In 1896, the "Erycina", a sailing Norwegian bark vessel belonging to the Damaraland Guano Company sank while it was offloading coal and supplies and loading guano destined for the U.K. when strong winds blew her ashore. Additional pumps were supplied at Cape Cross, but after two days it was found that she could not be kept afloat. It was finally decided to beach her. "Erycina"'s crew was taken back to Europe by the Woermann Liner, Lothar Bohlen. Over the years many wooden parts of this ship were washed ashore in the bay north of Cape Cross. There are no recognisable traces of "Erycina" today.

"Eduard Bohlen": 2,272 ton/95 m long, single screw, speed 10.5 knots, German passenger / cargo ship (Woermann Line). Passenger accommodation: 1st Class: 32, 2nd Class: 14. Completed in January 1891 by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg (Yard No.75) for Die Africanische Dampschiffs AG (managed by Woermann Line), Hamburg and used on the Hamburg - West Africa route. 1895 sold to Cie. Maritime Belge du Congo, Antwerpen. "Eduard Bohlen" was repurchased by Woermann Line, Hamburg in 1898.

It was en-route from Swakopmund to Table Bay and ran aground at Conception Bay on 5 September 1909 in thick fog when it was due to offload equipment for the diamond workers near Conception Bay on her voyage from Swakopmund to Table Bay. After offloading of some cargo and equipment aboard the Eduard Bohlen marine vessel Otavi attempted to tow the Eduard Bohlen from the sandbank. Unfortunately the attempt failed, 30 passengers disembarked and were transported to Swakopmund.

Within next ten days, according to reports, so much sand settled around the Eduard Bohlen that it was possible to walk from the beach to the stranded ship at low tide. It is 800 m inland now and partially buried under the desert sand.

Namibia: Swakopmund Platz am Meer shopping center & fishing video

Platz am Meer Swakopmund shopping center is a landmark on the coastline of Namibia offering quality restaurants, luxury seafront apartments, banks and a selected variety of food and fashion retailers.

This new development is designed in harmony with the environment and offers luxury apartments and penthouses all linked to fashionable shopping with beachfront views, green walkways and child-friendly play areas.

Elegance and comfort, taken to new heights by the beauty of the Namibian coastline, is what makes Platz am Meer development the place to be.

YouTube video:

Sustainability features

Shopping Centres normally have large roofed areas making them ideal for photovoltaic electricity generation.

We are retro-fitting all our Centres with solar power systems. In Swakopmund, with its high electricity

price from the grid, this was an even more sensible option. All apartments and restaurants have access to or are supplied with natural gas, which is a cleaner fossil fuel than the diesel used to generate electricity in Walvis Bay.

The Shopping Centre’s walkways are naturally ventilated with the airflow controlled by the opening and closing of clerestory windows according to the need of the day. Natural light is as important in managing the electrical demand, so great care was given in flooding the mall with natural light from all sides.

Only high quality materials and suitable techniques for this unique environment were used in its construction. With the Sulphur rich mist in Swakopmund causing aggressive and corrosive conditions,

innovative installations were crucial. Imported self-adhesive roof tiles, with no metal were used. Such

finishes will enhance the lifespan of the building and simultaneously reduce the need for costly maintenance works and frequent improvements.

Some interesting facts about Platz am Meer:

• First two escalators for Swakopmund/Erongo area of Namibia

• First Dis-Chem and Checkers outlets in Erongo area

• ± 920 000 man hours of construction work

• Rock placed for breakwater: 135 000 tons

• Concrete placed: 15 866m³ (2 644 truckloads of 6m³ each – 13km queue of trucks)

• Bricks used: 2 764 951 (923 truckloads, a 5,5km queue of trucks)

• Form work: 100 579m² (16 rugby fields)

• Brick force: 70km used

• Reinforcing bar (Rebar) used: 1 129 tons

• Bags of cement: 135 565 bags/6 780 tons (226 truckloads of 30 tons each, a 2,48km queue of trucks)

• Plaster: 43 139m² (7 rugby fields)

Platz am Meer is a Namibian landmark that the local community can be proud of, granting opportunities, employment and business initiatives that should be claimed and cultivated for the better of the people.

We are confident that the Waterfront will become a popular destination, not only attracting the community of Swakopmund to its diverse amenities and activities, but also be a destination of choice for those from other towns along the coast.

Platz Am Meer accommodates 72 shops.

African Bush Camps: World Safari Day is coming up!

#worldsafariday #AfricanBushCamp #Botswana

World Safari Day is coming up!

