Bush fires near Swakopmund

The bush fire in the riverbed outside Swakopmund burnt out of control for several hours yesterday.

The fire and bulging smoke from the east caused alarm among Swakopmund residents at around midday on Friday. The focal point of the fire was near the bridge off the C34 route where the railway tracks cross the Swakop River, less than 5 kilometres outside town and within view of Nonidas.

Firefighters at the scene were unable to salvage the situation and stood with their hands in their hair, as strong winds fanned the flames in both directions along the dry riverbed.

The fire is not likely to reach Nampower's high overhead power lines at present. It appears though as if there is no alternative for the fire brigade at the scene but to wait it out and let the fire exhaust itself, as it burns its way through the remaining dry shrubbery.

There are no houses in the immediate vicinity and the nearest settlements at Nonidas are at least a kilometre away from the blaze.

There were traces that people had made fire near the bridge recently, but no foul play has yet been noted with respect to the veldfire on Friday.

The fire had not yet been subdued at the time of publication and it is not yet clear what the precise cause was.
