Namibia: O&L Leisure - Mokuti Revamp Update

Mokuti Revamp Update

Ernest Hemingway wrote “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy.” Today is an exceptionally happy day for us as I have the pleasure to announce and share our official opening date for Mokuti Etosha Lodge with you.

In our last correspondence 4 months ago, we estimated that the revamp would take between twelve (12) to fifteen (15) months. Our project team is working tirelessly to remain on track with the envisioned refurbishment and today we can confidently and with great pride announce that our “Grand Dame” will be ready to welcome our valued guests as of 03 March 2023.

As we know, change is inevitable and in business change is vital. For Mokuti to remain a flagship safari destination, the upgrade is inclusive of the reception area, bars, dining room, kitchen, conference centre, pool bar-area and viewing deck, not to mention new activities that will be on offer. All of these will be brand new and ready to host our valued guests when we re-open, under the theme of “Africa Reimagined”! With this we will take each of our guests on a journey of rediscovering our African-Namibian heritage in a unique and contemporary way that is purposeful in capturing the imagination through the story that each element tells.

To ensure that you, our valued trade partners have a first-hand experience of our property, we will be booking site visits. You can also follow our journey of transformation and keep abreast of the changes that are about to come. Our reservation and sales teams are on standby and ready to assist you with any bookings or enquiries.

Namibia: OL Leisure: Mokuti Renovation Project 2022/23

Mokuti Lodge Renovation Project 2022/23

28.02.2022

We are heading into exciting times not only for our brands, but also the tourism industry, as travel begins to pick up slowly, both in Namibia and internationally. Having recently unveiled our revamped Midgard, we are excited for another one of our establishments to be transformed into a contemporary destination, whilst we preserve its 32-year character and heritage.

Today I share with you the exciting news that Mokuti Etosha Lodge will be undergoing a full upgrade. As a result of the construction to take place, the lodge will be closed as of 22 March 2022 for a period of twelve (12) to fifteen (15) months for the envisioned refurbishments to be completed.

The renovations will include a completely new main building (reception, bars, dining room, kitchen, conference center, including the pool bar and pool area, as well as the main entrance) will be demolished and rebuilt. The current Boma will also be demolished and relocated to a new bush location in a form of a new Sky-Boma. Current rooms will be upgraded, and additional rooms as well as new guest experiences and exciting activities will be added (e.g. conservation center, cultural village, new viewpoints, upgrades to the airstrip etc.)

Our grand dame, Mokuti, is ready for a facelift and keeping in line with our Purpose, “Creating a future, enhancing life”, we want to ensure that it will still be at the forefront of the hospitality industry in Namibia going forward. It is with faith in our future and the future of tourism, despite the unprecedented challenges we have faced, that O&L is investing in Mokuti once again and setting new standards for our country.

While this project was planned for a long time, key project requirements, including planning, financing and resourcing, were unfortunately delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These have now been put in place and in the current climate of uncertainty, we have taken the opportunity to proceed with this long-overdue project now, in a focused and purposeful manner. While Mokuti is already among Namibia’s top safari destinations, we now have the opportunity to totally reimagine the lodge and deliver what could be Namibia’s most loved destination under the theme of “Africa Reimagined”.

We look forward to this new chapter in Mokuti Etosha Lodge’s books and invite you to join us in this very exciting journey.

Namibia: Ongava news | Онгава Лодж Намибия

Ongava update

Namibia’s PCR test requirement is returned to 7 days - it is now possible for long-haul travellers from North America and far-east Asia to reach Namibia within the stipulated PCR test period.

Illustrating the limited source market catchment for travelling to Namibia with the previous 72 hour PCR test requirement. The seven day PCR test allows long-haul / multi-stop access to Namibia.

Thank you to each and every Guest for visiting and contributing to conservation. Since re-opening Ongava Lodge and Little Ongava the guest reviews have been exceptional - it is our privilege to host you on your dream Africa safari.

With the company's excellent vaccine take up, COVID protocols and Safe Mode proving effective and efficient, the initial success since re-opening with two camps in June has provided us with confidence that we're able to operate safely and effectively in the Pandemic.

