Behati Prinsloo and SRT Namibia

Behati Prinsloo, Namibian super model, has joined forces with SRT to raise awareness for rhino conservation. She launched a global campaign and since has created a huge following and awareness of SRT's work to protect the critically endangered black rhino species and preserve the population.

When Behati was approached by SRT Trustee, Ginger Mauney, she jumped at the chance to get involved, and soon found herself on a plane to Namibia with a film crew to follow SRT’s trackers as they kept an eye on the country’s dwindling black rhino population.

“We were so overwhelmed with the passion of these guys on the ground that I really wanted to be their mouthpiece. I really felt a special responsibility, because I do have a platform and this is something I’m very passionate about. It’s my responsibility to at least try and make a change. Namibia is my home. It’s the secret jewel of Mother Africa. It’s also one of the most amazing places in the world, and the rhinos contribute to this sense of wonder. I grew up there and it is where my parents still live so this cause is very close to my heart. The opportunity to come home to see what is happening, to meet people caring for orphaned black and white rhinos, and to work with the trackers, rangers and communities to raise awareness is very important to me. Someday, I want to take my children to experience these animals in the wild. They’ve inspired us for generations; it’s on us to help them now.”

Namibia: 2020 message from SRT CEO | Save The Rhino Trust Namibia

Protecting Namibia's rhino for 37 years

Celebrating 2 years of no poaching.

Message from our CEO, Simson Uri-Khob

Greetings to all rhino supporters in Namibia and abroad.

The month of September was a highlight in rhino conservation when we celebrate International Rhino Day. Locally the festivities took place in Khorixas; the heart of rhino world.  I am especially excited about the commitment and efforts to understand the problem shown by Traditional Authorities. In a workshop hosted by B2Gold and attended by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, 42 traditional leaders from Erongo and Kunene Regions again pledged their support of conservation efforts.

We are pleased to have been nominated to join the 3rd cohort for the African Conservation Leadership Network Programme. Maliasili high-impact local organizations that put people at the center of conservation. They help them become stronger by working to identify their challenges and find the right solutions. We look forward to use our exposure to best practices to further our organizational success.

At the end of August SRT also celebrated 2 years of zero poaching in the Kunene and North West of Namibia where we are mandated to monitor and protect the critically endangered black rhino. This achievement is undoubtedly due to the fact that SRT work very closely with Government facilitating black rhino conservation initiatives, unifying the local communities, NGOs, donors and other national and international partners to ensure the long- term survival of the species, the habitat and the people.

Victoria Falls: Harare tourist fell to his death into the falls | Несчастный случай на Водопаде Виктория

Harare

A rescue team using inflatable boats, kayaks and ropes has finally retrieved the body of a 40-year-old Harare man who plunged to his death at Victoria Falls on New Year’s day.

Photographs showing Roy Dikinya’s final moments have been widely shared on social media:

Dikinya is seen walking in flip flops along the edge of the gorge, at a place known as Danger Point, moments before slipped and died.

The tourist is reported to have slipped and fallen more than 100 metres down into the gorge on New Year’s Day. Efforts to locate the body were hampered by rain and heavy water flow in the Zambezi River.

Zimbabwe state media informed that a joint team comprising police, parks rangers and volunteers took more than 6 hours to retrieve Dikinya’s remains on Tuesday afternoon of 05 January 2021.

A South African tourist slipped and died at Victoria Falls on 2005 New Year’s Eve, the last known similar accident in the area.

The five-telescope H.E.S.S. array Location: Khomas Region, Namibia Coordinates: 23°16′17″S 16°30′00″ Altitude: 1,800 m

High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is located in Namibia. It is a system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) for the investigation of cosmic gamma rays in the photon energy range of 0.03 to 100 TeV. The acronym was chosen in honour of Victor Hess, who was the first to observe cosmic rays. The name also emphasizes two main features of the installation, namely the simultaneous observation of air showers with several telescopes, under different viewing angles, and the combination of telescopes to a large system to increase the effective detection area for gamma rays. H.E.S.S. permits the exploration of gamma-ray sources with intensities at a level of a few thousandth parts of the flux of the Crab Nebula.

H.E.S.S. has five telescopes, four with a mirror just under 12 m in diameter, arranged 120 m apart from each other in a square, and one larger telescope with a 28 m mirror, constructed in the centre of the array. This current system, called H.E.S.S. II, saw its first light at 0:43 a.m. on 26 July 2012. As with other gamma-ray telescopes, H.E.S.S. observes high energy processes in the universe. Gamma-ray producing sources include supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei and pulsar wind nebulae. It also actively tests unproven theories in physics such as looking for the predicted gamma-ray annihilation signal from WIMP dark matter particles and testing Lorentz invariance predictions of loop quantum gravity. H.E.S.S. is a system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes that investigates cosmic gamma rays in the energy range from 10s of GeV to 10s of TeV. The name H.E.S.S. stands for High Energy Stereoscopic System, and is also intended to pay homage to Victor Hess , who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936 for his discovery of cosmic radiation. H.E.S.S. is located in Namibia, near the Gamsberg Mountain, an area well known for its excellent optical quality. The first of the four telescopes of Phase I of the H.E.S.S. project went into operation in summer 2002; all four were operational in December 2003, and were officially inaugurated on September 28, 2004. A much larger fifth telescope - H.E.S.S. II - is operational since July 2012, extending the energy coverage towards lower energies and further improving sensitivity. September 2012 marked the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the first H.E.S.S. telescope. Celebrated on Sept. 28, 2012 was also the inauguration of the H.E.S.S. II telescope. Following a workshop on Heja Lodge near Windhoek, the H.E.S.S. II telescope was inaugurated on Sept. 28, 2012; keynote speaker was the Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Abraham Iyambo. Many hundred visitors came to the Open Day on Sept. 30, 2012 to see the giant new H.E.S.S. II telescope. In 2015-2016, the camera of the four H.E.S.S. I telescopes were fully refurbished using state of the art electronics and in particular the NECTAr readout chip designed for the next big experiment in the field, the Cherenkov telescope array (CTA). The new camera were inaugurated on 27.09.16.
