South Africa: news from Jambo Guest House

"The Cape is the stateliest thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the World.”
Sir Francis Drake, English sea captain and explorer, on seeing the Cape for the first time, 1580.

Yet another year has passed here in Cape Town and what a year it has been! After the water problems, this past winter was back to normal as far as the weather was concerned and, we are happy to report that the reservoirs are close to full and water restrictions have been lifted somewhat.

The World can learn from Cape Town that has become a city of water savers against all odds.  The effects of global warming are manifesting all over the World telling humanity that it is time to conserve the gifts of nature. Fresh water amounts to less than 3% of the World’s total and should be used carefully.

This is about more than just water – Cape Town is a world-renowned travel destination, so sustainability is always going to be a focus in our unique attractions.

Our garden at Jambo did take some strain but we were nevertheless rewarded with our usual array of Spring flowers from the Clivias, the Wisteria growing over the front fence with its heavily scented flowers looking like bunches of grapes, the Port Wine Magnolia with its tantalizing scent and the Petrea over the front gable, all burst forth in bloom to tell us that Winter was over !

In our Waterfront, The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) is fast becoming one of Cape Town’s top tourist attractions having opened on September 22 last year.

“There are not just a hundred visitors a day, but thousands.” says Mark Coetzee, Director and Chief Curator.  Tour operators have informed Coetzee that they have seen clients extending their stay, just for the museum, mentioning that Cape Town is rapidly becoming an international cultural destination. Audio tours are in English and Afrikaans now, with other languages to be introduced soon. The live tours are available in German, French and other European languages.

Zeitz MOCAA offers a range of activities, such as lectures, temporary exhibitions, and children’s readings.

If you are pressed for time, there is a highlights tour that visits two out of the museum’s nine floors. These floors are home to Zeitz MOCAA’s permanent collection, and best represent African art and culture.

Furthermore, there is an architectural tour and an educational tour, averaging around 40 minutes. The gallery is housed in what was formerly grain storage silos and is an architectural masterpiece.

Take a look at the progress in Cape Town!  Building operations are taking place everywhere!  Not surprising as everyone wants to come and to be here.  There is so much to do and see.

Jambo Guest House is truly centrally situated.  Our guests can walk to the V & A Waterfront (1 km) Next to the Waterfront, on Saturday and Sunday they will find a superb food market - catering for all - vegetarians, vegans, and chocolate brownie lovers!  Suddenly Cheryl Ozinsky, the market founder, announced that whales could be seen in the distance and we were lucky enough to spot them while sitting with our coffee and snacks.  A rare treat for December!

The Green Point Urban Park is directly across the road from Jambo where on weekends many celebrate their children’s and grandchildren’s birthdays in grand style. At the cafe in the park one can relax with coffee and a snack or even a slice of their excellent baked cheesecake!   The children have a lovely and secure play area, can ride their bikes and scooters and watch the multitude of fish, coots, geese and ducks, hadeda ibis and of course seagulls.  On the other side of the biggest lake one can watch the golfers and weather permitting, see the para-sailors flying from Signal Hill.   The park is open daily from seven to seven and is patrolled by helpful guides.  Halfway down the main path is the Virgin Active Fitness Centre and it continues to the beach front at Mouille Point Lighthouse.

The Hop-on, Hop-off busses have increased their routes and are more flexible and we have thoroughly enjoyed a day touring the inner city and the blue, mini peninsula tour.  This tour includes a visit to wineries some of which we have never visited before and being on the bus we could enjoy tasting wines.

We are now official agents and can now organise your tickets for you at breakfast, before you start your day of sightseeing, we can check the weather and advise you on which is the most suitable for that day.

This year South Africa has been voted as one of the top travel destinations by both luxury travel network, Virtuoso and Lonely Planet both luxury travel network, Virtuoso and Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world.

In Virtuoso’s 2018 Luxe Report, South Africa shone in the categories of Top Global Destinations, Top Millennial Destinations and Top Adventure Destinations, based on insights from travel agencies across the globe.