Our third wave the winter past was more severe than most expected. Twenty-eight percent of our July bookings were affected, most guests postponed and we look forward to hosting them soon! Three bookings cancelled outright and qualified for Ongava's no-quibble Pandemic refund in full.

Mid-August saw bookings stabilise, and September through October both looking strong. Finger's crossed.

As we visualize what the future holds I look forward to comparing notes with the smartest leaders in travel and tourism, the key Africa Specialists from around the world at the We Are Africa Digital Show in September, followed by a We Are Africa pop up event for a limited number of delegates in Cape Town at the beginning of October.

Book with peace of mind

Along with our admired Naturally Namibia partners Ongava has a no quibble 100% refund COVID Cancellation policy, where COVID-19 specific circumstance prevent you from reaching Ongava we refund in full.

World of Change: Managing Fire in the Etosha National Park

Fires used to be routine in the grasslands and woodlands surrounding Etosha Pan, an old, salt-encrusted lake bottom in northwestern Namibia. The region is best known for Etosha National Park, a wildlife preserve that is home to substantial populations of rhinos, elephants, lions, and other large mammals.

Before human intervention, all of Etosha National Park’s savannas and mopane woodlands would burn about once per decade. Fires would usually come after a wet spell had produced a surge of vegetation growth. As plants dried up in this arid region - normal rainfall is 250 to 500 millimeters (10–20 inches) per year - it became ideal tinder for bush fires triggered by lightning storms.

But in the decades after the park’s establishment in 1907, managers tended to extinguish wildfires quickly because they believed them to be harmful to savanna ecosystems. As recently as the 1970s, manmade fires were expressly forbidden and teams of firefighters fought lightning-triggered fires aggressively.

Over the years, fire management at Etosha National Park evolved. With evidence piling up that savannas needed occasional fire to keep the ecosystem healthy, park managers started using it as a tool in 1981. However, there were no firm guidelines on how to use prescribed fires or cope with accidental fires. In September 2011, for instance, a destructive wildfire was ignited by a nearby charcoal kiln. The flames raged through the park, charring 370,000 hectares (910,000 acres) of vegetation and killing at least 30 rhinos, 50 giraffes, and 7 elephants.

Since then, park managers have redoubled their efforts to establish a preventative burning plan to minimize the likelihood of such devastating fires. Lightning-ignited blazes are allowed to burn more frequently, and park managers continue to experiment with prescribed burns that create a patchwork of natural fire breaks. These managed burns also prevent the buildup of excess fuel, meaning future wildfires should be less severe.

Namibia: Ongava News

Happy Days! With Namibia's third wave rapidly waning in time for high season, following last week's Nature Heals message, further good news breaking today: Namibia is removed from the List of Virus Variant Areas, Frankfurter Allgemeine 30.07.2021 - 13:11 Deutschland streicht afrikanische Staaten von Virusvariantenliste

We’re grateful for the exemplary appetite for the vaccines among our colleagues who responded enthusiastically as soon as they became available in Namibia. Staff have been receiving their vaccine regimen at the designated health centres in the various districts and also at Ongava.

May 8, 2021: “Ongava's much reduced workforce volunteered for our first COVID-19 vaccinations over the weekend. We are grateful for Ministry of Health and Social Services-Namibia Outjo Staff who travelled to Ongava, generously giving up their weekend. Namibia: Ongava news | Новости Онгава Лодж Намибия

Ongava News

I hope this message finds you in good health and spirits? We are happy to report that we are in fine fettle despite having endured drought, flood, earthquake, fire and plague – both locusts and Coronavirus – all in the past 36-months. It would seem the ancient Chinese curse … may you live in interesting times … is playing out in full.

As always first and foremost is to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your brilliant support and encouragement through these character building times. We are touched and motivated by your enthusiasm and positive reinforcement for that which Ongava does and believes. While we were disappointed by the treatment Africa camps and lodges experienced since lockdown we understand the one-sided consumer protection legislation provides their justification.

