Zambia: Simalaha Horse Safaris from Chundukwa Lodge | Сималаха Сафари Замбия

#SimalahaHorseSafaris #Zambia #ChundukwaRiverLodge

Simalaha Horse Safaris, Zambia

Horse Safaris

Doug and Gail have opened a new chapter.

We are now operating Multi-day Horse-riding Safaris in the Simalaha Community Conservancy - close to Botswana, Namibia and The Victoria Falls!

SIMALAHA  (said Sim-a-la-ha!) means 'COME TOGETHER'.

Chief Nyambo Yeta of the Lozi people residing along the Zambezi River, along with Peace Parks, invited Doug and Gail to be the first operator to set up Horse Safaris within the Simalaha Community Conservancy.

The Senior Chief's vision is to promote Sustainable Tourism in the Simalaha in order to provide revenue and employment to his people as well as conserve the wildlife and natural resources in the area - an area that forms part of the Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), which is the largest transfrontier park in the world.

16 species of plains game have already been re-wilded into the area since 2012 and are grazing peacefully with the herdsmen's cattle. This makes for fantastic horse-back safaris - combining wildlife and cultural participation for guests.

SIMALAHA IS A HORSE RIDER'S DREAM

With vast open flood plains, mopane and acacia woodlands this makes for fantastic riding country.

Simalaha is only 2 hours drive from Chundukwa Lodge and Livingstone, the home of the magnificent Victoria Falls. This is a perfect opportunity for horse riders from around the world to fulfil not only their riding dreams but combine that with a bucket list adventure to see Victoria Falls.

NOW ON OFFER

There are various Fully Inclusive package opportunities that combine a Horse Safari with a stay at Chundukwa River Lodge offering direct access to Victoria Falls and all the amazing activities in the Livingstone area.

The Season Opens - when the flood waters of the Zambezi reside, from 1 July - 31 January.

The Camp - sleeps up to 8 people in 4 tents elevated above the plains on platforms with luxury beds and linen, ensuite bathrooms with fantastic hot showers and solar lighting. The whole camp is off grid.

Riding Safaris are booked on a minimum of 4 pax and maximum of 8. (For 2021 we will accept a minimum of 2 pax.).

An elevated shaded lounge ensures 360 degree views, and the plunge pool overlooks the water hole, for some game viewing in the heat of the day.

TRANSFERS

Simalaha can be accessed by boat, road or helicopter.

Boat transfers can be arranged from Mambova, Kasane (Botswana) or Katima Mulilo (Namibia) and are approximately 2-3 hours depending on the pick up location. Road transfers are available from Livingstone, Kasane, or Katima Mulilo, and are approximately 2 hours.

Helicopter flight from Livingstone takes 45 minutes.

Fixed wing charters - an airstrip is currently being built - please chat to us and we will keep you updated.

Simalaha Horse Safaris Zambia - Background and Horses

Horses

Our horses  are well schooled bush horses and include a variety Boerperds, Quarter Horses and Basuto Horses. We use saddles to suit all riders; Western, English, Australian stock and Trail saddles. Our horses range from 14.3 to 16 hands and have a weight limit of 100kg (unless prior arrangements have been made).

Doug Evans

Doug's background as a Horseman goes back 40 years having ridden and trained horses for National Parks anti-poaching units. After leaving the wildlife department and opening Chundukwa River Lodge in 1992, he started horse trails at Chundukwa which still exist today as a large active stable yard servicing not only our horses but the local community who livery and ride their horses from here. Doug went on to school horses for Polo and Polo Crosse in Zambia and was a founder member of the Zambian Polo Crosse Association, having coached the national team to compete at World Cup level. Doug is a bushman and his love for horses is the driving force behind Simalaha Horse Safaris.

Namibia - Sandfontein Lodge & Nature Reserve | Сэндфонтейн Намибия

THE DREAM STARTS HERE

Far from the crowd, in a wild and isolated corner of southern Namibia, you will find a uniquely private hideaway. The Sandfontein Lodge & Nature Reserve is a magical destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Home to arid plains, dry riverbeds and the mighty Orange River, Sandfontein has just five eco-conscious bungalows.  It’s a soul-stirring place where guests have all they need to relax and reconnect with nature.

Our Philosophy:

• Silence, stars, seclusion.

• Find yourself. In the middle of nowhere.

• The ultimate luxury is real space, solitude and tranquility – not easily found.

• One of Africa’s largest private nature reserves at 200,000 acres (81,000 hectares), 25 km of Orange River frontage and a maximum of 10 guests (1 guest per 81 square km!).

• Reconnect with nature, relish the silence, sleep under the stars.

