Botswana: Thamo Telele Lodge & World Giraffe Day

Natural Selection

IT'S WORLD GIRAFFE DAY AND WE'RE CELEBRATING AT THAMO TELELE!

That's because our new Botswana lodge, Thamo Telele, is ALL about giraffe. Perfectly situated in a 250-hectare private game reserve within the “village” of Maun on the outskirts of the Okavango Delta, Thamo Telele (meaning “tall neck”) harbors a large variety of game but is known for its successfully breeding herd of giraffe. In fact, the newest member of the herd, aptly named Telele, was born during the refurb of the lodge at the end of 2021.

At Thamo Telele, our focus is on giraffe education & research.

The giraffe at Thamo Telele have all been brought here from hunting areas over the last decade and have done exceptionally well in this safe haven. It is an idyllic spot to hang out with giraffe that are approachable on horseback and relaxed near the hide, while learning about giraffe conservation. The program is led by our rather brilliant giraffe scientists Katie and Emma, who joined Natural Selection from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) in Namibia. GCF are our conservation partners at Hoanib Valley Camp, Namibia and more importantly, are the foremost experts on giraffe. They are the only organization in the world focused entirely on the conservation and management of all giraffe species in the wild. In fact, they established and launched World Giraffe Day!

A portion of each guest’s stay supports Giraffe DNA Research through GCF… which helps governments make informed decisions about giraffe population management and conservation. The advancement of DNA sequencing has enabled GCF and fellow researchers to differentiate between the populations of giraffe across Africa, finding that there are in fact 4 separate species. In addition to enabling this work to expand into Botswana, our long-term vision at Thamo Telele is to set up a Giraffe Education Centre to provide an impactful conservation experience for both tourists and locals that also informs visitors about the plight of giraffe across Africa.

So today, being World Giraffe Day, we couldn’t be prouder to tell you about the work we are undertaking and planning at Thamo Telele, and how through our giraffe experience, guests can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for giraffe conservation and why it is so important to protect these magnificent creatures.

Namibia: new Huab Lodge | Хуаб Лодж Намибия

New Year, New Huab Lodge!

After a hiatus of nearly two years, Huab Lodge has re-opened its doors to welcome tourists!

The new owners, Deon and Lidia Brummer, come to Huab Lodge from a conservation background and are very proud to take the lodge into this next era, building on the foundation that Jan and Suzi van der Reep laid.

Huab Lodge was originally founded in 1992 to help generate funds for the conservation of the desert-adapted elephants that roam this remote stretch of Damaraland, and conservation remains central to the Huab Lodge ethos.

Huab Lodge is situated at the end of a 35 km cul de sac, so it is the ideal place to stop over for a few nights, explore the ephemeral Huab and Aba-Huab Rivers in search of the desert adapted elephants and experience 'The Huab Sound of Silence'.

The main area:

The unique main building blends well into its surroundings, with the irregular thatch roof mirroring the mountain range on the southern banks of the river. Open on all sides, you are offered striking views of the swimming pool, and along the river valley. The reception area has been moved to a newly built area next to the main lapa.

In keeping with the ambiance at Huab, meals are enjoyed at a family table.

The chalets:

The 8 chalets are all situated along the northern banks of the Huab River, offering magnificent views down the valley.

Each chalet has a large private patio and is tastefully furnished with two extra-long double beds. Large windows and sliding doors allow in both light and a view across the Huab. There is in fact no need to even close the curtains – rather watch the stars and listen to the calls of owls and barking geckos as you drift off to sleep.

The Activities:

Thermal Spring: At Huab Lodge you can enjoy the soothing benefits of the natural thermal spring which bubbles up out of the ground at about 60 degrees Celsius but is maintained in the ‘bath’ at between 37 and 40 degrees.

Ephemeral River Drive: This full day activity starts with a quick 7am coffee before departing in the direction of the ephemeral Huab River

With fences having, for the most part, been removed in the Damaraland area, the desert-adapted elephant are free to roam the entire area and the morning will be spent exploring both the Huab and Aba-Huab rivers, in search of these magnificent behemoths.

Early Morning Walk: Offered either before or after breakfast,  the best time to do these walks is before the sun reaches its zenith as, even in winter, temperatures can rise to 30 degrees during the day and most animals prefer to find shelter during that time of the day.  Longer walking routes for the fitter, or more adventurous guest, can be offered though.

Scenic and/or Sundowner Drive: A drive is offered in a game viewer vehicle, departing the lodge after breakfast to explore the nature reserve and the beauty of the morning.

Another drive is offered in the late afternoon, taking in the magnificent Namibian sunset, along, of course, with the obligatory sundowner!

Namibia: Kaokoland - The lonely Stone Men | Одинокие каменные люди Каоколенда в Намибии

Kaokoland - The lonely Stone Men

Kaokoland, also known as the Kunene Region, is spectacularly remote - it is a vast expanse of rough semi-desert, hidden in the extreme northwest of Namibia, between the empty, wind-blown skeleton coast and the little-explored wilderness in southwestern Angola. If you like extreme terrain, hidden valleys, and rare, exotic culture, Kaokoland is the place to be. The wildlife in this dry and unforgiving place includes desert-adapted elephants, rhinos, and occasionally lions and antelopes.

Kaokoland, also known as Kaokoveld, is a popular destination for hardcore travelers and explorers. It appeals to those who have already traveled through the country's main asphalt arteries, and for self-sufficient and experienced 4x4 travelers who venture further afield, it is a desert Eden full of secrets and wonders.

One of these secrets is the Lone Men of Namibia. These stone men - or rather sculptures - are scattered across the country. The sculptures are life-size, made from rock that predominates in the area. Each sculpture shows a different character. Some stand, others sit, others kneel with their hands in the air, and one clings to an overhang for love of life. An aluminum disc is attached to each figure, with a number and a message indicating where it is "op pad" to.

Although a sculpture with the number 37 was sighted, only 14 lone men have been found so far. They have been spotted in Purros in the south, Van Zyl Pass in the east, Otjinungua in the north, and even in the Skeleton Coast National Park in the west. The nameless artist managed to secretly construct these stone figures in Namibia's long-forgotten landscape. It has become an open-air gallery that draws the viewer into the ambiance and feelings of each sculpture. For many travelers, the search for these lonely men has become a treasure hunt.

Nobody knows who the artist is, the locations, how many sculptures there really are, or what story is behind this art. The strangeness is the beauty of everything, the unknown is wrapped in the mystery.