In the absence of any state support the Africa camps and lodges set about rescuing their businesses. Sadly, this cost cutting entailed mass retrenchments of loyal colleagues. For Ongava we reduced the remaining staff wage bill and remain on reduced wages for the foreseeable future. To squeeze out the funds to the bare minimum overhead all non-critical activities were suspended, capital projects frozen and bank debt commitments re-negotiated. At the same time we reinforced protection of the wildlife. To avoid security personnel contracting COVID-19 the Reserve has remained in lockdown. We are relieved that no Ongava or Ongava Research Centre staff member has tested positive to date.

The vaccine rollout has allowed Ongava to review lockdown and partially open from June 2021. On April 15th 2021 we announced following fourteen months of closure we’re thrilled to share that we are back in business; emerging from suspension of services Ongava will be taking our first tentative steps into reactivating hospitality on Tuesday June 1st, 2021. Our goal is to get one, possibly two camps off life support and standing on their own two feet. Once we achieve the first two camps becoming financially self-sustaining we’ll review opening additional camps.

The Ongava team is closely monitoring the ongoing Covid-19 developments worldwide as the health and welfare of our guests, staff and their families will at all times continue to be our primary concern. Whilst the pandemic remains official Ongava hospitality services will operate in Safe Mode. We would like to share with you some of the additional procedures that we have implemented to give you peace of mind when returning to the Ongava Game Reserve.

We have always focused on strict sanitation procedures at all our properties, and in light of Covid-19, we are following the advice issued by local government and incorporating all updates issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) into our policies.

Our lodges have been designed with space and exclusivity in mind and therefore the public spaces such as the dining area allows sufficient space for social distancing and all our guests will be advised to practise safe social distancing protocols.

Our team further understand that it is crucial to take extraordinary measures to stay healthy and to respond to new requirements and expectations. Therefore, every member of the Ongava team is provided with ongoing training on sanitation and social distancing protocols with more comprehensive guidelines given to guest-facing staff and our housekeeping team.

Ongava Safe Mode

We are confronted with a radically changed landscape that requires adaptation to survive. The following will apply for the duration of Safe Mode:

° Initially Ongava Lodge and Little Ongava will welcome all guests

° Bookings made at Anderssons and at Ongava Tented Camp will be offered to change to Ongava Lodge or upgrade to Little Ongava.

° Priority will be awarded to fully paid bookings.

° All Bookings that do not have a deposit paid to Ongava at twenty-one days prior to check in will be released.

° Full payment of published rates prior to arrival qualify for 2,5% discount.

° Ongava is happy to waive Cancellation Penalty up to 48 hours prior to check-in at accommodation, in connection of a COVID-19 related termination: COVID-19 cancellation is related to border closures or suspected illness of the guest. The guest(s) in question will need to provide reasonable support for the failure to travel. Please refer to Ongava General Information Manual [pdf, 354kb] cancellation policy for full information.

°° No Shows are charged in full, irrespective of any circumstances.

°° Travel Insurance remains a condition for booking Ongava, for your peace of mind ensure that you are insured for COVID-19 and related issues, both health and travel insurance, no exceptions will be entertained or granted.

° As always, and particularly during the pandemic we encourage responsible behaviour – regardless of vaccine status no person is 100% immune to COVID-19. Ongava is intolerant of transgressors that pose a hazard to fellow travelers, guides, pilots, hospitality and game reserve staff.

° Ongava Safe Mode is the modus operandi for the business for the duration of the official World Health Organisation SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic. As conditions change Safe Mode will be reviewed periodically.

The 21-day threshold

° Firstly, we (the caretakers of the land and wildlife) hold most of the risk.

° In the Pandemic travel uncertainty there are myriad “what if’s” affecting international travel. Through the fog of uncertainty Ongava seeks to have a fairly accurate idea who is arriving in three weeks’ time i.e. before we incur the direct costs such as diesel, food etc.

° What happens on the booking sheets prior to the three week practical threshold is largely abstract and theoretical. What we are focused on is preparing for the Guests that are actually going to Check In, and ensuring their stay exceeds their expectations in every respect.

