Botswana: Ker & Downey Botswana completes refurbishment of Okuti Camp

Okuti Refurbishment Launch

Ker & Downey Botswana completes refurbishment of Okuti Camp

Ker & Downey Botswana has completed the full refurbishment of Okuti accentuating its unique architecture of curved arches and doorways which pay homage to aspects of Botswana's parliament building, where the arches represent unity, strength and harmony.

Okuti Camp YouTube video:

Okuti enjoys a prime location overlooking the enormous Xakanaxa lagoon boasting uninterrupted views of the Maunachira channel. A wide variety of Okavango wildlife wander along the riverbanks in front of the camp with the Xakanaxa region remaining one of Moremi Game Reserve's best year-round wildlife hotspots.

Okuti's extensive structural renovations and innovative improvements have retained its understated luxury and rustic charm. With the interior design expertise of Maun based Lien Smith (Interior Designer) of Thakadu Treasures and Nardia Cronje (Interior Architect) of Nomvula Design, the reimagined full sorts and decor replacements assure comfort, enhance guest experience and elevate the camp to a new level of luxury.

Always forging new ways, Ker & Downey Botswana are proud that the majority of the new interiors were manufactured in Maun, thus supporting the local industry and its talented artisans.

The complete transformation of Okuti's look and feel is modern and the camp is truly a one-of-a-kind, with a design that seamlessly blends into the natural surroundings. The room's new layout and amenities have been rearranged to enhance the breathtaking views out over the lagoon and river, allowing guests to enjoy nature to the horizon from the comfort of their room. Other new room fixtures, such as the flooring and lighting, have transformed the rooms into a more stylish and brighter space.

The overall ambience exudes luxury and sophistication, ensuring that every guest enjoys a truly unforgettable experience at Okuti. We invite you to come and experience the newly refurbished camp for yourself. Whether you are a first-timer or a returning guest, we are confident that you will appreciate the improvements that have been made to this stunning camp.

Botswana: Desert & Delta Safaris' 40th anniversary

CELEBRATING 40-YEARS OF DESERT & DELTA SAFARIS – EMPOWERING BOTSWANA

Since its inception in 1982, Desert & Delta Safaris has been empowering Botswana through tourism. In 2022, Desert & Delta celebrates their 40thAnniversary, and to commemorate the incredible journey, a stunning new book documenting an impressive and remarkable history marks the occasion. Titled ‘Empowering The People of Botswana Through Tourism; Our Journey Together.’ The 132-page, full-colour, book showcases Botswana, and its people and chronicles the growth of Desert & Delta as a company, whilst maintaining their core principles and ethos.

Copies of the book will be available in the properties.

A true celebration of the history of Botswana, an inspirational story of a company with a passion for the country, which has led to the destination being widely regarded and respected as an international model of ecotourism development. A model that creates local employment and preserves the natural wilderness and wildlife while still providing valuable revenue to the country’s economy.

‘Empowering The People of Botswana Through Tourism; Our Journey Together’ is introduced by Africa’s youngest ever female minister in the Botswana government, Bogolo Kenewendo. With chapters dedicated to the rise of female trailblazers in the destination, including Desert & Delta’s very first female guide Florence Kagiso who joined Chobe Game Lodge in 2007, the company is proud to support women and 50% of the entire camp management team across all seven camps are women.

“We have so much to be proud of” comments MC Odumetse (Group Managing Director). “From launching Africa’s only all-female guiding team at Chobe Game Lodge, to becoming one of the first luxury safari circuits to be managed exclusively by local citizens.

“The stories shared in every chapter are inspiring” shares James Wilson (Marketing Director). “Every chapter will take you on a journey of how the company and the destination have evolved through the stories and experiences from generations of Desert & Delta staff. Our book aims to make everyone aware that their support in booking a trip to Botswana with us is actively helping promote responsible tourism development.” Enthuses James Wilson.