Lonely Planet selected South Africa as one of the top ten countries to visit in its Best in Travel 2018 list, saying: “Beaches and mountains, wildlife and wine, and let’s not forget vibrant culture and cosmopolitan Cape Town – South Africa has long been one of the world’s most alluring countries…With more to see than ever, and favourable exchange rates offering great value, 2018/19 is a phenomenal time to visit South Africa.”

While it may be one of this year’s hottest travel spots, a whole lot of celebrities have long had a love affair with South Africa. Here’s what some have had to say:

Celebrity chef, Heston Blumenthal:- “The South African cuisine you see today is refined, balanced and quite modern in terms of its lightness, but showcasing South African produce. They have beautiful fish and seafood down there, from hake and yellowtail to the west-coast mussels and oysters from Knysna. The meat is also exceptional.”

Tennis champion, Roger Federer is so enamoured with South Africa that he even owns a home in Knysna, his favourite childhood holiday spot. He says: “My heart is in South Africa, through my mum. My mum being from here and me spending a lot of time here as well, I feel most connected to this part of the world”

Hollywood actor Leonardo di Caprio loves South Africa after experiencing amazing animal encounters here. “South Africa’s natural beauty is unmatched”

It is now easier than ever to get here with Edelweiss Air having added an extra flight to its Zurich-Cape Town route, taking the number of weekly flights to four and Austrian Airlines now offering two weekly flights between Cape Town and Vienna.  The Austrian Airlines service to Cape Town offers a Premium Economy Class, which until now has only been available on Lufthansa aircraft.

The Western Cape is now becoming more well known for its countless craft beer and gin-making options.
There are almost 100 artisanal gins now available in South Africa and the number is steadily growing. Craft beer is even bigger and covers all nine provinces.

One of my favourite gins is Inverroche, produced on the Garden Route is Stilbaai, not too far from us. It has become one of the best-known South African gins.   If you happen to be passing there, they offer a combination of a distillery tour, gin tasting and a fascinating gin school.”

Whilst on the subject of drinks, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky (one of my personal favourites!)  has clinched the title of World’s Best Grain Whisky and founder distiller, Andy Watts was awarded the title of global Icon of Whisky Master Distiller/Master Blender for 2018.

These awards held annually by the UK’s Whisky Magazine attract a lot of competition from well-known Scottish, Irish, American, Japanese, Taiwanese and other whiskies from around the world.

Watts attended a gala dinner held at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London to receive the awards and says the win was overwhelming news for the brand and SA: “We have overcome the odds against the perceived perception that only traditional whisky producing countries can be taken seriously."

He adds: "Our industry in SA is only 40 years old and although we’ve had many hurdles along the way, we have become innovative in our approach to manage our unique warmer climate, found creative ways to use home-grown raw material to our best advantage and constantly strive for crafting exceptional whiskies.

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, the only whisky in the world to be made from 100% South African maize (mielies), is incredibly smooth due to its rather unique double maturation over a five-year period in casks previously used for Bourbon.
The warmer climate is also a contributing factor which accelerates the interaction between wood, spirit and air during maturation, resulting in a much smoother whisky at a younger age usually associated with more mature whiskies.
It took Andy 10 years to develop Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky before it was released in 2009 and since then, this whisky has created a tidal wave of interest for its unique taste.

The whisky was first named World’s Best Grain Whisky in 2013 and has received gold and double gold at all the major international whisky competitions.

So, let us raise a glass to your next visit!

In case you were thinking of a trip to the "Fairest Cape” keep in mind that there is still a very favourable exchange rate so your Pounds, Dollars and Euros will go very far.

It is a great time to visit SA again.

° A pound is worth approximately R17.98 today.
° A Euro is worth approximately R16.00 today.
° A US Dollar is worth approximately R14.11 today,
° and that means a South African trip is better value for money than ever before.
We hope you had a wonderful festive season and we wish you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2019.

South Africa: news from Jambo Guest House

To all our dear friends, hello from Barry and Mina at Jambo Guest House.

This past spring, in our own garden, our Clivias, the Wisteria over the front fence, the Port Wine Magnolia with its tantalizing scent and the Petrea over the front gable, all burst forth in bloom to herald the arrival of spring and to cheer us up just when we needed it most.  In May Barry had a double knee replacement operation and now has two new knees.  Although it is supposed to take a year to recover, Barry is up and (almost) running already and you would probably not notice that he has new knees.

