Namibia: Profiling Luderitz - harbour town in southern Africa

Profiling Luderitz, Namibia

Lüderitz is a town located in the ǁKaras Region of southern Namibia. It is situated on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its German colonial architecture, fishing industry, and proximity to the Namib Desert.

Here are some key points about Lüderitz:

1. History: The town was founded in 1883 when Heinrich Vogelsang purchased Angra Pequena and some land from the local Nama chief. It was named after Adolf Lüderitz, a German merchant and colonialist. Lüderitz became an important trading port and the center of diamond mining in the early 20th century.

2. Architecture: Lüderitz is known for its well-preserved German colonial architecture, with colorful buildings lining its streets. The most famous building is the Goerke Haus, a grand mansion built in 1910 that now houses a museum.

3. Economy: The economy of Lüderitz is largely based on fishing, diamond mining and tourism. The town is a major fishing port, and the surrounding waters are rich in marine life. Tourism is also an important industry, with visitors attracted to the town's historical sites and the nearby Namib Desert.

4. Attractions: Lüderitz offers several attractions for visitors, including Shark Island, a popular camping and picnic spot with views of the ocean; the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a former diamond mining town abandoned in the 1950s; and the nearby Bogenfels rock arch, a natural landmark on the coast.

5. Climate: Lüderitz has a cool desert climate, with mild temperatures throughout the year due to the influence of the cold Benguela Current. Fog is common in the mornings, providing moisture to the region's plant and animal life.

Namibia: Luderitz annual crayfish festival is on

Namibia's Luderitz annual crayfish festival boosts economic growth

The annual crayfish festival held in the southern coastal town of Luderitz provides an investment opportunity and boosts tourism, which in turn contributes significantly to the country's economic growth.

YouTube video - Luderitz:

The festival has a hugely positive impact on the local Luderitz community and it has ignited an entrepreneurial spirit in the town.

The inclusion of small and medium enterprises and financial services in the festival demonstrates its impact on social and economic progress. The festival also takes place against the backdrop of oil discoveries and emerging green industries that will drive economic development nationwide.

Fishing is an important economic activity for Luderitz, which is poised to become the new epicenter of the oil, gas, and green hydrogen industries.

The festival, which started in 2008, has become a popular platform to showcase Luderitz's rich cultural heritage and traditions. It offers a variety of activities, including seafood exhibitions, traditional cuisine, entertainment, fashion, and corporate events.

This year's festival runs from April 29 to May 5 and themed "Riding the waves toward a sustainable future".

Namibia: Swakopmund Platz am Meer shopping center & fishing video

Platz am Meer Swakopmund shopping center is a landmark on the coastline of Namibia offering quality restaurants, luxury seafront apartments, banks and a selected variety of food and fashion retailers.

This new development is designed in harmony with the environment and offers luxury apartments and penthouses all linked to fashionable shopping with beachfront views, green walkways and child-friendly play areas.

Elegance and comfort, taken to new heights by the beauty of the Namibian coastline, is what makes Platz am Meer development the place to be.

YouTube video:

Sustainability features

Shopping Centres normally have large roofed areas making them ideal for photovoltaic electricity generation.

We are retro-fitting all our Centres with solar power systems. In Swakopmund, with its high electricity

price from the grid, this was an even more sensible option. All apartments and restaurants have access to or are supplied with natural gas, which is a cleaner fossil fuel than the diesel used to generate electricity in Walvis Bay.

The Shopping Centre’s walkways are naturally ventilated with the airflow controlled by the opening and closing of clerestory windows according to the need of the day. Natural light is as important in managing the electrical demand, so great care was given in flooding the mall with natural light from all sides.

Only high quality materials and suitable techniques for this unique environment were used in its construction. With the Sulphur rich mist in Swakopmund causing aggressive and corrosive conditions,

innovative installations were crucial. Imported self-adhesive roof tiles, with no metal were used. Such

finishes will enhance the lifespan of the building and simultaneously reduce the need for costly maintenance works and frequent improvements.

Some interesting facts about Platz am Meer:

• First two escalators for Swakopmund/Erongo area of Namibia

• First Dis-Chem and Checkers outlets in Erongo area

• ± 920 000 man hours of construction work

• Rock placed for breakwater: 135 000 tons

• Concrete placed: 15 866m³ (2 644 truckloads of 6m³ each – 13km queue of trucks)

• Bricks used: 2 764 951 (923 truckloads, a 5,5km queue of trucks)

• Form work: 100 579m² (16 rugby fields)

• Brick force: 70km used

• Reinforcing bar (Rebar) used: 1 129 tons

• Bags of cement: 135 565 bags/6 780 tons (226 truckloads of 30 tons each, a 2,48km queue of trucks)

• Plaster: 43 139m² (7 rugby fields)

Platz am Meer is a Namibian landmark that the local community can be proud of, granting opportunities, employment and business initiatives that should be claimed and cultivated for the better of the people.

