With e-tolling coming into effect on 03 December 2013, car rental companies have advised on policy changes. Please find below a general guideline of how e-tolling will impact car rental.
All vehicles have been equipped with the necessary e-tags in order to comply with Gauteng’s e-tolling legislation. If an e-tag is not fitted on the rental vehicle, the details will be processed according to the licence plate number.
The e-tags in most fleets are solely for use within the GORT (Gauteng Open Road Tolling) network. Tags will not work on any other boomed toll gantries and the client will be required to make payment immediately.
The gazetted standard tariffs will be charged for each gantry a client drives through. Clients will however benefit from the ZAR 450 monthly cap offered by SANRAL should their e-toll driving reach this limit.
Where applicable, refundable rental deposits may be adjusted with an increase of between ZAR 450 and ZAR 500 to cover the maximum charge for e-toll use.
Depending on the car rental company used, the invoice will reflect the detailed billing of e-toll charges incurred with the applicable date and time reflected for ease of reference; this will also be available on request.
Any applicable toll charges received after the finalisation of the rental agreement will be invoiced as a ‘late charge’ and the applicable method of the payment of the rental agreement will be billed for this purpose.
If there are delays within the SANRAL network, charges incurred during the rental period will be billed once received. Note that there may be multiple late charges.
If an e-tag is lost or stolen, a recovery charge will apply.
By accepting car rental terms and conditions the renter also accepts the Gauteng Open Road Tolling Terms & Conditions issued by SANRAL.
We have been informed that most car rental companies will not levy an additional administrative fee to the client at this stage, but reserve the right to introduce this charge once the cost model for e-tolling has been properly evaluated. All guidelines mentioned above are subject to change.
