Namibia archives: Hobas Lodge closure in 2019

Ongoma Drum Cafe Namibia

The Drum Cafe Philosophy

Testimonials by happy clients

Smiling faces at every drumming session - We bring joy wherever we go!

It's that time of the year where you've got to think about giving back to your employees. At the same time you are looking at motivating and uniting your work force behind one common goal. You need something to uplift spirits, right?
Look no further, because we are here to surpise you with a truly positive and inspirational show!

Be it corporate entertainment or one of our interactive group music sessions, Drum Cafe Namibia Windhoek has the answer.

Each event is built on a similar philosophy of team building, but is fun and effective in a unique way.

Never thought a group of engineers can make music? Think again!

This is our philosophy at Drum Cafe Namibia:

Well run companies can be compared to making music in a drum circle. We have two main principles about making successful music:
Everyone plays the same Bass
We have to listen to each other

If we can get the group to follow these two principles, as a group
We are able to build a community, ie more than just working together
A community that is non-competitive
A community that realizes that we are all here for the same reason
Each person, no matter how small their part is, has an integral role and contribution to our community. (When you play an instrument, even something as small as a triangle, your brain interprets that you are making the whole music)
We can make music

At Drum Cafe events participants are seated in a circle as a circle represents no hierarchy - every one is on the same level and it allows barriers to be broken.

Group drumming is a powerful team building method, because the effect is immediate and is felt by everyone. The individual has to be aware of his/her neighbours and has a direct effect on the group.

One is carried by the group’s rhythm. This creates a sense of trust and safety. The sustained repetition of the beat draws you in, relaxing and mesmerizing.

You feel your contribution is what is making up the group's music, you are part of an orchestra, a team.

This unifying experience sets the tone for the truly powerful analogy between a drumming orchestra and a team.

A drum circle gives the participants the euphoria that THEIR ROLL is an integral part of the company, no matter where they are.

Group drumming is a powerful team building method, because the effect is immediate and felt by everyone.

"We’ve done a couple of team activities in the past but I can honestly say that the drum playing was one of the biggest hits so far."

Adjani Plichta, Payroll Consultant, CR VAN WYK & COMPANY

"The Drum Cafe comes highly recommended for any event - it helped us to get a powerful leadership message through and also helped participants to internalize the learning of the day."

Trudi van Rooyen, General Manager: Human Resources, MANICA GROUP NAMIBIA for BIDVEST NAMIBIA

"I was very sceptical at first but before I knew the vibes of the drum beats and the atmosphere took over and it was enjoyment pure. Thank you for the unforgettable experience!"

Namibia: News from Midgard Lodge

News from Midgard Lodge

Midgard Taste Festival

The first Midgard Taste Festival was a huge success and exceeded all expectations. A multitude of guests travelled from afar to experience this unique sensory experience.  The location with its beautiful scenery, tantalizing food and multiple, talented music acts did not disappoint.
The day started off with an unforgettable rugby match. The comradery between all fellow rugby supporters was not only felt, but visible to all in the Jameson man-cave. Everyone was cheering on their favourite team, the “bokke”, and the fans could be heard way into to Namibian bush.
Local artists, including Ray, Diolini and Chris B ensured that the spirit stayed at an all time high with their exceptional musical performances. After the rugby victory, many enjoyed a refreshing dip in the crystal clear blue swimming pools, indulged in champagne and a variety of wine tasting.
As lunch hour struck,  guests got together in the food court to enjoy a huge variety of delicacies, including vegan wraps, infused popsicles, kebabs and an assortment of traditional Namibian dishes, to name but a few.
The highlight of the festival was the amazing performance given by the popular band Freshly Ground,  whose performance saw their fans dancing into the sunset as the evening vibe began.
After all enjoyed a fantastic day at the Midgard Taste Festival, the comfortable accommodation was calling.  A good nights rest in either the beautiful rooms, trains or tents were made available.
Breakfast was a scrumptious affair and was presented in the unique setting of the newly launched train accommodation area.  The last couple of hours was enjoyed in this beautiful, tranquil setting before the guests had to say “good bye” and head home.

We look forward to hosting this event again in 2020!  Date to be confirmed as soon as possible.

Namibia: O&L Leisure Group today

O&L LEISURE TODAY

A Christmas message from Managing Director, Norbert Wurm

It is with a sense of accomplishment that I can share that the O&L Leisure Group has done quite well during 2019, whereby we continue to show healthy growth and find opportunities in a challenging market. This success is wholly attributable to our people, who are continuing to create memorable and unique experiences that our guests love. Our iconic properties look amazing and plans are in the pipeline to further enhance these at every opportunity (watch this space) as we strive to be a catalyst for positive change creating new realities and fulfilling dreams:

Midgard added the very unique accommodation in the new “Train section”. The Midgard Train complex is conveniently located in the MCE gardens and within a short walking distance of the main lodge where the hotel’s dining room, bar, lounge, TV Room, boma and various outdoor terraces, pools, etc. are located. This unique facility is made up of three stationary passenger train carriages. These three carriages share two separate male and female ablution blocks. The facility also includes 3 basic kitchens and separate dining room. In the garden courtyard area is an open boma fire pit and a wood burning barbecue area.
We successfully hosted the Taste event at Midgard and were overwhelmed how well the event was accepted and attended by all, which has emboldened us to immediately start working on the next set of exciting events.

Chobe Water Villas welcomed a new GM couple in 2019. They bring with them new innovative ideas, many years of experience and a passion for nature. New boats and offerings are in the pipeline.
Mokuti is excelling and Ivan, the GM, is doing a tremendous job.  Little extra touches in the rooms are creating a stir. New cocktail menus and other ideas, including exciting night games drives with experienced rangers are either implemented already or will be in the very near future.
The Strand Hotel has revamped the Brewer and Butcher and it looks “wow”. The menus are constantly being reviewed at all 3 restaurants as to tantalise guests to come back for more, especially over the busy Christmas period. The new beer garden, with its charm and tradition, is perfectly suited for corporate functions and bigger groups.

Our properties have featured prominently on television and other media with each and every journalist loving the charm, the facilities, activities and great cuisine that we offer our guests. We must never forget that it is people, especially our staff at O&L Leisure, that make our business the success that it is.  At O&L Leisure we believe that investment in our staff gives the best return on investment and one can clearly see that our family is a happy one. Training, career opportunities, expansion and so much more are constantly addressed as to make this family smile. We thank each and every one of you that has worked so hard to make this year great.
We plan to excite and entice our guests with new offerings for the year 2020.
As we look back and reflect upon the past year, with all our achievements and successes, we would like to show our appreciation for your support and continued loyalty during 2019. As we embark on this journey with you into 2020, we will embrace a future of continuous innovation to deliver new realities and fulfill dreams. You have been an integral part of shaping our business and for that we sincerely thank you. We wish you a very merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to connecting with you in the New Year – All the best for 2020.

South Africa: Termination of Unabridged Birth Certificates

Termination of Unabridged Birth Certificates gives SA tourism a boost

Exciting news: The end of the Unabridged Birth Certificate (UBC) is in clear sight.
Derailing South Africa’s inbound tourism since 2015 the termination of the UBC has been a welcome reprieve for travellers as well for South Africa’s tourism sector.

As per a new travel advisory circulated in early November, international minors travelling to South Africa with their parents will now only need a valid passport to enter the country with the previously required Unabridged Birth Certificate in the process of being waived.