Needless to say, we didn’t take a holiday this year but instead, we took short breaks and re-discovered our own beautiful part of the World.  The weather was great even though it was winter, but sadly we do need the rain.

Due to the dry winters, some of you may have heard that Cape Town is experiencing a severe water shortage and it has become staple dinner-table and radio talk show conversation.  At Jambo, Barry has installed rainwater collection tanks, water filters and booster pumps and reduced flow rates so we don’t anticipate any further water shortage problems at the guest house.

As if we didn’t already know and it is what we have always known -  Cape Town has for the 5th time been voted the best city in the World by the readers of The Telegraph in Britain.  According to the 90 000 readers who voted in the annual Telegraph Travel Awards, Cape Town was the number one city beating cities like Vancouver and Tokyo.

According to the newspaper's website, Cape Town gained the title for its coastal location, overshadowed by Table Mountain, great wine and Boulders Beach where African penguins roam freely.

Also, only last month, Cape Town was of the 19 cities which joined a list of 180 which have been recognised for their contributions to the development of art and design.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, OBE, the famous explorer, who spent the first 12 years of his life growing up near Cape Town says that it is the most beautiful country in the world and all our guests agree.
Jambo is truly very centrally situated, close to many of Cape Town’s "must see" sights and beaches.

According to the UK Post Office Travel Money’s annual Long-Haul Holiday Report, the city of Cape Town has topped the list of best value for your money destinations.   Conducted by comparing the cost of 10 tourist items — including coffee, cocktails and dinner — in 34 cities and resorts around the world, Cape Town came out on top.

South Africa was also recently awarded the Star All-Round Destination accolade in the Travel Bulletin Star Awards, the UK’s most prestigious awards program, held at the Langham Hotel in London.
The awards were voted for by UK travel agents.

The country was also recognised in several categories of the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Travel Awards 2017, held earlier this year in London. Readers were asked to rate their favourite countries, cities, islands, hotels, spas, airlines and tour operators.

It is now easier than ever to get here with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Edelweiss and Eurowings adding or increasing frequency of flights to Cape Town. Eurowings, a low-cost carrier that is part of the Lufthansa Group, launched flights between Cologne and Cape Town in November this year.

So, if a holiday in our ‘Mother City’ may not have been on the cards, perhaps you should think again: -

There is a very favourable exchange rate, so your Pounds, Dollars and Euros will go very far.

We have some of the best wines in the world and have been producing them since 1659 which is when the first grapes were pressed in Constantia and today we are listed 9th in the World in terms of production.  There are more than 200 wineries within half an hour drive from Jambo Guest House.  If you are driving yourselves we will show you a route for a whole day’s tour visiting our favourite wineries in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.  Alternatively, we can book you on a tour with experienced guides.

Surfers can find some of the best waves to ride from the monster break at” Dungeons” near Hout Bay, which can be 15 metres high (though only in winter) to a gentle wave in Muizenberg where beginners can learn to surf.

Our guests can enjoy anything from snorkelling with hundreds of Cape Fur Seals off Duiker

Island to sea kayaking near the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach. In the winter months, you can sea kayak with Southern Right Whales in Hermanus which is a nice days outing.

Coffee snobs - visit Truth Coffee in town, voted the best by the UK’s Daily Telegraph for the second year running.  We prefer Giovanni’s just down the road!

For steak lovers, we have the best meat on the planet and many superb restaurants in which to enjoy it, from downtown eateries with panoramic views of the city and Table Mountain to the two oceans at Cape Point with views over both Atlantic and Indian oceans.

Cape Town is famous for having fresh fish and seafood at our restaurants and of course, we have many superb restaurants close by. We will recommend some of the best ones and help you with directions.