As well as reflecting on the history and growth of Desert & Delta Safaris, the book looks forward to the investment in new regions. Sedia Riverside Hotel was recently added to the group as a well-located property in the heart of Maun. In September 2021 the group purchased Nxamaseri Island Lodge to develop the incredible cultural heritage site that is Tsodilo Hills. Nxamaseri Island Lodge is in a prime location to combine both the Okavango Delta and Tsodilo Hills.

“Botswana is a world-renowned wildlife tourism destination, but we want to use our resources and network to bring awareness about some of the remarkable cultural heritage we have. Tsodilo Hills hosts over 4,000 amazingly preserved ancient rock art paintings dating back thousands of years. If a place like Tsodilo Hills was in any other country that didn’t have such a thriving safari industry, it would be one of the most popular places to visit.” Remarked Mc Odumetse.

Starting with just two camps, Camp Okavango and Camp Moremi, Desert & Delta founded one of the first luxury safari circuits in Botswana. From humble beginnings when the country was barely known, with no infrastructure or trained staff and resources, to where we are today – a world-class destination leading the way in female empowerment and run and managed by the citizens of the country, Desert & Delta Safaris has always been a company to innovate and not imitate.

This year Desert & Delta Safaris celebrates everything that has been achieved through the story of ‘Empowering The People of Botswana Through Tourism; Our Journey Together’ a visually, captivating representation of the rich, vibrant and interesting story showing how commitment to the local people, protecting the natural resources and developing on a philosophy of sustainability will ultimately lead to success.

Your trip will take you deep into the heart of our sustainable safari operation, where you’ll stay at 3 of our unique camps – Meno a Kwena, Little Sable and Mapula - and get greater insight into 5 projects we are involved in, and how they help us protect some of Africa’s last great wild places.

MENO A KWENA

PROJECT 1: ELEPHANTS FOR AFRICA (EFA)

Elephants for Africa is situated on the north western edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. This conservation project is dedicated to enhancing human-wildlife coexistence in rural farming communities, which we believe is crucial to protect both the elephant and the communities in this wildlife area. The project focuses on mitigating human-wildlife conflict primarily through community workshopping and installing elephant proof fencing.

LITTLE SABLE

PROJECT 2: WILD DOG RESEARCH CAMP

The Wild Dog Research Camp sits within the Moremi Game Reserve, on the south eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. It is the most well established research centre in the Okavango, and has conducted over 30 years of research on wild dog packs, as well as members of the large carnivore guild, the lions, leopards and spotted hyenas. While the various projects supported by this centre are dispersed across the Okavango landscape, on your visit you’ll get to meet the dedicated resident researchers who are available to take you through some of the projects and showcase the importance of applied conservation in Botswana.

PROJECT 3: KHWAI COMMUNITY / VILLAGE

The Khwai community and village is situated on the eastern edge of the Khwai Private Reserve. It is here that we dedicate a lot of time and effort to implementing multiple community outreach initiatives in and around the settlement of Khwai village. This veritably reflects our goal of continuously improving the livelihoods of communities living alongside wildlife. And like it is for us, your visit and interaction with the community, will truly be an insightful and humbling experience.

MAPULA LODGE

PROJECT 4: ELEPHANT EXPRESS

The Elephant Express project is situated on the north eastern edge of the Okavango and is a wonderful solution to a complex human-wildlife conflict issue. The project transports vulnerable members of the community – children, elderly and the disabled – to school and clinics through dangerous elephant corridors. The Elephant Express helps to minimize human-wildlife conflict by creating a space within which elephants and people can co-exist more easily.

PROJECT 5: COMMUNAL HERDING FOR LIVESTOCK & WILDLIFE PROTECTION (CLAWS)

CLAWS has been set up in the north eastern edge of the Okavango Delta to support human wildlife conflict (HWC) mitigation. This communal herding program safeguards cattle, creates employment, reduces retaliatory killing of lions, and restores overgrazed landscapes. Here you will see first-hand how by facilitating a return to traditional herding practices, whereby a herder accompanies livestock, lion-livestock interactions are reduced and the perceived conflict between lions and farmers is alleviated. This initiative combines different herds, to reduce the costs of herding per household and achieves two incredible goals: it reduces retaliatory killing of lions, and it improves the grazing land for livestock herders through rotational grazing.

