Cool-climate Wines - Elim, South Africa
Ghost Corner by David Nieuwoudt
A beguiling range of wines inspired by the extreme weather patterns and shaped by the cooling winds that blow in from the ocean at the southern Cape coast (aka the Cape of Storms). The dramatic coastline at Cape Agulhas, where many a ship has been wrecked over the centuries, is known as ‘Spookdraai’ (Ghost Corner). Local folklore claims that the ghosts of the sailors who perished can still be seen wandering the wild waters on dark, stormy nights...
In the nearby maritime ward of Elim the vineyards grow in deep, lime-rich soils with plentiful deposits of slate and gravel, giving rise to the exceptional Ghost Corner wines. The beautifully crafted range comprises a powerful, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc; an enticing Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc with a creamy mouthfeel; a deliciously aromatic Semillon; a complex blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, The Bowline; and an elegant, silky Pinot Noir with earthy undertones.
These intriguing cool-climate wines linger on the palate as they speak eloquently of their origin at this southernmost tip of the Cape winelands.
Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc
R220.00
Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc
A unique Sauvignon blanc that cannot be compared to any other. Powerful concentrated layers of green figs and gooseberries, with a touch of grapefruit, fynbos and a steely minerality on the palate. A reflection of the cool maritime climate of Elim where the grapes are sourced. Lees contact during the winemaking process creates length and richness on the aftertaste, which will progress even more over the next 2 or 3 years. This wine can stand its own against any great seafood or poultry dishes.
Ghost Corner Wild Ferment

Ghost Corner Wild Ferment
Naturally fermented sauvignon blanc. Enticing aromas of fleshy white pear and quince with an illusion of sweetness. Ten months barrel maturation gives a creamy, full-palate with beautiful length. Well paired with fresh seafood or a creamy pasta. Best enjoyed right away, but potential to age up to five years.
Ghost Corner Semillon
R200.00
Ghost Corner Semillon
An aromatic Semillon displaying aromas of green fig, white fruit and nettles characteristic of the cool climate in Elim. A distinct minerality with a slight earthiness on the nose that follows through onto the palate. A small amount of French oak adds a hint of smokiness leading to a creamy palate with a crisp acidity. This wine is especially well suited for strong seafood flavours such as yellowtail, scallops or snoek, as well as lightly smoked meat and rich pork dishes.
Ghost Corner Bowline

Ghost Corner Bowline
Sailors call the bowline the ‘king of knots’- a strong simple knot that symbolises union, completion and eternal devotion. This white blend ‘ties the knot’ between Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Ripe asparagus notes from the Sauvignon blanc complement the green fig and dusty elements from the Semillon. A complex wine with well-balanced oak with a refreshing, smooth finish. Enjoyed with roast chicken or fresh seafood.
Ghost Corner Pinot Noir
R230.00
Ghost Corner Pinot Noir
A beautifully crafted Pinot noir with prominent red fruit of ripe cherries and sweet raspberries with an undertone of earthy, mushroom nuances. A silky palate with berries and delicate oak components following through. To be enjoyed on its own, but well paired with a mushroom soup or crispy duck and chicken dishes. A wine to be aged for another 3 – 5 years.
