Amid a growing public outcry about self-proclaimed prophets, some of whom are allegedly ripping off or abusing their followers, the Onankali-based prophetess Justina Haihambo is at it again, claiming to have received a “divine oracle” to warn the Namibian nation about a coming natural catastrophe.
She is predicting that a comet will hit Namibia in two years’ time, causing mysterious diseases and a major catastrophe. Haihambo has been predicting a comet impact for many years but the fact that it never came to pass does not seem to worry her numerous followers. The calamity was initially predicted to happen in the late 1990s and the early 2000s but nothing happened. In an undated one-page epistle currently being distributed in the northern regions, Haihambo has shifted the date of the falling comet to “after two years”.
She says the resultant catastrophe will cause many deaths and general anarchy.
Haihambo started her vocation as prophetess in the early 1970s. Although many people no longer take her predictions seriously, she still enjoys a significant following and has convinced many of her followers to settle at her Onankali compound in the anticipation of the predicted catastrophe. “She is the messenger of God for our times,” said one loyal follower who claimed that the prophetess had even predicted the dry spell currently affecting many parts of the Oshikoto Region. Her followers travel from all corners of the country for a night-long prayer retreat that is held at ‘The House of God’ - as Haihambo’s compound is known - on the last day of every month. A retired Lutheran pastor, Reverend Petrus Uugulu, provides pastoral care to the pilgrims.
This function was previously performed by the late Reverend Titus Ngula, who for many years was the de facto spokesman and spiritual director for Haihambo. Throughout the years some disillusioned followers have left and spoken out against Haihambo but they were soon labelled apostates and shunned by their former friends.