• No timetables.  You decide the what, where and when.

• Relive the battlefields of Sandfontein (1914) and Norechab (1906).

• Rock-amour. Boulder fields. A geological paradise.

• Canoe. Hike. Fish. Bird-watch. Track on foot. World-class star gazing. Scenic drives.

The Lodge

a. 4 chalets + 1 suite = 5 rooms in total sleeping two each – maximum of 10 guests

b. 20 metre lap pool

c. Children are welcome

d. To preserve its magical silence, the lodge operates entirely on solar energy (therefore NO air-conditioning!)

e. The kitchen is supplied with delicious fresh produce from the lodge’s dedicated organic vegetable garden

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

It’s easy to fall in love with the peaceful bungalows at Sandfontein, and with the cool inviting 20 metre lap-pool.

But as soon as the morning sun throws light over the rippling Namibian mountains, birds begin to sing, butterflies flutter into life, and the reserve’s big game animals gradually start to awaken, giving visitors a very good reason to get out and explore one of Africa’s largest privately owned nature reserves.

WHAT TO DO…?

No timetables, no constraints. You decide what, where and when.

1. Scenic and sundowner drives. Animals outnumber visitors at Sandfontein by more than 400 to one. But the reserve is bigger than the island of Singapore and the animals are free to roam across the wild terrain. Discover the beauty of Sandfontein on a scenic drive and sighting one of the animals on the huge reserve is a bonus!

2. Hiking and nature trails.

3. Canoeing, fishing and/or bird-watching on the Orange River.

4. Photography: earthly ecstasy for photographers – the dramatic landscape, fauna and flora, and ever-changing light devours both film and memory.

5. World-class star-gazing: Because Sandfontein is remotely located in the second least densely populated country on Earth, the night sky and star-gazing is, quite literally, a staggering experience for those unaccustomed to it.  In fact, it is so remarkable that scientific teams have made use of the lodge to observe and measure the specific events unfolding in the universe.

6. Rock-amour: For lovers of geology, Sandfontein is a playground waiting to be discovered.  The scale of the landscape dwarfs you as you wander amongst giant boulder fields. Diverse formations and rock types, including deposits of beryl, amethyst and tantalite, make Sandfontein something of a geological oddity.

7. Air safaris and flights over the Fish River Canyon (by prior arrangement, charges apply).

THE ANIMALS

Sandfontein has the privilege of being home to more than 3,000 animals including but not limited to aardvark, baboon, eland, giraffe, jackal, klipspringer, kudu, leopard, oryx (gemsbok), ostrich, red hartebeest, springbok and zebra.

While vehicle-based safaris can be undertaken day or night, Sandfontein is very large and therefore the animal density is relatively low.

THE BATTLE OF SANDFONTEIN

As the site of the legendary 1914 Battle of Sandfontein, the reserve is rich in historical significance. The combined British and South African forces, more than 2,500 in number, with some 4,300 support animals, were desperate for water.

They were ambushed and ultimately defeated by the German colonial troops, comprised of four machine-gun units, ten artillery units, and 1,700 riflemen. At the end of the battle, 50 enemy were dead, 100 injured and some 200 prisoners taken. The clash is the only battle during World War One where the South African forces suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the lesser German troops.

Today the landscape is a living museum sprinkled with mini ramparts, shells and food tins - clues as to how the troops tried to survive in this dramatic landscape. Two German war graves lie on Sandfontein – one within walking distance of the lodge – and are still maintained by the German government.

THE BATTLE OF NORECHAB

Another living museum, also part of Sandfontein Nature Reserve, is the Battle of Norechab that took place on 14 February 1906 and was planned by the Nama (then known as the Hottentots) against the Schutztruppen.

200 Nama approached the German camp under the cover of night and they started their attack at first light.  The Schutztruppen were ready for battle within six minutes, having been joined by a neighbouring division of 30 men who had heard the gunshots.  The attack failed and the Nama were defeated.  The Germans suffered five deaths and a further seven were wounded.  As the Nama were unable to give their dead a proper burial, and because there is no written record of their account, we can only find out more information on their losses through further research.

THE AIRFIELD

& “DESERT CLASS” LOUNGE

• Sandfontein’s excellently maintained airfield is approximately 5 kilometers west of the lodge.

• GPS coordinates: S28°43’11? E18°30’38?. Length: 1,400 meters. Elevation: 2,150 feet. Runway Headings: 09/27.

• Gradient is 3% - slopes UP from east to west and therefore we recommend landing on runway 27.

• A good windsock is maintained at the threshold of runway 09. Four brick run-up pads are also provided for parking and engine-checks.

