Chikunto Safaris, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia joins Inspirational Places Portfolio
Small-scale sustainable luxury lodge in iconic South Luangwa National Park opens doors
Inspirational Places is proud to announce Chikunto Safaris, Zambia as their newest member. Celebrating its inaugural season in the iconic South Luangwa National Park, Chikunto Safaris is located approximately forty-five minutes’ drive inside the Mfuwe gate. Set along the banks of the mighty Luangwa River at Big Bend, the owner-run lodge offers guests an authentic encounter of the area, underpinned by responsible tourism practices. Accommodating twelve guests and comprising just five luxury tents, one of which is a two-bedroomed family tent, there is more to this property than meets the eye.
German-born Jens Kant (now CEO, Chikuntu Safaris) and his Swiss-born wife Regula Burkhalter were on safari in the area four years ago. It was then that they met their safari guide, Josephat Musoni (now Director - Safaris Activities, Chikunto). The event turned out to be a catalyst event, resulting in a shared destiny. This meeting of European and African minds successfully turned a quixotic idea into a tangible reality; and is a cornerstone of hope to many.
Upon opening in April 2018, Jens and Regula attributed the success of the camp largely to the unwavering commitment of their Zambian partners on the ground. From the very beginning stages of the lodge’s inception Jens and Regula invested in their task team of local villagers, upskilling them in various vocations. This deep commitment to their key stakeholders, the community, is the foundation of this property. Tragically, just weeks after the celebrated opening of the lodge, Regula was struck down by a sudden, fatal illness. The community continues to mourn for their “Swiss mother”. They are, however, comforted by the opportunity to ensure her legacy lives on.
Josephat’s respect for Regula’s dream is as deep as his commitment to conserving Zambia’s wild spaces. His engaging, erudite manner endears Josephat to his guests and team alike. The way in which he imparts his encyclopedic knowledge of bush lore, garnered over twenty-five years of safari guiding, ensures his guests enjoy a safari experience of singular quality. The lodge offers a plethora of activities designed to showcase the natural wonders of the area. Guests can take exploratory boat trips along the Luangwa River (February through April), game drives or nature walks (mid-April through mid-November). The cuisine is a real highlight at Chikunto Safaris. Each meal is a delicious, home spun creation.
Alison Hunt, owner of Inspiration Places says, “Chikunto Safaris is for the community and this really resonates with me. In my opinion, such an incredible example of sustainable tourism is greatly deserving of our support.”
Jens, Josephat and the Chikunto Safaris family are ready to welcome their first guests in loving memory of Regula.
