Namibia: Route Development Project Close-off

The Namibia Tourism Board, with support from MCA Namibia and Open Africa, officially launched the three routes in June 2014. The event was hosted at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in Windhoek and the routes were officially launched by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Honourable Pohamba Shifta.

The routes are aimed at unlocking tourism opportunities and strengthening linkages with communal conservancies, enhancing the benefits of tourism to rural communities and adding value to Namibia's marketing edge as a tourism destination.

Around 10,000 brochures have been printed for each route and will be distributed through the Namibia Tourism Board channels and copies have been made available along each route for further distribution within the areas. In addition, Open Africa developed electronic brochures, or e-brochures, that are available to download on the Namibia Tourism Board website.

The three routes have been uploaded onto the Namibia Tourism Board website under a dedicated route page.

The project has seen the establishment of 5 tourism associations that will manage the routes on the ground and continue to support the initiatives that have been started. Omulunga Palm Route has developed their own video promoting the region, which is available for viewing on Youtube. They also hosted a mini-launch at the Ongwediva Trade Fair. Four Rivers Route is busy planning bike ride for May 2015, that could become an annual event and the Arid Eden Route is having shirts and t-shirts printed to sell along their route.
