Andy's Pub is one of the most popular German Pubs in Windhoek with great food and drinks to choose from. Come join us and feel the experience!

Yummy, relaxed, funny.

Andy’s Pub & Restaurant is a European bistro in the capital of Namibia offering everything from Pizza, Schnitzel, Steaks to famous German dishes such as home made Curry Wurst in a comfortable pub atmosphere. Andy’s pub is probably the most famous German Pub in Windhoek with two beer gardens and is said to be the perfect place to watch sports on one of the several big LED TV’s mounted on the walls throughout the pub.

Address: 318 Sam Nujoma Drive, Klein Windhoek, Namibia.

Categories: German Restaurant, Sports Bar, Beer Bar.

Local Experience

This is the place to go if you want to feel part of the locals in Windhoek. The service is very laid back but it is only a bad thing if you are in a hurry. Therefore go with an open mind and enjoy the atmosphere. The bar is small and intimate. A bar in the full sense of the word if you take into account that people can smoke in here. The interior is crazy full with very interesting mementos especially car license plates. They are famous for their pizza and curried sausage with chips. Don’t expect French cuisine. The beer is very popular. Enjoy it with a soccer or rugby game on the TV and you will have a real Namibian local experience.

Great Pizza and Curried Sausage

Andy’s is an eclectic mix of characters and loyal supporters that frequent this little pub in Klein Windhoek. Andy’s is a larger than life sort of publican – that serves the best pizza and curried sausage and chips in Windhoek. The food is quick, the beers are cold and the price is great.

Great place - Excellent Food

If you are coming to Andy's because you want specifically a meal, please perform this during the earlier hours as the pub gets crowded very quickly which causes delays in service. But that is expected as This establishment is more of a "bar" then a restaurant and the focus is on sitting with your friends, enjoying drinks and good conversations. The opinions of the other commenters were that they would walk in, receive a meal quickly, eat and have some drinks. That is not what this establishment is about. It is a "Beer Garden" in the typical German sense. You come to drink, if you want food, order but you are there for the atmosphere, not the haste service.

If you want quick, good food with a nice atmosphere, go to Sardinia's, however if you want arguable the best pizza in town come to Andy's. Just plan to sit down, have a few drinks with friends and be patient. Even in the most crowded of situations, a pizza will take 45 minutes to an hour, enough time to take down a couple pints with your guests and relax.

Andy's has some of the best food in town at great prices but be aware, this is no Nando's with 15 minute service. Come for the beers, cheers and if you want food, order it upfront when you get your drinks, just please, no more tears.

Nice bar to hang out

A funny bar where you don't find too many tourists. It's a nice place to have some beers, watch football and to have fun. The service must have improved. In general the waitresses and waiters are attentive. I like the ribs there.

Namibia: Windhoek railway bridge as working landmark

Namibia's working landmark - Windhoek railway bridge

One of Namibia’s most prominent bridges is the wrought-iron Avis railway bridge under which every visitor arriving from the airport must pass on his way to Windhoek city centre.

Although the bridge may go unnoticed by present day traveller, in the 1920s the building of the railway from Windhoek to Gobabis and the construction of the Avis railway bridge on the outskirts of the city were country's milestone events.

Before The Bridge

Up until then the journey to the eastern reaches of the country included a gruelling 20 km section undertaken by ox-wagons over the Auas Mountains and across the Klein Windhoek River. The terrain was so challenging that the oxen needed to outspan, quench their thirst and rest at the Kapps Farm before they could continue with their journey.

Also referred to as an "ox-wagon hotel", the hotel at the Kapps Farm provided accommodation to the touleiers (team leaders), as did the next stop at Seeis further along the route. The hotels were dotted along the ox-wagon routes, a day apart from each other, providing rest and replenishment for both human and animal after the long day’s journey.

Linking Namibia east to west

The construction of the first 27 km of railway line from Windhoek to Kapps Farm began on the 24th August 1921. The steel substructures for the 93 m bridge over the Klein Windhoek River were brought in from Cape Town and assembled on site, supported by four concrete pillars. The bridge was completed in 1922, making it a hundred years old this year.

It formed an important section of the Windhoek to Gobabis railway line that was built by the SAR - South African Railways, linking the cattle growing farming area of Namibia's east to the interior, and from there to South Africa. The railway line was completed in 1929. The infrastructure – buildings and water points – were completed over the following year. The official opening took place on 6 November 1930.

History

The British explorer James Alexander had already visited the area of present Klein Windhoek in 1837. Klein Windhoek is the oldest part of the town, having been established in 1840 by Jonker Afrikaner and his 800-strong group. He had requested the services of a missionary, and the Rhenish Missionary Society (RMS) built the first house in the area in the same year. In 1842, missionaries Carl Hugo Hahn and Franz Heinrich Kleinschmidt worked here. They called the place Elberfeld, but Jonker Afrikaner's name prevailed. They were replaced by Wesleyan missionaries in 1844.

In 1896, Roman Catholic missionaries arrived. They purchased the RMS land in 1899 and converted it into an orchard and vineyard. In early 1900s Klein Windhoek was run by a separate municipality.

1909: Windhoek is an independent municipality with Gustav Voigts as the first Mayor. First Mayor of Klein Windhoek is Amandus Fritsche.

1921: Klein Windhoek falls under jurisdiction of Windhoek.

Klein Windhoek is a home for several embassies and diplomatic missions, including Russian Embassy (Christian Street), South African High Commission (in tall prominent building of old Berg Hotel), Embassy of Venezuela and Embassy of Egypt. Klein Windhoek River divides this suburb in two parts. Windhoek city center is located over a large hill from Klein Windhoek.

John Ludwig is considered the founder of Klein Windhoek. Born in Germany on 03 April 1857, he bought a farm in Griqualand West in South Africa after completion of his service in the Cape Police. Some of his endeavors included a restaurant "Ludwigslust" as well as tobacco farming. John Ludwig died in Windhoek on 27 February 1913 after a stomach surgery and was the first person to be buried in Klein Windhoek cemetery. His wife Lida died in 1954 and buried beside him.
