Namibia: Elephant at the west coast

Elephant in Swakopmund, Namibia

An elephant bull was seen walking in the vicinity of Swakopmund on the road to Henties Bay in December 2019.

According to officials from Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) a male elephant has wandered from the Ugab River into the coastal town.
The environment ministry was also monitoring the situation to decide what to do.

It is possible that the drought was driven the animal to wander so far out of its way, but this could not be confirmed as spectators speculated that it was scared into the wrong direction, or had instead just embarked on a lonely journey – coincidently near a built-up area.
A few hours later elephant bull was successfully directed back into the desert.

It was hoped the bull made its way back to the Kunene Region from where it was believed to have wandered.