ORABO RIVER VILLAGE

OraBo, a portmanteau of “Orange” and “Bohemian” is a tiny village originally established decades ago as an Italian mission station. Located a few hundred metres from the Orange River, OraBo offers self-catering accommodation set within the Sandfontein Nature Reserve. The fishing is world-class.

There are two comfortable self-catering guest houses that can accommodate up to six guests per house. Camping is also available at designated spots for tents and motorhomes.

The GPS coordinates are: S.28 85202 E.18 57648.

Namibia: Message from Pension Uhland in Windhoek | Пенсион Ухланд

The situation with Covid-19 is difficult for all of us in Windhoek and country as a whole. People want to travel to Namibia and some are travelling.

We want to let you know, that we are available for your guests. No matter if they want a "normal" stay or if they need to stay longer to quarantine. Even if they have tested positive and need to isolate until they test negative again.

We are experienced in looking after people in quarantine and isolation as the Ministry of Health has made use of our facilities for many months.

This is a testimony from guests recently staying with us:

"We had a very nice stay at this Hotel, even if it was “unvoluntary”: a quarantine stay at the end of our travel through Namibia in April/May 2021 due to a positive Covid-19 test. […] We had a separate area of the hotel with garden for the one week stay, we could individually arrange for the food we were served and so we had a very relaxed week until the next covid test."

Hotel Uhland - We care for you!

Irmgard and Jürgen Rannersmann and your Hotel Uhland team

South Africa: Drakensberg 4x4 destination | Дракенсберг Южная Африка

The Drakensberg is an interesting 4x4 destination

With so many challenging 4x4 options the Drakensberg has got to be one of the top offroad destinations in South Africa?

Are you a 4x4 enthusiast? well if that's the case this region is about to blow you away. Something that came up in conversation the other day was how you can get involved and help create even more 4x4 trails. How cool would it be to head out on a rudimentary trail with your 4x4 and trail blaze a new route. Turns out this option is also available for bike clubs and 4x4 clubs.

Ideas for your off road experience

Use your own vehicle

Sani Pass 4x4 Trail . Take a Tour Up Sani Pass and Experience Lesotho - You can take your own 4x4 up the pass or join one of the Sani Pass tour operators. This is a fairly challenging 4x4 route with access from Himeville in the southern Drakensberg. The pass twists and climbs upwards, beneath towering cliffs and buttresses, reaching the top of the Drakensberg escarpment at 2873 m. You need a passport to cross the border post into Lesotho.

Mikes Pass - This 4x4 trail is located in the Cathedral Peak Section of the Central Drakensberg. This 32km trail is one of the most scenically beautiful anywhere. It includes some steep climbs and a hair-raising 7km downhill on the pass.

Thule Beacon Trail - From St Bernards Peak in East Griqualand. This trail is renowned as a tough 4x4 trail that takes you high into the southern Drakensberg mountains. The experts say that this trail is much tougher than Sani Pass.

Berg to Bush Trail (3 nights). The exciting Berg to Bush trail takes you from Mafefe Camp in the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains across different nature reserves and terrains. Enjoy an incredible experience taking in the views of the Drakensberg Range, the wildlife of Letaba Ranch, and a rugged 4x4 journey complete with bush camping.

Retief’s Pass, Drakensberg. In 1837 Piet Retief’s party of voortrekkers braved the Drakensberg in their quest for freedom and a land (Natal) of their own. The original trail carved by their ox wagons is known as Retief’s pass. The pass was declared a national monument in February 1977.

Get involved

Giants Castle - Antbear Lodge invites you to extend the 4x4 trails on this rugged property. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for 4x4 and off road clubs to get together and  help to establish the trails on the farm

Monks Cowl – Ardmore Guest Farm is an organic timber farm with rudimentary 4x4 trails. Let Paul guide you to some of the most fun 4x4ing around.

Quad bikes and motorbike trails

Drakensberg Quad Tracks and Adventures operate from Cathedral Peak Hotel in the central Drakensberg. The quad bike track meanders through the foothills of the Drakensberg up to Lake William for a half way stop. The elevation of this spot allows breathtaking views. The Quad Ride is enjoyable for the less and more experienced offering a safe and enjoyable experience for the whole family.

All Out Adventures - The quad experience includes a lesson on riding safely together off road in a group, followed by an outride on purpose built mountain trails. The whole experience lasts 1-1.5 hours depending on the group.

Accommodation in the Drakensberg

Antbear Eco Lodge & Farm

Overnight  in a secluded luxury cave with a Jacuzzi spa bath and open fireplace. Glass doors open on to a deck with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the Drakensberg Mountains. With hammock chairs on the deck this is the perfect a location for a sun downer. You can opt for a private dining experience on the deck of your cave under the stars.

