar area, and like the rest of the lodge, overlooks the bustling waterhole. Safari goers can expect to dine in splendour, while being introduced a fusion of flavours during meal times. Dining at Chobe Mopani is a protracted affair, and great care is taken with the dishes served. Hospitality here is top notch.

For those needing a respite from the African heat, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a swimming pool on-site, complete with a deck area with chairs and umbrellas. When you’re not soaking up the tranquility of the bushveld at the pool’s edge, spend time in the boma area where a crackling fire breaks the silence of the bushveld.

Included in your safari experience are two activities per day, which can include sundowner drives to the Kazuma Pan; a full day into the Chobe National Park for game drives and a boat cruise; cultural village tours; and day trips to Victoria Falls. These safaris open up a world of opportunity to view the high concentration of African wild dog, leopard, buffalo, elephant, lion, impalas, zebras, antelope, and plains game. Because the lodge is located between two parks - Chobe National Park and the Zambezi National Park - the game viewing is exceptional.

South Africa: Road alert M41, Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal

Road alert M41, Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal

A trucker's believed to have lost control of the vehicle on the M41 eastbound.

The truck rammed into more than 30 vehicles stationary near the M4 on ramp, causing absolute chaos on the M41.

The wreckage of vehicles can be seen stretching across some 400 metres along the busy route.

Some have overturned, or smashed into the barrier while others were mangled almost beyond recognition.

Witnesses said that that the truck ploughed into traffic that had come to a standstill.

The vehicle then rolled into a conservation site at Umhlanga Ridge before falling onto its side.

Fifteen people, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital.

One man who was involved in the pile-up said he is thankful to be alive.

"All cars were standing still because of the traffic jam and all of a sudden, I heard a big bang then all the cars that were behind me were pushing each other.

Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu said it's going to take a while to clear the road.

"At this stage, it is very difficult to say when we are going to open it because it is going to take time. We are advising motorists to use other routes until further notice."

Medics have confirmed that over 50 cars were involved in the crash.

Fortunately, no deaths have been reported.