The Waterfront has been busy this year hosting not one but two ocean races.   The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, a sailing race around the world in 8 legs, with trained amateur crew members, made a stopover here in Cape Town. The organisers own a fleet of identical yachts, the Clipper 70, and provide qualified skippers to lead each team. The crew can either sign up for the whole race, or one or more legs. The race was conceived in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox Johnson who founded Clipper Ventures plc as a company to run the race. The race ran every two years between 1996 and 2002, and then skipped a year, with subsequent races beginning in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2017

The Clipper Race uses lighter, faster boats and the route follows the prevailing currents and winds. The current fleet of yachts is 12 Clipper 70 yachts first used in the 2013-14 race. The race has used two other previous classes of yacht comprising 8 Clipper 60s and 10 Clipper 68s. The inaugural race did not feature sponsor's branding.  In 2000, The Times newspaper came on board as title sponsor with some yachts being sponsored by international cities. The last race, held in 2015-16 had yachts sponsored by international cities as well as yachts sponsored by varying organisations.

After that, we had a stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race, the 13th edition which started in Alicante, Spain and will finish in the Netherlands.

Interestingly this year, because of the water shortage in Cape Town, Blue Water, a Swedish water purification company teamed up with CONSOL Glass and provided 15000 litres of drinking water in glass bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles thus saving our precious water and also not polluting the oceans with plastic.  The world's premier offshore race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour, which started over 37 years ago as the Whitbread Round the World Race. The Volvo Ocean Race crews experience life at the extreme as they race day and night for more than 20 days at a time….

We have written in previous years about the World land speed record - the SSC Bloodhound and the attempt to reach 1000mph.  This year there were successful test runs at 200mph at Newquay airport in Cornwall, the UK. During October next year, the Bloodhound will be here in South Africa.  The plan is to test run at 500mph on the specially created track at Haksteen Pan in the Northern Cape.  This will be the first chance to use the car’s desert wheels and braking parachutes and gain an insight into the aerodynamic performance and handling…  Will we see you there?

On the art scene, the big news here is the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in the Waterfront, just a 15-minute walk from Jambo.  It is situated in converted grain silos, built in 1921 and consisting of 42 giant concrete tubes which originally stored tons of grain before being shipped around the world.

Some of the concrete tubes have been carved away to reveal an oval atrium surrounded by concrete shafts overhead, while the entire space is illuminated by natural light streaming through a glass ceiling.  Inside the bisected tubes, cylindrical lifts have been installed to transport visitors to the upper floors. From the outside, large bulging pillowed windows —  resembling diamond-shaped sails — are the building’s most noticeable feature, offering sweeping views of the city below for clients of the Silo Hotel.

When it is completed the Zeitz MOCAA will have 80 galleries spread over nine floors of which 65,000 square feet will be dedicated exhibition space. Through an entire floor dedicated to education, the museum hopes to develop a new art-loving, museum-going audience.

It is a great time to visit SA again.

South Africa: Jambo Guest House newsletter | Джамбо Гест Хаус Кейптаун

#JamboGuestHouseNews
#ДжамбоГестХаусКейптаун

Dear Friends,
Well, we made it through another exciting year and by the time you read this Jambo Guest House will have been open for 20 years!

A nice surprise was a Certificate of Excellence awarded to us by TripAdvisor for 2015 so I guess we must be doing something right! We have to commend our staff, Cathy and Mandy, who have been with us for 18 and 14 years respectively, for all their hard work performed with love, honesty and loyalty in helping us to achieve these awards. Our thanks and love go out to them.
Springtime in Cape Town and at Jambo always catches us by surprise. Although winters are mild we wake up one fine morning and suddenly everything is in bloom and the garden is filled with all sorts of wonderful flowers and scents.
This year, as always, proved to be no exception. A garden full to bursting with Clivias, of which we now have a big selection of all different shades. The blue swathe of the Petrea climbing up the side of the house and over the front gable. The Port Wine Magnolia with a scent that is almost overpowering as you walk towards the jacuzzi. The Moonflower with its’ pendulous trumpet shaped flowers giving off an amazing aroma at night.
Our beloved Wisteria pretended to have given up the ghost this year with a lot of die back. We cut out all the dead wood and the result was so sad that it sent us running to the nursery to buy a new climber. We emerged with a mystery climber (we think it is a Mandevilla) but when planting it, we found a single live shoot of the Wisteria. We are now proud to announce that it has regenerated itself and we now have two healthy climbers covering the Grove Road fence!

