Gondwana news: Road conditions in the Fish River Canyon area

February 2022

Rain brings blessings, so we say in Namibia.

While we celebrate the awakening of nature after abundant rainfall in some parts of the country, we would also like to draw your attention to the current road conditions, especially in Namibia’s south.

Road conditions in the Fish River Canyon area

Due to the rainy season, some travellers have experienced challenging road conditions on their way to the Fish River Canyon. We would like to inform you of the road conditions in the area and share some valuable tips with you.

Kindly advise your guests to use the official C12 gravel road that leads past the Naute Dam and is marked as such with signs along the road. Please refer to the map showing the correct route of the C12.

You are welcome to share this map with your clients, who would like to travel to our Canyon Collection properties, namely Canyon Lodge (CL), Canyon Village (CV) and Canyon Roadhouse (CRH), or to the Fish River Canyon.

The C12 as well as the C37 going past the Canyon Roadhouse are in some places affected by seasonally flowing rivers and might be eroded. Please advise your clients to drive cautiously during our rainy season (January to April).

The gravel road between Seeheim and Naute, which used to be the C12 is no longer passable. The Road Authority declassified this road a few years ago and stopped maintaining it. Unfortunately, some old GPS maps and Google Maps still refer to the Seeheim–Naute road as the C12, which confuses travelers.