° Were we to continue our old system we would discover the evening of their booking that a guest does not materialize. Of course, we’ll attempt to levy cancellation penalty – but we see these are rejected the past 13 months. Neither does travel insurance stump up. This will be ruinous for our business. It is a risk that Ongava is not prepared to take. When we book hotels in Europe, UK, USA we have to pay in full at time of booking, Ongava is applying the same at 21-days prior to Check In.

° While postponing bookings seemed to be the smart response at the time, on account of the continued Pandemic uncertainty, we expect only one in five bookings on our system to materialize. Ongava cannot afford to have four-fifths of our rooms “booked” and not travel – Safe Mode is designed to clear the committed from the maybes.

° We cannot risk opening for “maybe” bookings: one-fifth of our 2021 bookings is equivalent of 9% occupancy across the four properties and 18% occupancy if we can fit all of them (unlikely) into Ongava Lodge and Little Ongava. We have to try and sift the maybe bookings out so that we can try to sell the distressed space last minute.

° As we have experienced neither are Deposits reliable either. We are unable to find another way, other than full payment, to achieve the need to determine which booking is real versus the unreliable bookings.

° Being paid in full before a booking arrives is perfectly reasonable. This is not about advancing cash flow, it is 100% about being fairly paid for the actual guests that we do host. Where bookings are in competition for space we need to secure the booking that is most likely to travel. We do that by requesting payment in full. The guest that is prepared to pay gets the booking.

° Free cancellation up to 21-days prior to check in and receive full refund:

° for fully paid bookings, should their situation change prior the 21-day threshold, and they cannot travel for any reason, the guests can choose to postpone (Ongava retains the payment) and honour current year rate for any future year postponement (barring seasonal rate changes). Or,

° Where guests choose to cancel, their payment will be returned in full. So long as Ongava has 21-days (or more) to try to resell the distressed beds. As opposed to zero days to remedy the situation were the previous system perpetuated when we discover on the day of Check In that the Guests do not show up.

° To reiterate: Free cancellation for any reason with full refund for bookings that are confirmed (paid in full) in advance. However, once the 21-day threshold has passed on a confirmed (paid in full) booking the normal escalation penalties apply (exceptions where the specific COVID-19 exceptions are met):

It is with regret that we cannot make exceptions – we treat all Guest and Agents fairly by providing equal opportunity during these trying times to kickstart and rebuild their businesses again.

We are excited to warmly welcome you back to the Ongava Game Reserve. If you have any questions or need assistance please do not hesitate to contact the reservations team.

We and the wildlife are thrilled to welcome you soon!

Namibia: Ongava Camps Opening Date | Онгава Намибия

Ongava Camps Opening Date

Warm Greetings from Namibia, I hope this missive finds you in good health and spirits? After such a tumultuous year we would like to say thank you very much for your understanding and support as we navigated through the various trials and tribulations. The wonderful vaccines news, and taking cognisance of Guest and Agent feedback, we have a firm announcement of Ongava’s re-opening:

The Ongava camps re-open on Tuesday June 1st, 2021.

It follows that Ongava hospitality operations closure, previously April through December 2020, is extended to Monday May 31st, 2021. We sincerely regret the inconvenience for Guests affected. Ongava Reservations will be in contact with you for bookings affected by Ongava closure. Affected Guests are encouraged to select new dates with our no-fee change / no annual rate increase offer through to 31st December 2022, or, cancel, and be fully refunded.

The 2020 Coronavirus experience shows the seasonal decrease in northern hemisphere infection rates in summer, coupled with the roll out of immunisation programs. Based on this we believe mid-2021 will see safe travel commencing at scale. Please see below for more details on how we anticipate this to develop.

To further emphasise and mark the Ongava re-opening of hospitality we are extending two great Specials:

° in recognition of their selfless commitment and courage all bona fide Frontline Healthcare workers qualify for a full -35% off Ongava Recommended Rate up to 31 December 2022.

° the Ongava Long Stay Special - less 25% for bookings from four days and more - will also be available through High Season 2021.

