THE BEST SELF-DRIVE DESTINATION IN NAMIBIA
Namibia is one of the best self-drive destinations in the world! We don’t say this lightly and we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy these roads on a relatively regular basis, delighting in the dramatic and swiftly changing landscapes.
Namibia, when compared to other southern and east African countries, offers a unique experience, from vast and ancient desert landscapes, to rocky mountain ranges and then into the ‘panhandle’.
Steeped in history, this area forms part of one of the world’s largest conservation areas, KAZA (Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area) which encompasses the Okavango and Upper Zambezi areas of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Tucked inside Bwabwata National Park, on the banks of the Kwando River is African Monarch Lodges’ Nambwa Tented Lodge and Kazile Island Lodge.
Ideally combined with Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Livingstone in Zambia , Chobe in Botswana or a journey around Namibia, this area offers both water and land based experiences.
Self-driving to either of these lodges is easy and being located in the National Park, you will have the freedom to choose to join the lodges' game drives or adventure out on your own.
Our guides and management will happily give you tips on where to head, what has been happening recently in the area and where you can stop for an afternoon sundowner.
One of these great stops is Long Lagoon where you can sit in the hide and watch hippos in the water and look out for elusive Sitatunga – a rarely seen antelope or giraffes coming down to the water to drink, before heading on to an area called ‘Little Serengeti’, so-called for its resemblance to the grass fields of the Regional Park in Tanzania.
Here you could see giant herds of buffalo, Africa’s largest antelope, the eland, zebra and even the beautiful sable before heading for one of Bwabwata National Park’s key attractions - a u-shape stretch of river, Horsehoe Bend.
Known for herds of 300+ elephants quenching their thirst at sunset during high season, it’s the perfect place to join the elephants and other animals for your own sundowner before heading back to the comfort of the lodges for the night, in anticipation of your next self-drive adventure the following day.
Nambwa Tented Lodge and Kazile Island Lodge is proudly part of African Monarch Lodges.