Botswana: Stars of Africa's new camps

NEW COMMUNITY CONCESSION CAMPS OPEN IN BOTSWANA

Stars of Africa, a company that has a collection of safari camps, private game reserves, luxury hotels, beach retreats, and wine estates in Southern and Eastern Africa, has opened two exciting new camps in Botswana.

The first of these is the exciting African Excursions Guest House, which is in the Khwai Community Concession in the northeast of the Okavango Delta, adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. The second is Mogogelo Camp, which is in a private, game-rich concession area on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta.

African Excursion Guest House offers comfortable accommodation in 7 classic thatched chalets with glass sliding doors, twin or double rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and a small deck area overlooking the garden. It offers a family-friendly way to explore the delta in one of Botswana’s most active wildlife areas.

Mogogelo offers 10 classic canvas suites, raised on wooden decks and with en-suite bathrooms and private decks. All have a view of the waterhole and the wildlife that visit it. Facilities at the camp include a thatched dining area with a bar, an outdoor lounge, a swimming pool, and a traditional fire pit looking toward the waterhole.

Both are easily reached from Maun which makes them convenient for any itinerary but also allows for self-drive use. Being in locally-owned concessions means that fees paid, go directly into benefiting the indigenous communities with facilities such as schools and clinics as decided by a community trust as well as providing employment.

There is a varied range of activities available within both camps' private concessions; day and night game drives, walking safaris with local guides, and mokoro (traditional canoe) rides dependent on seasonal water levels. African Excursion also offers full-day trips into the neighboring Moremi Game Reserve.

Desert & Delta Safaris: Top 10 Reasons To Visit Botswana

TOP 10 REASONS WHY BOTSWANA – WITH US – IS THE ULTIMATE POST-PANDEMIC TRAVEL DESTINATION

The global vaccine rollout is helping boost consumer confidence. Airline schedules around the world are ramping up and the road to recovery has begun in earnest.

We’ve heard of new terms like “Revenge Travel” pop up. The idea that after over a year in lockdown there is a massive pent up demand for international travel and rather than postponing, people are opting for that dream destination they always wanted to visit…now! Spending more and making up for lost vacation time.

Either way, we believe a boom is inevitable and are already seeing more and more guests arrive by the day. Travellers are sensible in their decision making and we believe Botswana should be considered as one of the best places for a post-pandemic travel destination.

In choosing where to go abroad, guests will want safe destinations where they will spend plenty of time in the outdoors, reconnect with nature and be away from people as much as possible. Botswana is all that – and more!

We’ve put together a guide to help you understand why coming on a trip with Desert & Delta Safaris is the best travel choice.

#1 SAFETY FIRST  – EXTREMELY HIGH STANDARD OF HYGIENE & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Botswana is considered one of the world’s most exclusive international travel destinations. Attracting travellers from around the world to enjoy the highest standard of accommodation, service and of course safari experience.

We’ve ensured that our COVID safety protocols go above and beyond the expected standards for our international visitors.

Not only are the camps ensuring that hygiene standards are at the absolute maximum but travelling in Botswana is a safe way to minimize exposure. The camps and lodges we operate are effectively COVID free bubbles with all staff tested before arriving into camp and movement in and out of camp can only happen with negative test results.

Every international traveller arriving into Botswana needs to present a negative PCR test valid no more than 72 hours from time of test and as an extra precaution the airports of Maun and Kasane (the main gateways to the safari regions) perform a complimentary RAPID Antigen test on arrival at the airport.

#2 BOTSWANA IS CONSIDERED ONE OF AFRICA’S MOST EXCLUSIVE, UNCROWDED SAFARI DESTINATIONS IN AFRICA

National parks, game-reserves and private concessions are all stringently controlled so you can expect to enjoy huge, remote wilderness areas with minimal numbers of other travellers. Try a stay at the private Xugana Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta with thousands of hectares of islands, waterways and open floodplains to explore with a maximum of 16-guests.