For nature's sake

We are savouring the spectacular news on vaccine advances - thank you science. Now for the next mighty challenge - to achieve production, logistics and immunization at global scale will take years. That puts the pandemic end date around 2025 or longer. Or never if anti-vaxxers get their way.

The trickle of pilgrims and domestic visitors now braving the risks and travelling is currently insufficient to pay the rent for nature tourism. In the absence of safe travel at scale the failure of nature based tourism will be severe. Natural habitat will succumb to the cow and the plough. Decades of conservation successes are staring into the abyss of permanent failure. The rollback of conservation estate will be immense. And permanent. Appetite for global donations will become harder to stimulate as developed world nations look increasingly inward to address their internal challenges brought on by the pandemic destruction. With most community and conservation projects now running on charitable donations the prospects are dim. Nature based tourism may not survive another year. Never mind five or more years until herd immunity is judged to be sufficient to end the pandemic.

What are the options to create safe travel conditions at scale? Will Switzerland based non-profit CommonPass in partnership with The World Economic Forum and backing from The Rockefeller Foundation already engaged with 140 countries offer a system for safe travel at scale during the pandemic?

If CommonPass, and similar systems, succeed then economies, airlines, travel agents, hotels and lodges and their myriad support services will have a chance of survival.

We believe the Digital Health Passports will instill confidence in travellers and in the national authorities - as negative COVID-19 tests will become much harder to fake with digital technology that verifies the test with registered and certified pathology labs.

As the systems gain traction we believe that Digital Health Passports will enable safe travel at scale by mid-2021.

Irina, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Digital Health Passports and please use every opportunity to advocate for this technology among your friends, family, social and business network.

Safe travel at scale

For safe travel to resume at scale requires Health Bubbles / Safe Corridors / Vaccine Tunnels. Several major airlines will soon use a digital platform to assess passenger Covid-19 status; “The Commons Project, The World Economic Forum and a broad coalition of public and private partners are collaborating to launch CommonPass, a trusted, globally-interoperable platform for people to document their COVID-19 status (health declarations / PCR tests / vaccinations) to satisfy country entry requirements, while protecting their health data privacy.”

“JetBlue, Lufthansa, Swiss International Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic will begin the roll-out of CommonPass in December on select flights departing from New York, Boston, London, and Hong Kong.”

About CommonPass

CommonPass allows a safer return to work, school, travel and life by enabling you to share your health/vaccine status while protecting your data & privacy.

For global travel and trade to return to pre-pandemic levels, travelers will need a secure and verifiable way to document their health status as they travel and cross borders. Countries will need to be able to trust that a traveller’s record of a COVID PCR test or vaccination administered in another country is valid. Countries will also need the flexibility to update their health screening entry requirements as the pandemic evolves and science progresses. Airlines, airports and other travel industry stakeholders will need the same. The Commons Project together with The World Economic Forum is working to initiate the CommonPass framework to address those challenges.

CommonPass is not a contract tracing app and does not collect location information on its users, except for when explicitly granted by the user. In addition to being GDPR compliant, CommonPass allows individuals to control who has access to their data and when. At any time, an individual can remove their personal data from the CommonPass app.

How it works

The CommonPass framework will allow individuals to access their lab results and vaccination records, and consent to have that information used to validate their COVID status without revealing any other underlying personal health information. Lab results and vaccination records can be accessed through existing health data systems, national or local registries or personal digital health records (Apple Health for iOS, CommonHealth for Android). Apple Health and CommonHealth let individuals store their health records securely and privately on their phones, entirely under their control.

The framework will assess whether the individual’s lab test results or vaccination records (1) come from a trusted source, and (2) satisfy the health screening requirements of the country they want to enter. The framework delivers a simple yes/no answer as to whether the individual meets the current entry criteria, but the underlying health information stays in the individual’s control. The framework is being designed such that it can be accessed directly through other apps and services.

CommonPass media and resources

Eyewitness News, ABC7, USA: Group works to return international air travel to normal

Forbes, USA: Some Air Passengers Are Faking Negative Covid-19 Test Results, Per U.K. Reports.

