Botswana: Okavango Delta flow changes direction

#OkavangoDeltaFlow
#OkavangoDeltaBotswana

How does the flow of the Delta change direction?

A snapshot on the mini earthquakes under the sand by one of our guides, Matsaudi:

We all know that the Okavango Delta is unique. But, did you know that the Delta experiences a mini earthquake nearly every day?  What appears to be a calm and peaceful place is actually experiencing deep-seated tremors underfoot but they are cushioned by the thick sand and mud that lies below the Delta’s surface. It is these shifts that make the ground under the Delta constantly move and it is this process that determines the routes the life-giving water flows as the floods rise and spread out across the reed and papyrus flatlands. New river courses are created and old deep water channels dry up, a constantly changing pattern easily seen as you fly above this beautiful landscape.

An update on water levels in the Okavango Delta

What you need to know:
°    The rains have been poor throughout Southern Africa this year due to El Nino weather patterns BUT there are still incredible experiences to be had in the Delta with phenomenal game sightings from all our lodges, particularly the big cats.
°    There has been some welcomed localised rain but currently not enough to alter the water levels in the Delta.
°    The floods from Angola are on their way which means that the drought will not be as bad as first thought. The waters have reached some other parts of the Okavango (Shakawe side) but should reach our Delta camps by April.

Shongololo Express purchased by Rovos Rail

The Shongololo Express was purchased by the luxurious Rovos Rail train at the beginning of January 2016.

The Shongololo Express train has been repainted in green and cream and an additional dining car and an observation car have been added. The accommodation of six Emerald Suites (± 10sqm) and 30 Gold Cabins (± 7sqm) will remain as is.

The three itineraries, namely Southern Cross (12 days Pretoria to Victoria Falls), Dune Express (12 days Pretoria to Swakopmund), and Good-Hope (15 days Pretoria to Cape Town), have been rebuilt to include more stationary time at night and less time spent on the road on excursions. Golf has been introduced to the Good-Hope trip – renamed Good-Hope Golf – with courses such as the Arabella Golf Estate, Ernie Els Oubaai, Fancourt, Champagne Sports Resort, Durban Country Club, Zimbali, Royal Swazi, and Leopard Creek being available to guests.

All journeys are available in reverse and, as before, guests can purchase optional extras that include visits to cultural, historical or heritage sites and overnight stays at safari lodges. The rates do not include most lunches, beverages and laundry.

Opening of Little Machaba Camp in Botswana's Okavango

20 April 2016 marks the opening of Little Machaba Camp, located on the same island as Machaba Camp in the Khwai area in the north-eastern Okavango (Botswana).

With only four tents (two family tents and two luxury tents), this exclusive, classical tented camp hosts a maximum of eight guests and is therefore perfect for a small group. The spacious tents – similar in size to those at Machaba Main Camp – are situated on raised decks, as are the main area and bar.

Water Level Update

What does the drought mean for the Ker & Downey Botswana camps?

Shinde, Kanana and Okuti will be opening on the 1st March. All three camps will be able to offer their water based activities. The current conditions in Botswana are having a positive impact on wildlife sightings, increasing both diversity and frequency.

At Kanana the mokoro activity is unaffected by the water level however we have had to adapt the boat cruise slightly due to blockages in the channel. But do not fear guests are still able to get out and experience this water element of the Delta. Your guests can expect to be out on the boat for an hour or so, in which time their guide will explain this ecosystem. It’s a great time to see birds and aquatic species. Although a great distance is not covered its very interesting and informative.

Footsteps Camp, home to our Young Explorers (specialised family safari) and Footsteps Across the Delta (walking safari) will receive its first guests on the 1st March. The mokoro activity is currently suspended until water levels rise and the hippos inhabiting the channel move to deeper lagoons. We have to remember that we are visitors in their home and be gracious guests.

Namibia: Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo | Следы динозавров в Намибии

#DinosaurFootprintsMountEtjo
#MountEtjoLodge
#DinosaursNamibia

Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo

Saurichnium Damarense at Mount Etjo - German archeologists Dr. Huene in 1925 and Dr. Gürich in 1926 were the first to discover and describe the footprints found in the Etjo sandstone. Gürich distinguished 4 types: Saurichnium damarense, Saurichnium parallelum, Saurichnium anserinum and Saurichnium tetractis. At the Mount Etjo slope, up to three different footprints can be found. The most prominent and easily distinguishable footprint is that of Saurichnium damarense, the smaller footprints are thought to perhaps be those of juvenile Saurichnium damarense. Unfortunately not enough evidence is available to further classify these footprints. These are believed to be remnants of the Triassic (Stormberg) age and around 230 Million years old.

Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo, Namibia

The necessary condition for dinosaur footprints to survive for 100 million years is that the impression has to be made in soft clay (along a lake, coastline or riverbed), and then baked dry by the sun. Assuming the footprints are "well-done" enough, they can then persist even after being buried under successive layers of sediment. What this means is that dinosaur footprints aren’t necessarily found only on the surface, they can be recovered from deep beneath the ground, just like ordinary fossils.

Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo, Namibia

At the Mount Etjo footprints you will notice that these layers of sediment have weathered off over the years along the mountain range, revealing the dinosaur footprints that lay hidden and protected beneath. Take note of the different layers of red clay – they carry the same red color of the soil typically found in Namibia today.

The Dinosaur Walk

The footprints are about 3 km away from the Camp Dinosaur camping sites at Mount Etjo Safari Lodge. Follow the signs while admiring the magnificent scenery from the top of the hill.

Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo, Namibia

The trail is about 1.5 km (about 30 minute walk), there guided and unaccompanied walk, latter is free of charge.

Baffalo Footprints

In the Okonjati Pass fossilized Baffalo Footprints can be found.

Dinosaur Footprints at Mount Etjo, Namibia

Seemingly much alike the dinosaur footprints, footprints at the foothills of the Okonjati mountains, much resembling buffalo tracks of today, can be found. The tracks are embedded in in a type of limestone, which is thought to be several Million years old, a time during which no mammals existed. Many scientists have visited the site and suggested various theories to explain the source of the prints. Nonetheless, there must have been a reason why the old native Hereros gave Okonjati it's name, meaning: "Place of the Buffalo".

Ironically the majestic buffalo is the only animal which can not be found at Okonjati Game Reserve today - Buffalo carry foot and mouth disease which may be easily spread to cattle in the area.

Phoenix Bike Rally 26-28 August 2016 in Swakopmund

During the weekend of 26 – 28 August, the Ventulus MCC Namibia will host the annual Phoenix Bike Rally at the Go Kart Track in Swakopmund. The event, of which most of the highlights will take place on Saturday the 27nd of August, will let the heart of riders beat faster with all the traditional motorcycle spectacle that comes with a bike rally, but also promises to be a day out for the entire family with all there is to see and to do.

Last year we had dragraces, burnouts and games for bikers. But even for the people without a bike there was loads of entertainment in the form of a Stuntplane, Parachutejumps, 2-stroke go kart demonstrations, firespinners, Bodypainters, dancers and so much more.

“Off course a bike rally is a real biker’s gathering, but both the club and the Go Kart Track are aiming to make the event an entertaining experience for everyone” says Ventulus MCC President Hugo Smit. “There is a lot to do on and around the race track. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old. It does not even matter if you like motorcycles. The atmosphere on a Bike Rally is relaxed and friendly, kids can play and so can the adults on their bikes or on the go karts, actually.”

For bikers there is a weekend-entry-fee of N$150.00 which includes a badge. Day visitors pay N$50.00 to enter the venue. For more details on the rally e-mail is below.
