Rivers flooding and overflowing of dams in the southern parts of Namibia is said to be the biggest since the 1990s, as the country's third largest surface reservoir, the Naute Dam, was filled to 117,8% capacity.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform said the dam was 117,8% full with an inflow of 2 300 cubic metres. The country's rainfall over the past two weeks have not only boosted the levels of the country's three largest dams, but have also significantly surpassed dam levels recorded this time last year.
Flooding in southern Namibia over the last few days has caused extensive damage to roads.
Namibia Roads Authority (RA) reported at least 8 roads were closed in the southern Karas Region, in particular around the regional capital Keetmanshoop, as a result of overflowing rivers including the Stampriet, Fish, Hom and Vaalgras. RA said it is currently working on repairs and appealed to all road users to exercise extra caution and be vigilant on their journeys, especially in areas where we have received good rains.
Windhoek residents have been warned of possible flooding as heavy rain persists in the capital. The City of Windhoek issued the warning as the city continues to experience heavy rain, flash flooding and overflowing rivers.
A number of areas in Khomasdal, Katutura, Olympia, Klein Windhoek, Hochland Park, Avis and the city centre have been marked as hotspots due to the rivers that run through them.
The city has cautioned residents living in low-lying areas to take extra precautions during rainstorms as flash floods may affect them.
Windhoek has received rain every day since the beginning of the year. The Namibia Meteorological Service has predicted rain of more than 60 millimetres in various parts of the city. Ongoing rains are experienced across the country, with southern towns suffering major damage to road infrastructure. The northern regions are also encountering heavy rains.
Namibia's rainy season usually lasts from November to April.
