Death of tourism scammer

Alleged murderer and tourism scammer Hendrik Wright (known under the alias Johan Botha), who shot and killed a police detective in Pretoria earlier this year, and then turned the gun on himself, reportedly died in the intensive care unit of the Steve Biko hospital in Pretoria late last week.
Wright, who was known in Namibia’s tourism circles as a tourist-train operator, shot and killed South African Police Services Officer, Detective Warrant-Officer Ben Strydom, on 24 July this year. Strydom arrived at Wright’s Montana Park Pretoria home to arrest him, his wife Renette and a third suspect known as Salome Klopper for their part in an alleged tourism scam. Botha, his wife and Klopper allegedly sold train tourism packages to Namibia, only to cancel the trips at short notice without refunding the tourists.
Wright fled when he saw the police and was followed on foot by Strydom. A scuffle ensued and Wright shot and killed Strydom.
He then fled the scene with his vehicle and after a high-speed chase with the police, pulled over and shot himself. He was admitted to Steve Biko hospital in a critical condition and remained so until his death last week.
Wright’s wife and Salome Klopper were in the meantime charged with fraud.
