Namibia: Stars of Africa: Two new camps in northern Namibia

Stars of Africa

Two new camps in northern Namibia

Ohorongo Private Game Reserve is a 35,000-hectare tract of wilderness located in the Namibian Highlands between Etosha National Park to the northeast and the Swakopmund in the south.

Ohorongo Tented Camp

Ohorongo Tented Camp is located in the western region of the Ohorongo Private Game Reserve, and it is magnificently built into the granite boulders of a rocky outcrop. There are five tented suites, elevated on wooden decks, with private terraces, outdoor showers, and comfortable in-room amenities. It is designed to keep you close to mother nature, wrapped under canvas, while offering you the modern luxuries of a lodge.

Remote, intimate & captivating

The facilities at Ohorongo Tented Camp are equipped for comfort and simplistic safari style. The five tented rooms have en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers with a double vanity. To the front of the tents are private viewing decks complete with sun loungers.

Common areas include the swimming pool which is built into a wooden deck with a selection of loungers and a shaded area under thatch. At the foot of the rocky outcrop is a fire pit where the evening’s fireside chatter takes place and a thatched rondavel alongside it is a dining area.

Higher up on the hill is the best seat in the house – a raised deck under thatch with a dining table for dinners with a view of the landscape under the moon, and a firepit outside to gather around the flames and enjoy a drink at the highest point under the stars, overlooking the reserve.

Ohorongo Private Game Reserve Location

Namibia is a place all of its own, and the location of Ohorongo Private Game Reserve occupies a unique semi-desert territory that offers a sense of wilderness not easily replicated.

To the west of Ohorongo is the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland, home of the specially adapted population of desert lions and elephants that defy expectations; to the northeast is Etosha National Park, where waterholes are humming with the presence of wildlife.

In the north-western highlands of the country, it is about 350 km north of both Windhoek and Swakopmund and is ideally combined with a trip to Etosha and even further into the Zambezi region in the northeast for the Namibian trifecta.

Ohorongo Safari Lodge

Ohorongo Safari Lodge is the original household on Ohorongo Private Game Reserve, now converted into a private guest space with five en-suite chalets, traditionally decorated and kept cool between thatch and tile. Shared outdoor spaces are peaceful and offer comfortable places to relax while listening to the birdlife and admiring the lovingly maintained desert garden.

Chalets under thatch

Ohorongo Safari Lodge is a five-bedroomed lodge consisting of individual bungalows with their own en-suite facilities. Each bungalow can accommodate two adults with space for a child, making it ideal for families with children of varying ages. Facilities are about comfort and convenient, but there is an emphasis on simplicity and traditionality without taking away from the natural appeal of a retreat in the Namibian northern territory.

Botswana: Stars of Africa's new camps

NEW COMMUNITY CONCESSION CAMPS OPEN IN BOTSWANA

Stars of Africa, a company that has a collection of safari camps, private game reserves, luxury hotels, beach retreats, and wine estates in Southern and Eastern Africa, has opened two exciting new camps in Botswana.

The first of these is the exciting African Excursions Guest House, which is in the Khwai Community Concession in the northeast of the Okavango Delta, adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. The second is Mogogelo Camp, which is in a private, game-rich concession area on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta.

African Excursion Guest House offers comfortable accommodation in 7 classic thatched chalets with glass sliding doors, twin or double rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and a small deck area overlooking the garden. It offers a family-friendly way to explore the delta in one of Botswana’s most active wildlife areas.

Mogogelo offers 10 classic canvas suites, raised on wooden decks and with en-suite bathrooms and private decks. All have a view of the waterhole and the wildlife that visit it. Facilities at the camp include a thatched dining area with a bar, an outdoor lounge, a swimming pool, and a traditional fire pit looking toward the waterhole.

Both are easily reached from Maun which makes them convenient for any itinerary but also allows for self-drive use. Being in locally-owned concessions means that fees paid, go directly into benefiting the indigenous communities with facilities such as schools and clinics as decided by a community trust as well as providing employment.

There is a varied range of activities available within both camps' private concessions; day and night game drives, walking safaris with local guides, and mokoro (traditional canoe) rides dependent on seasonal water levels. African Excursion also offers full-day trips into the neighboring Moremi Game Reserve.