#3 NATURAL SOCIAL DISTANCING WHILE ON SAFARI

All our safari activities are already designed to maximise space and privacy. Every game drive vehicle is designed with a guaranteed window seat with ample space, both for photographic purposes and social distancing. All boat activities will ensure the middle seat remains unoccupied. Mokoro activities are designed for a maximum of two-guests at a time or if you’re travelling as a single, just you. While on a walking safari at Camp Okavango or Xugana Island Lodge, each group is split into maximum six guests and you’ll have all the space you will ever need.

#4 WORK WITH OPERATORS WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD & ESTABLISHED OPERATION IN THE COUNTRY

Desert & Delta Safaris is the longest standing luxury safari group in Botswana. We’ve been through it all over the years and will come out of every crises wiser and stronger.

Our style of doing business over the years is what has kept us going all this time. You will be looked after like a part of our family from the moment you join us.

#5 ALL YOUR SAFARI PLANS UNDER ONE SOLID OPERATOR

Keep your logistics simple. By working with an operator like us you can keep your whole safari under one company. We have our own charter flight company called Safari Air and own eight different safari lodges around the country. From the Chobe River, home to the highest concentration of elephants, to the renowned Moremi Game Reserve, islands in Okavango Delta and the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Desert & Delta Safaris covers all the key-ecosystems in Botswana.

#6 THE BEST ADVENTURES IN REMOTE AFRICA AWAIT YOU IN BOTSWANA

During the lockdown we’ve refined two of our most epic sleep-out experiences to appeal to the post-pandemic traveller. We know the lockdown has increased our desire to reconnect with the true remote wilds of the world. Our sleep-out experience on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans does just that. A maximum of six-people and your specialist guide will venture out into the middle of the world’s largest salt flats to sleep under the stars. Something our guests have called life-changing!

Or if you want a more luxurious adventure try our romantic sleep-out deck at Camp Okavango. Just you and your loved one under the vast Botswana sky on a raised deck, with a large double bed, on a private corner of the island.

#7 CONTINGENCY PLANS IN PLACE FOR THE NW WAY OF TRAVEL

We know there is a certain amount of apprehension with travelling post-pandemic but rest-assured we have considered every eventuality and have a contingency plan for everything. We also have a strong relationship with the government, local authorities and our partners in providing COVID tests. We’ve got it covered.

We want you to feel completely relaxed while knowing all the ground arrangements are taken care of.

#8 A BUMPER YEAR FOR WILDLIFE & SAFARI THIS 2021

Rains were phenomenal in the season earlier this year. Around double the average in some places. This means that those looking to enjoy the water activities in the Chobe & Okavango will be treated to brimming levels of water and outstanding scenery. Perfect on the lush floodplains in a traditional mokoro (canoe).

Generous rainfall results in more grasses, more birds and herbivores and of course with the plethora of life comes an increase in predator activity.

So this year promises to be a remarkable Botswana safari year!

#9 RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL IS AT THE HEART OF THE DESTINATION

The pandemic has made us realise we need to be responsible in the way we travel. Too many destinations have become overcrowded and unsustainable. Botswana, on the other hand, has had a strict low-volume and high-revenue model since independence in the late 60’s. Putting conservation at the heart of the way we run our business.

It’s also critical that responsible tourism empowers the citizens of Africa as well as protect the wildlife. At Desert & Delta Safaris empowerment of the local community is the pillar of our success. One of the first premier safari circuits in the country to be full run and managed by Botswana citizens.

We’ve retained and supported all our staff throughout the pandemic.

Your safari with us goes a really long way in making a lasting positive impact on the people and protection of the environment.

#10 CHOOSE THE PERFECT DESTINATION – NOT THE BEST DEAL

At Desert & Delta Safaris we are proud of our exceptional value. Offering a world-class safari in Botswana for an affordable rate. Coming to our country will leave you feeling enriched and energised. Pure, unadulterated African wilderness delivered at a time, after a year of lockdown, when you need that connection to nature again!