We are confident that the Waterfront will become a popular destination, not only attracting the community of Swakopmund to its diverse amenities and activities, but also be a destination of choice for those from other towns along the coast.

Platz Am Meer accommodates 72 shops.

Entertainment on offer:

Permanent kids playing area
Promenade with Restaurants and Fast food outlets

South Africa: Hout Bay town and harbour aerial video excursion | Хаут Бэй аэровидео Южная Африка

Video, including aerial, of Cape Town's picturesque suburb with its beach and harbour, a bonus is aerial video of whale swimming in Atlantic Ocean, Western Cape, South Africa.

#HoutBayAerialVideo #CapeTownSouthAfrica #WesternCapeHarbour

Hout Bay view from Chapman's Peak

YouTube video of Hout Bay town and harbour:
Hout Bay (Afrikaans: Houtbaai or "Wood Bay") is a seaside suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is situated in a valley on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula, twenty kilometres south of the Central Business District. The name "Hout Bay" can refer to the suburb, the bay on which it is situated or the entire valley. The area was originally made up of two farms, which were slowly subdivided to make way for urban expansion. While still maintaining its rural atmosphere, the area of Hout Bay has more than 5,960 residences inhabited by a population of at least 17,900 people (as of 2011).
Dutch colony When the Dutch established a colony in Table Bay in 1652, a great quantity of good timber was required for construction, shipbuilding and other purposes. There was no large forest in the immediate vicinity of the settlement, mainly because the rainfall was not high enough. It was soon apparent that the colonists would be able to fell wood they needed in the wetter valley that lay on the other side of a low pass (now Constantia Nek) between the southern end of Table Mountain and Constantiaberg. Van Riebeeck described the forest of Hout Bay as being the finest in the world. It was Van Riebeeck who gave Hout Bay its present name. In 1652 on 22 November Van Riebeeck wrote in his journal about T’ Houtbaaitjen. Since then it has been known as Hout Bay.
Hout Bay's bronze leopard
In 1662, the year when Jan Van Riebeeck left the Cape, the Boscheuwel road was extended from Kirstenbosch in a rough track over Constantia Nek to Hout Bay. In 1668 the first permit to cut and saw wood in the Hout Bay forest was granted. In 1677 the first agreement to rent land for farming purposes was signed. In 1681 two farms were established Ruyteplatts and Kronendal. Forts In 1781 the French-built three forts at Hout Bay. These were part of a line of forts known as the French lines that were built in order to protect the Cape from falling into the hands of the English. The west fort at the harbour dates from this time. In the latter half of the 19th Century the farms Moddergat, Nooitgedacht, Oakhurst and Uitkyk were established.
East Fort battery
Manganese mine In 1873, manganese was discovered in the Constantiaberg. In 1909 to 1911 manganese was mined in Hout Bay. Reminders of these activities are the ruins of the manganese ore jetty and the old mine workings up the mountain. In 1880, Crisp Arnold set up fishing sheds and started curing snoek for export to Mauritius.
In 1895 Walter Gurney built the first church in Hout Bay. It still stands today and is known as St Peter's the Fisherman. The first school in Hout Bay was started in this church. Morrow - Factory Boat
In 1904 Hout Bay's first crayfish canning factory was established in the wreck of an old sailing ship, The R Morrow that stood where the present South African Sea Products factory is today. For almost 10 years the factory operated successfully exporting canned crayfish overseas and providing work for the local inhabitants. On 31 July 1914 a leak in the acetylene gas supply caused an explosion which blew up the canning factory, killing 7 people including the owner Mr. Lucien Plessis.
Chapman's Peak In 1922 Chapman's Peak Drive was opened to the public. It had been built by the provincial administration using convict labour. It had taken 7 years to build and had cost (R40 000).
Fishing industry German immigrant and farmer, Jacob Trautmann, established the first fishing village here in 1867. The fishing industry expanded substantially in the 1930s when fish became a popular item on menus and improved facilities for transporting fish inland were created. The Trautmann family improved their fishing boats and built more sheds on the beach for processing the fish. They owned Trans Africa Fisheries.
