The new big movie ever made in Namibia titled, Katutura, premieres by the end of November.
The movie will also be available on DVDs, Online as well as screening in Cinemas early next year. According to its Director and the winner of the Best Film Director at this year's local Theatre and Film Awards, Florian Schott, they are only two weeks away from finishing and editing the movie. Schott adds that Katutura is the biggest film ever and promises a surprise to many Namibians once released. "We are only planning to premiere the movie first before we take it into the world next year whereby it will be available on DVDs and screening in Cinemas," he says.
He adds that the shoot took place between May and June this year, whereby they only had 27 days to capture all scenes around Katutura. "We had loads of work but I had an amazing time working with the casts and crew on this film. The shoot was great. We had auditions in May last year, so most of the casts had almost a year to prepare for the filming. I met with every single one of the 40 cast members multiple times to chat about the roles. We had a table read where everybody got to know each other last year and a lots of the cast members became friends in real life too. We then had a period of rehearsals in February and March this year before we started shooting in May," says Schott. He adds that, all the cast members knew what to expect but they still got to explore the characters much deeper when they were filming.
The title and storyline of Katutura comes from original writer and producer Obed Emvula. The movie portrays Katutura as such an exciting place, full of stories, both negative and positive, there is poverty and crime but at the same time Katutura is full of creativity, energy as well as very strong families and communities. The movie follows a handful of characters and their struggles such as Dangi who just got out of jail and has to deal with the death of his brother as well as an extramarital son and a drug-addicted old flame who his wife doesn't know about. Other characters, such as Shivago, a gangster who tries to explore a new market for his drugs, and Kondja, a wheelchair-bound teenager who falls in love for the first time and their paths have to cross in both hopeful and brutal ways.
Schott says currently they have put up a teaser on social networks as a foretaste of the real Katutura movie. The teaser is currently enjoying massive views and sharing on YouTube and Facebook.