We all want to make sure that African safari tourism is here in 20 years. Sometimes it takes small acts and reminders to create big change. On the 25th of November help us celebrate Africa's people, wildlife and the importance of tourism.

Experiences, people, conservation & culture, are the interconnected elements of what makes a safari authentic. World Safari Day is a reminder of the importance of preserving and rejuvenating these aspects.

The aim of World Safari Day is to revive the essential safari tourism industry, which has such a positive impact on Africa’s people and wildlife. People are powerful, especially when we get behind a good cause together.

As the world starts to re-open what a powerful way to remind people of the positive impact their holiday can make!

Namibia: Treesleeper Camp needs boost | Трислипер Кемп Намибия

Treesleeper Camp needs boost

The community of Tsintsabis in the Guinas constituency is lobbying for financial assistance to revive and boost operations of the Treesleeper campsite.

This campsite, an income-generating project for the Hei//omn San community, is in a deteriorating state due to the unavailability of funds to maintain and upgrade it, and to run day-to-day operations.

“Having contemplated many ideas on how we can make the project work and grow over the past years, we have now decided to seek help from private investors or businesses who we can enter into a joint-venture agreement,” said camp manager Moses //Khumub.

Hei//omn means ‘treesleepers’, derived from the time members of the community were forced to spend nights in trees to evade lions.

The campsite started its operations in 2007 and offers, among others, bushwalks, traditional performances and village tours in addition to fully-fledged camping facilities.

However, it was brought to its knees a few years back when a contractor vanished, leaving the project partially incomplete. An amount of N$3 million was spent at the time.

The campsite has the potential to unlock the economic potential of the marginalised people of Tsintsabis, which lies 65 kilometres northeast of Tsumeb. The area is in close proximity to the Etosha National Park. The road passing through leads to the Kavango West and further to Angola, through Mpungu and Katwitwi border post.

The project was initiated by the tourism ministry for the benefit of the community.

“We have presented this idea (fund sourcing) to the ministry and they will assist in facilitating. We are asking investors to submit their expression of interest on how they can come on board and assist,” said //Khumub. There are eight campsites and 10 bungalows.

“Basically, the little we generate just goes to the upkeep of the campsites as well as payment for the two colleagues assisting. So, we haven’t really gone that far in terms of infrastructure maintenance, as it is a costly exercise, hence we are looking for bailouts elsewhere,” he stressed.

South Africa: Cape Town's Victoria Junction Hotel shuts its doors | Закрытие отеля Виктория Джанкшн Кейптаун

Cape Town's Victoria Junction hotel shuts its doors

The Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Victoria Junction must close its doors as the property has been handed back to its owners.

The hotel is the latest casualty of Covid-19's impact on the tourism sector.

There is, however, hope for the hotel to reopen in due course.

The iconic Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Victoria Junction is the latest casualty of Covid-19's impact on the tourism sector.

The hotel, which is in the popular De Waterkant area – close to tourist hotspots like the V&A Waterfront and central city – will no longer be managed by Marriott International, nor will it be part of the Protea Hotels by Marriott brand portfolio.

It has been handed back to the property's owners, namely HPF Properties, which is owned by Tsogo Sun, said Volker Heiden, area vice-president of Marriott International, sub-Saharan Africa.

Marcel von Aulock, Tsogo Sun Hotels CEO, confirmed on Wednesday that Tsogo Sun Hotels owns Victoria Junction. He says it was previously leased to Marriott, which has given it up.

"It is expected that Tsogo Sun Hotels will take it in-house and re-open Victoria Junction in due course," said Von Aulock. The timeline is unclear.

Heiden, speaking for Marriott International, described the pandemic's impact as "unprecedented".

"The impact of Covid-19 on the hospitality industry has been unprecedented. Travel restrictions and social distancing efforts around the world have resulted in weaker demand and economic uncertainty. Due to the financial impact of the situation and having explored the relevant avenues available to us, we must shut the doors at Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Victoria Junction," said Heiden.

"These are indeed challenging times and our thoughts are with the associates impacted by this decision. We value their hard work and dedication over the years and thank them for their service."

Independent analyst Anthony Clark of Small Talk Daily said the hotel had tourist appeal due to its convenient location. But, he added, despite the lifting of travel restrictions, "many hotels simply could not cope due to a lack of tourists".

The Protea does have other hotels in its portfolio situated close by, including the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge at the V&A Waterfront and the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town North Wharf in the CBD. It also runs the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Sea Point.

Tsogo Sun has the Southern Sun Cullinan, the Southern Sun Waterfront, the StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl, the Sun1 Foreshore and the SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl in the city centre.
