With the year already well under way, 2022 has proven to be quite a dynamic year for tourism and in particular for Lufthansa Group, demonstrating that there is once again room for opportunity and growth in the region.
On 30th March 2022, our leisure airline Eurowings Discover made history: we welcomed another new destination for Lufthansa Group on the African continent: Victoria Falls. The launch of our brand new flight service between Frankfurt and Victoria Falls (via Windhoek) was welcomed with elation by several Zimbabwean dignitaries and guests alike, who attended the event at Victoria Falls International Airport.
By adding Victoria Falls to our route network, we are further expanding our reach into Southern Africa and thus able to offer our customers greater choice and variety. Today, I am particularly excited to inform you that Lufthansa Group has obtained fifth freedom rights, which enables our customers to purchase tickets on the regional tag flight between Windhoek — Victoria Falls — Windhoek, and thus promoting regional tourism between Namibia and Zimbabwe. These flights are now bookable via the GDS and round trip fares from Windhoek start from NAD 4,560 inclusive of taxes, whilst round trip fares from Victoria Falls start from as little as USD 310 inclusive of taxes.
Thanks to positive booking trends and relevant demand, we are also increasing our capacity into the Namibian market by offering an additional three flights between Frankfurt and Windhoek, bringing our total number of frequencies to Windhoek to ten weekly flights. These additional frequencies will be effective from July until September 2022 and can already be booked via the GDS.
