Zambezi Mubala Lodge opens soon

A new Gondwana Collection lodge located in the Zambezi Region, will open in November. The Zambezi Mubala Lodge is a paradise for nature and fishing enthusiasts and a must for all bird lovers. Atmospheric boat trips during sunset allow you to dive into the colourful water and animal world of the Zambezi. A healthy filling for every photographer.
Gondwana Collection's Brand and Marketing Director, Mannfred Goldbeck, is convinced that the name of the new lodge is exactly what it promises: "Mubala means 'colour' in local Silozi language. We are convinced that the harmonious colours of nature and its reflections on the water of the Zambezi will be a unique and memorable holiday experience."
The Zambezi Mubala Lodge is currently being rebuilt on the site of what used to be Kalizo Lodge, and accommodation can be booked as from 1 November 2017. Eighteen spacious double chalets and two family chalets, all en suite and air conditioned, offer breath-taking views of the river landscape, inviting you to linger. There are also six tented chalets with en-suite bathrooms.
Here, our guests will find a temporary home but it is also home to the colourful, cheerfully fluttering Carmine Bee-eaters. The colony on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River is one of the largest in southern Africa.
The Zambezi Mubala Lodge is located 40km east of Katima Mulilo on the Namibian riverbank of the Zambezi, overlooking Zambia - in the heart of untouched nature. Day trips to the famous Victoria Falls, the Chobe National Park and other national parks in the region are not to be missed.

Kalahari Farmhouse to be open to guests as of the end of April.

The eleven rooms for the Kalahari Farmhouse are available in chalets reminiscent of the Cape Dutch style. Kalahari Farmhouse and the Self-Sufficiency Centre are supplied by the Stampriet Aquifer. It is one of Namibia's largest and most important aquifers and lies underneath the Kalahari dunes like a huge water reservoir.

The Gondwana Academy used to be a mobile training program. It is now situated at the Kalahari Farmhouse.

The Kalahari Farmhouse in Stampriet will be closed for renovations and the Gondwana Training Academy the first four months of 2017 as of 1 January. It will open to guests as soon as 28 April 2017. Originally the Kalahari Farmhouse was to be used for the Gondwana Academy as from January until July 2017. However, this year's training program has been streamlined for various reasons. Gondwana's current Managing Director Mannfred Goldbeck, soon to be the Director of Brand and Marketing, will head the Academy.

The Tourism Industry is currently experiencing a boom and the prospects for the coming year look promising. Therefore Gondwana can make use of the eleven rooms at Kalahari Farmhouse once the Academy courses have concluded at the end of April 2017. The rooms have already been released for bookings.

Located on the fringes of the village of Stampriet in the valley of the seasonal Auob River, Kalahari Farmhouse combines upmarket hospitality with a rural ambience. The reception and restaurant are housed in a farmhouse, built decades ago in the. The small farming business next-door keeps the kitchen stocked with fresh produce for the delicious dishes on the menu. Kalahari Farmhouse is ideally suited for a short holiday with the whole family.

When the Kalahari Farmhouse is not open to guests, it will serve as the home of the Gondwana Academy. The lodge group’s hospitality training and leadership development programme aims to provide service excellence, promoting Namibia as a top African tourist destination.

While the Academy is initially aimed at increasing the skills of Gondwana staff, the intention is to also provide training for people aspiring to work in the hospitality industry and to be a source of leadership development for service professionals wanting to further their skills.

Air-conditioned rooms at Namushasha River Lodge
 
Lights on for 24 hours: Namushasha River Lodge has been connected to the national power grid.

The main switch is pushed up. At last, on 27 January, Namushasha River Lodge is connected to the national power grid. Everybody is tremendously pleased. “There was no time to celebrate, though”, says Reini Hoppe, the technical manager of the Gondwana Group. “We had to test the air conditioners in each of the 27 rooms.” Since that memorable day our guests sleep in pleasantly chilled rooms, and they can switch on the light in the middle of the night.

Previously that could not be taken for granted. Three diesel generators were operated 18 hours per day to supply Namushasha River Lodge with electricity. After Gondwana acquired the lodge in June 2012, various environmentally friendly alternatives to the generators were considered. The noise and CO2 emissions certainly weren’t compatible with the lodge’s concept of sustainable management. Furthermore, the diesel generators were expensive to run. The costs for fuel and maintenance was in the region of N$980,000 per year.

In the past years the Zambezi region has seen a huge investment in rural electrification through state entities and this roll-out continues. Towards the end of 2014 the power line was extended from Kongola southwards to Ngonga Primary School. This school is about 6 km away from the lodge. With the national grid spreading to Zambezi, the use of power from the national grid provides a cost-effective source of energy that has a range of social and financial benefits. After extensive consultations with representatives of the Mashi conservancy and the surrounding communities Gondwana has now replaced the use of generators with a 33 kV line from Ngonga Primary School to Namushasha River Lodge. The managers of Namushasha River Lodge, Kati and Stephan Klein, had a decisive part in this.

“Being connected to the grid improves the service to our guests”, Kati explains. “In particular we have those guests in mind who use respirators at night or need to store medicines in a fridge. All that is now possible as a matter of course.” And Stefan adds: “Now we can equip the camping site with motion sensors so that our campers needn’t worry that they might bump into an elephant if they go to the toilet at night.”

Gondwana has invested more than a million Namibia Dollars to get connected to the national grid. The nearby Namushasha Cultural Centre, which is managed by the Mashi community, also benefits from the connection.

Feel closer - at the new Kalahari Anib Lodge

Something old, something new: The beautiful courtyard at the Kalahari Anib Lodge will be left as is.

Kalahari Anib Lodge will be undergoing a rigorous three-month facelift early next year. Following the rebranding in 2014, the ‘Feel Closer’ theme will now be implemented to enhance the Kalahari experience of our guests. The lodge will close for alterations and extensive renovations on 4 January 2016 and reopen on 1 April.

“We trust that our partners will understand,” says Miriam Schmidt, the marketing manager of the Gondwana Collection. “Renovations have to be carried out at all the lodges at regular intervals in order to maintain the quality of the product. Alterations at Kalahari Anib Lodge will be so extensive that we decided to close for three months rather than expect guests to put up with the disturbances of construction work in progress.”

The freestanding chalets of the lodge complex will be converted into 22 comfort rooms including family units with fantastic views of the savannah. The 30 standard rooms around the courtyard will be thoroughly upgraded.

"On the whole we will bring more nature into the lodge”, says the architect in charge, Sven-Erik Staby. “The access road to the lodge will be shifted and lead through more enticing scenery in future. Walkways will be constructed behind the chalets so that guests can enjoy uninterrupted vistas of the savannah. And the new restaurant and large terrace will offer wonderful views of the waterhole to the east.” 

Kalahari Anib Lodge will reopen on 1 April 2016. Our guests can look forward to a spacious new main building which will house the reception, a souvenir shop, a bar and a restaurant with a terrace of generous proportions.