Antbear Lodge is  a perfect base to explore the very best of the Drakensberg region. We use our own organic vegetable garden. We have our own chickens for eggs, cows for milk, make own cheese. Butter and yogurt and bake our own bread.

Pet friendly too. Come and share some of Andrew’s and Conny’s dream of a sustainable lifestyle.

Ardmore Guest Farm

Ardmore Guest Farm is situated in the scenic Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg. You will enjoy stunning views of the three highest peaks in South Africa. Mafadi (highest peak at 3450m) Injisuti Dome (second highest at 3410m) and the majestic Champagne Castle (third highest at 3377m) which are all situated in South Africa’s latest World Heritage Site. This is a malaria free area.

You will be receiving a warm welcome which makes all the difference and that's what Ardmore Guest Farm excels at. This is great for children too who will love the ducks, goats, sheep and the fact that you can bring your pet along.

Great food and friendly staff. If you want a tranquil spot in a great location, then Ardmore Guest Farm is for you! Your stay will be memorable and thoroughly enjoyed.

Sable, zebra, giraffe and wildebeest make up some of the plains game in the area, with a small leopard population who thrive in the rocky habitat. The birdlife lays claim to the highest concentration of breeding pairs of black eagles worldwide, an accolade worthy of mention for these endangered species.

AirVentures Balloon Safaris: Balloon Safaris in the Chobe Region | Полеты на шарах Ботсвана

Balloon Safaris in the Chobe Region are Operational

We are excited to announce that our balloon safaris in the Chobe Region, over the Seloko Plains are operational. The Seloko Plains is a vast concession situated 45 minutes south of the town, Kasane. It is an important wildlife corridor, extending from Zimbabwe to join up with, the Chobe National Park, and the Kasane Forest Reserve, forming part of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. The diverse habitat incorporates large tracts of forest which open up into wide open grassland plains, making it perfect for balloon safaris.

Operations are seasonal due to the soil type in the concession becoming impassable during the wet season, and are set to conclude on the 30th September 2021.

Guests have a variety of accommodation options available in the Kasane area, or can opt to overnight in one of the Camps closer to our flying area. A one night’s stay over prior to the balloon safari is necessary for optimal enjoyment. Our transfer vehicles collect guests in the Kasane area and will transfer them to our launch site.

A flight of approximately an hour explores the reaches of the wilderness of the Seloko Plains and is concluded with the traditional bubbly celebration overlooking the vast savanna plains. Breakfast at a five star camp rounds off the experience before guests are transferred back to Kasane.

Operation based at Elephant Valley Lodge

Latest News from Kangara Adventure Safaris | Кангара Сафарис Ботсвана

Latest News from Kangara Safaris

Spectacular Savute.

Over Easter we decided to go and scope out Savute. For 3 nights we were spoiled with having this diverse area to ourselves. It did not disappoint. Marsh Pride at Marabou Pan, a very shy elusive leopard with its impala kill in the brow of a Raintree, morning coffee under a gallery of baobabs and sundowners watching the evening glow radiate of Bushman Hill. The drive from Maun was 6 hours in duration but well worth it and if you are prepared and well briefed as to expectations then you cannot be disappointed.

At Kangara we are very strong on managing guests expectations.

Savute is incorporated into one of our 5 night packages which combines Northern Moremi and Savute, with a transfer straight out to Kasane. Please e-mail for a detailed itinerary.

Travel to Botswana

Regulations remain the same as our previous newsletters. Safari Industry and self - drive market is slowly picking up. We hope to be operating our first safari in July, our last being March 2019 just before Botswana went into lockdown.

Kangara is ready! Our vehicles are serviced, our insurance is in place and staff are undergoing new Standard Operating Procedures with Covid measures in place!

Other News!

Moremi Game Reserve is now open after being closed due to flooding. We took a day trip out there to check it for ourselves to the Xini and Blackpools area. A lot of water and deep crossings but still manageable. Hippo and Crocodile of course and big cats were seen outside the park close to Kaziikini.

OKMCT, the community that we work with to run mokoro safaris into NG32 have announced quite a significant hike in daily rates for 2022, to include daily mokoro hire rates on top of your guide rates and entrance fees.

And Last of All.....

Our 2022 rates are out, with 3 levels of safari comfort.

Raintree Camp

Progress is slow as we still await funding. Regardless we hope to have a campsite up and running this year. We are halfway through building a main ablution block. Progress will be in stages until we reach our final product of private campsites with private ablutions and self-catering chalets. Contact us for more info and rates.