The Koi are now well established in the pond, have become very tame and like to be petted and will feed from your hand. We probably need to lessen their numbers now as they have grown so big but we can never decide which ones we must say goodbye to...
Cape Town this year was host city to the second leg of the Clipper round-the-World yacht race from Brazil to the Mother City. The race was started by Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and is unique in that all twelve yachts are identical and, apart from the Skipper of each, anybody can sign up and be crew - no experience necessary! It is a race split into eight legs with the start and finish in the U.K. We were privileged to have had a crew member of the yacht “IchorCoal”, sponsored by the mining company of the same name.
He stayed with us during the race stop-over in Cape Town. After leaving Cape Town for the third leg of the race, crews sailed down to 40 degrees south and could expect some of the most extreme and exhilarating sailing in the World, en-route to Australia.
Although I wrote about it last year the new Cape Town cruise line terminal is now definitely on track to becoming a reality. Plans are advanced to build it at E Berth in the Duncan Dock which is close to the Silo District of the V & A Waterfront. The plan is for the terminal to be fully operational by 2017 and includes the development of the Seitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. According to Cape Town’s Mayor, Patricia de Lille, between 2005 and 2013 there has been more than a 100% increase in the number of passenger ships visiting Cape Town and this is set to increase even more.
During this year’s Tour de France, something I follow closely, South African team MTN Qhubeka, Wild Card Entrants in their first tour, managed to wear the polka dot jersey (King of the Mountains) were second in the team competition at one time, and took thirteen top -10 finishes and best of all, won a stage. Not bad for first timers!
Qhubeka is a Nguni word meaning to carry on, move forward, to progress. Qhubeka helps people move forward and progress by donating bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results. Having a bicycle changes lives by increasing the distance people can travel, where they can go, how fast can they get there.

Thousands of young South African lives have been changed as they became the recipients of bicycles raised by donations through the Qhubeka programme.
The sponsors of the team next year are Dimension Data, the global ICT solutions and services provider. The team will be known as Team Dimension Data and will include famous Manxman Mark Cavendish, winner of 26 Tour de France stages.
The attempt to break the current world land speed record is still on track and is scheduled to take place in the Northern Cape in September next year. The Bloodhound SSC is 13m long and has been designed to travel up to 1600 km/h. It has already been tested at 1200 km/h. The car was unveiled in London in September and was also on exhibition at the Science Forum South Africa at the CSIR conference centre in Pretoria.
According to the U.K’s Telegraph, there are 25 reasons to visit South Africa right now. At the top of the list is the fact that all the major currencies, with Sterling being the highest, are at an all time high against the Rand so you can really score when you are here.

Truth Coffee Roasting coffee shop in Buitenkant street, Cape Town, has also been mentioned by The Telegraph as being the very best in the whole world.
From a list of 13 unique coffee shops and roasteries in the world, Truth's steampunk-inspired artisan coffee shop - a warehouse filled from top to bottom with metal piping and quirky, old machinery - came out on top, grinding out some of the top shops in France, Vienna, Singapore and Italy. So come and join us and we’ll go drink some coffee!
The Telegraph also mentioned the incredible landscapes, the extensive variety of very good wines, the proximity of nature, seriously good hiking, general good weather and great shopping due to the weak rand.
Telegraph travel readers also said “You really can’t overstate the case for visiting Cape Town,”. “First, there’s the in-your-face beauty of a craggy mountain range that drops precipitously into a glittering sea, its flanks carpeted in green. Then there are the pristine white beaches lapped by – if the truth be told – a chilly Atlantic, but their curves defined by giant granite boulders to bake on, and burbling mountain streams in dappled forests.”
We must not forget our wildlife around the Cape. Wild leopards can now be found in the mountains, our penguin colonies, seals, guinea fowl, mongoose, clawless otters, ostriches, resident humpbacks and southern right whales in winter and great white sharks.
This past weekend Cape Town hosted the HSBC Sevens World Series Rugby and we had to guard our parking bays as people coming to watch the tournament park in any spot, regardless of it being private property! 106000 fans attended the two day event and with the Stadium just across the road and the Waterfront a short walk away the vibe in our area was really truly great!
It is a great time to visit SA again.