Safe, unrestricted travel

Our sympathies to those who are suffering. And who have lost loved ones. We wish you good health while we wait – with great anticipation – for safe, unrestricted travel.

As always please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions.

Kind Regards

Namibia: Reopening of Ongava Game Reserve | Онгава Намибия

People at the center of conservation at Ongava

Namibia's well-entrenched Parks and People policies empower communities to sustainably utilise their ancestral land. The enlightened approach has lead to upwards of half of Namibia's land surface area achieving one or other degree of conservation status. Of which approximately 17% of our country's conservation estate is the proclaimed protected areas such as the giant Namib-Naukluft and Etosha National Parks.

The nation's Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) legislation make provision for communities to form legally recognised entities that have rights to sustainably utilise their natural resources (the legal terminology: they are granted usufruct).

For National Parks, in the absence of a resident community, the immediate neighbouring Community qualifies as "the resident Community". The original inhabitants of the Etosha region are the Hai//om Community, of which the last of the free-living Hai//om "San Bushman" of Etosha were corralled 65 years ago. As their freedoms reduced they experienced increasing socio-economic marginalisation.

The democratically elected government of Namibia began to make reparations for this injustice including the award of a significant expanse of the south-central portion of the Etosha National Park, and related resettlement farms along the southern boundary have been acquired, to form a remedial project to develop a sustainable range of benefits for the dispossessed community upon their ancestral land.

Following state resource tender procedures the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism supported the Community in identifying a private sector investor and operator. Of the proposals submitted during the formal RFP we at Ongava, together with our empowerment partners, are delighted to be selected as the preferred bidder by the !Gobaub Association, representing the Hai//om Community.

Nature First is the singular focus that guides Ongava. The intention of the Ongava impact investment is to provide diverse upliftment opportunities for the rural community, opportunities that will empower the community to command agency over their destiny in a sustainable manner. Here’s a fun overview:

The Ongava Hai//om joint venture

Community-based Natural Resource Management in Namibia

The legendary conservationist Ian Player was the first to articulate, using the allegory of a three-legged traditional cooking pot, that successful conservation requires three pillars to be in harmony - Conservation, Commerce and Community. We couldn't think of a more relevant Community than our neighbours - the Hai//om - to embark on this ambitious rewilding, renewal and reintroduction project.

Adventure beckons! ELENA, we look forward to sharing this vital journey with you. Meet our Partners, the Hai//om (pronounced “Hi Com”, "//" denotes a click in the middle):

We are the Rhino Shepherds

Ongava Camps closure April 2020 - May 2021

To matters at hand - for many years our business has been built on warm hospitality and memorable wildlife experiences, which is at odds with social distancing. Our focus is on the well-being of our families, our colleagues and our fellow citizens and - as previously communicated - Ongava hospitality operations remain suspended up to May 31st, 2021.

Ongava is an enclave of calm where nature can go about its business unhindered – young impala rams play-fighting, a bumblebee busily pollinating an acacia blossom, a ground squirrel balancing on his hind limbs surveying his harem. A pride of tawny beasts, pads puffing dust, seek shade. Francolins fuss, a cicada heralds the blazing midday heat.

Opening Specials

Ongava hospitality reopens on Tuesday June 1st, 2021 with fantastic Specials for frontline health care workers and long stay guests:

In recognition of their selfless commitment and courage Frontline Healthcare workers qualify for 35% off Ongava Recommended Selling (Rack) Rate up to 31 December 2022.

The Ongava Long Stay Special - less 25% for bookings from four days and more - is extended through High Season 2021 ends June 2022.

Ongava Reservations service continues uninterrupted apart from 24 December (Christmas Eve), 25 December (Christmas Day), 26 December (Family Day), 31 December (Old Year’s Eve), and 1 January (New Year’s Day).

As always please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions.

Compliments of the Season!

We can barely contain our excitement at all the wonderful adventures and developments that lie in store. It is only appropriate that we thank you for helping us to protect wild places and endangered species.

It is my fervent desire that we can share a cheerful campfire under the southern cross in the not too distant future.

Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a safe, successful 2021.
