Botswana: water levels in our Okavango Camps

Update on water levels in our Okavango Camps

This summer, while extremely beautiful in Botswana, has been very hot and dry. The rains have been well below average and unfortunately Angola has also had disappointing precipitation. As a result, the annual inundation of flood water has yet to show itself in the Okavango Delta.

Our properties in the Okavango: Delta Camp, Oddballs’ and Oddballs’ Enclave are still dry. The Boro River channel has not yet filled and only very short mokoro activities are being offered to cross the channel in certain places where you cannot walk. Water is expected any day, but as with every year, we cannot predict exactly when it will arrive. It is safe to say that that the flood is late this year and it could easily be another 6-8 weeks before proper mokoro activities, as we are accustomed, are being offered.

What we can say is that as a result of the scarceness of water sources, the game is exceptional. Guests are regularly seeing lion, hyena, leopard and even cheetah. Wild dogs have been seen along with herds of over 1000 buffalo. Naturally all of the grazers are there sipping from the waters edge and eating the grasses in the molapo. It is a veritable Eden.

We understand that missing mokoro activities can be disappointing to guests and we don’t want to disappoint. Please prepare your guests so that their expectations are met when they arrive. The experience of visiting the Okavango is entirely predicated on being in true nature. True nature is unpredictable and variations occur each and every month and year in the Okavango Delta. This year water will be scarce, but game will be plenty.

Opening of Sossusvlei Desert Lodge | Соссусвлей Дезерт Лодж Намибия

#AndBeyond #SossusvleiDesertLodge #Sesriem #Namibia #Africa #NamibRand #DarkSkyReserve #NamibDesert #СоссусвлейДезертЛодж #Намибия

AndBeyond will open its Sossusvlei Desert Lodge  on Oct. 16 after a 10-month complete rebuild. The lodge is located in Namibia's NamibRand Nature Reserve within the world's oldest desert and the continent's only Dark Sky Reserve.

The new design maximizes views of both landscape and skyscape through floor-to-ceiling glass walls and above-bed, retractable skylights while still embracing AndBeyond's core ethos of sustainability with as light a footprint as possible.
The 10 suites, each of them 1,400 square feet, act as their own solar power plant, producing enough energy to power electricity, air conditioning and water treatment and recycling systems. Each suite will have desert views from every corner as well as butler hatches with secret, solar-powered freezer drawers stocked with ice cream and Namibian craft beer;  in-room fireplaces and artist easels; large private verandas with outdoor showers and fire pits; chilled plunge pools; and a desert essential rack complete with sunblock, facial spritzer, kikoi (African pareo), sun hat, walking stick and Swarovski Optik binoculars.

Travelers will have a variety of options for dining venues, from personalized dinners on the terrace or the rooftop underneath the stars to sand dune picnics in the nearby "fairy circles" (mysterious circles with no vegetation growing in them found in the grasslands of the Namib Desert). A new kitchen will also enable travelers to get their hands dirty with cooking lessons from curing light and sustainable game meat to making ice cream.

The lodge also features a new wellness center, a gym which is strategically positioned to catch the desert sunrise for early morning yoga flows, or a treadmill run and a spa.

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwean dollar the sole currency

ZIMBABWE BANS ALL FOREX

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has made the Zimbabwean dollar the sole currency for legal tender purposes  Coming into effect today, the British pound, United States dollar, South African Rand, Botswana Pula and any other foreign currency whatsoever shall no longer be a legal tender alongside the Zimbabwean dollar in any transactions in Zimbabwe.  This ends the multiple currency regime that Zimbabwe has been using.

It has been confirmed that clients will have to exchange their Forex for Zimbabwe dollar to buy food in restaurants and retail outlets (groceries, bottled water etc.) since Zimbabwe dollar will be the only legal tender. You cannot change / pay in forex at restaurants any longer.

When paying for an tourism activity in Zimbabwe however, operators are still accepting Forex without any issues for tours and transfers – ZAR, BWP, Pounds, USD.

Clients are advised to plan well for their expenses in Victoria Falls and only change a small amount of forex for meals etc if necessary, as Bureaus and banks have limited trading hours over weekends which means that you may not be able to buy or sell Zimbabwe Dollars over the weekend.

Incompetence at Bank Windhoek has a name: Vernonn Coetzee

#IncompetentVernonnCoetzee #BadServiceBankWindhoek #BankWindhoekNamibiaFailed #InferioriBankWindhoekService #VernonnCoetzeesIncompetence #ComplaintAboutVernonnCoetzee

Incompetence at Bank Windhoek has a name: Vernonn Coetzee

We made an advanced order of foreign currency amount to buy at Bank Windhoek, Namibia. Our order was confirmed several times by Vernonn Coetzee, Forex Teller at Windhoek main branch.
Two weeks after confirmation Vernonn Coetzee informed us of order cancellation on the ground that we have no transactional account at Bank Windhoek. Vernonn Coetzee, a professional of highest qualification, has taken only two weeks to check our details and order and realise it.

As a result we had to buy part of the original amount from other dealers with some substantial financial loss. Bank Windhoek has also lost some profit.
To add insult to injury we could buy part of the originally requested amount from other BW branch without any problems and that branch employees confirmed that absence of transactional account is NOT a requirement to buy what we wanted to buy.
