Namibia: Reopening of Ongava Game Reserve | Онгава Намибия

People at the center of conservation at Ongava

Namibia's well-entrenched Parks and People policies empower communities to sustainably utilise their ancestral land. The enlightened approach has lead to upwards of half of Namibia's land surface area achieving one or other degree of conservation status. Of which approximately 17% of our country's conservation estate is the proclaimed protected areas such as the giant Namib-Naukluft and Etosha National Parks.

The nation's Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) legislation make provision for communities to form legally recognised entities that have rights to sustainably utilise their natural resources (the legal terminology: they are granted usufruct).

For National Parks, in the absence of a resident community, the immediate neighbouring Community qualifies as "the resident Community". The original inhabitants of the Etosha region are the Hai//om Community, of which the last of the free-living Hai//om "San Bushman" of Etosha were corralled 65 years ago. As their freedoms reduced they experienced increasing socio-economic marginalisation.

The democratically elected government of Namibia began to make reparations for this injustice including the award of a significant expanse of the south-central portion of the Etosha National Park, and related resettlement farms along the southern boundary have been acquired, to form a remedial project to develop a sustainable range of benefits for the dispossessed community upon their ancestral land.

Following state resource tender procedures the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism supported the Community in identifying a private sector investor and operator. Of the proposals submitted during the formal RFP we at Ongava, together with our empowerment partners, are delighted to be selected as the preferred bidder by the !Gobaub Association, representing the Hai//om Community.

Nature First is the singular focus that guides Ongava. The intention of the Ongava impact investment is to provide diverse upliftment opportunities for the rural community, opportunities that will empower the community to command agency over their destiny in a sustainable manner. Here’s a fun overview:

The Ongava Hai//om joint venture

Community-based Natural Resource Management in Namibia

The legendary conservationist Ian Player was the first to articulate, using the allegory of a three-legged traditional cooking pot, that successful conservation requires three pillars to be in harmony - Conservation, Commerce and Community. We couldn't think of a more relevant Community than our neighbours - the Hai//om - to embark on this ambitious rewilding, renewal and reintroduction project.

Adventure beckons! ELENA, we look forward to sharing this vital journey with you. Meet our Partners, the Hai//om (pronounced “Hi Com”, "//" denotes a click in the middle):

We are the Rhino Shepherds

Ongava Camps closure April 2020 - May 2021

To matters at hand - for many years our business has been built on warm hospitality and memorable wildlife experiences, which is at odds with social distancing. Our focus is on the well-being of our families, our colleagues and our fellow citizens and - as previously communicated - Ongava hospitality operations remain suspended up to May 31st, 2021.

Ongava is an enclave of calm where nature can go about its business unhindered – young impala rams play-fighting, a bumblebee busily pollinating an acacia blossom, a ground squirrel balancing on his hind limbs surveying his harem. A pride of tawny beasts, pads puffing dust, seek shade. Francolins fuss, a cicada heralds the blazing midday heat.

Opening Specials

Ongava hospitality reopens on Tuesday June 1st, 2021 with fantastic Specials for frontline health care workers and long stay guests:

In recognition of their selfless commitment and courage Frontline Healthcare workers qualify for 35% off Ongava Recommended Selling (Rack) Rate up to 31 December 2022.

The Ongava Long Stay Special - less 25% for bookings from four days and more - is extended through High Season 2021 ends June 2022.

Ongava Reservations service continues uninterrupted apart from 24 December (Christmas Eve), 25 December (Christmas Day), 26 December (Family Day), 31 December (Old Year’s Eve), and 1 January (New Year’s Day).

As always please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions.

Compliments of the Season!

We can barely contain our excitement at all the wonderful adventures and developments that lie in store. It is only appropriate that we thank you for helping us to protect wild places and endangered species.

It is my fervent desire that we can share a cheerful campfire under the southern cross in the not too distant future.

Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a safe, successful 2021.

CAPE TOWN

SOUTH AFRICA

The summer festive season - now upon us at last - catapults Cape Town into the world’s apex holiday destinations. It is unquestionable that, during the summer, the city transforms into one of the hottest, most desirable spots of the international lifestyle and cultural scenes. With is flawless natural beauty and singularly intimate luxury experiences, Cape Town surprises with the variety of unique encounters.

Indeed, a summer in the Cape is always synonymous with the spectacular sunshine days, sparkling oceans, and pearlescent sand beaches that define its Mediterranean climate. A mere forty-minute-long drive out of the city to the iconic Boland region yields abundant Provençale vineyards in which not only some of the world’s best wine but also food are to be found.

But it’s not just the city’s natural and culinary singularity that guarantees a premium lifestyle experience; the South African creative impetus without fail always reaches its climax during the hottest months of the year, in which the country and continent’s most brilliant and dynamic creative minds converge on Africa’s southernmost tip.

As just one example of the summer of 2020’s offerings for those choosing to make the cultural pilgrimage to Cape Town is Kate Gottgens’ striking new exhibition at SMAC gallery in Cape Town, entitled Skyglow on Mars Black. Featuring a new body of dystopian paintings made by the Capetonian artist Gottgens during the lockdown months, her artworks are a striking collection of brightly-hued, futuristic canvases which invite both deep introspection as well as escape. With its imaginary landscapes and arresting visual qualities, Gottgens’ exhibit is a testament to the creative, reflexive spirit of South African art—qualities which will surely make Cape Town one of the most enticing post-coronavirus destinations in terms of its cultural innovations.

In a similar vein, Stevenson Gallery recently inaugurated its second exhibition with the artist Mame-Diarra Niang entitled Call Me When You Get There. A collection of 52 intimate works conceived during lockdown isolation out of a desire to exercise freedom of movement and to overcome psychological and physical boundaries through technology, Niang’s exhibit invites the viewer to lose themselves within the stills of warped Google Maps images—a call to freedom and escape after a year that has been largely defined by stasis and restriction.

Although strikingly different from a visual perspective, in both Gottgens’ and Niang’s exhibitions, we find the common threads of introspection and escapism; both exhibits are striking testaments to the power of the imagination of African contemporary art. This escapist impulse, this imagination, although perhaps in a different sense and context, is also shared by us. Indeed, we at In Residence are uncompromisingly dedicated to fulfilling our mission of realizing our clientele’s desire for intimacy and escape through our carefully-curated luxury villas and in-house concierge service which ensure a discreet, personalized, and refined experience of the Mother City and all that it has to offer.

Moreover, Cape Town’s array of accessible holiday experiences and accommodation is rendered even more accessible in the summertime, with global airlines offering direct seasonal flights from major cities across the United States and Europe.

If you desire a truly unique destination experience, Cape Town beckons. We at In Residence look forward to welcoming you this summer to our villas, and wish you the warmest season’s greetings.

See You Soon,

Pieter & The In Residence Team

Namibia: Erongo Wild Lodge news | Эронго Вайлд Лодж Намибия

John Burroughs once said “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”

With that in mind we would like to welcome you back to THE ERONGO WILD - nature in its purest form. A place of vast open spaces where you are invited to join us as a family, as we gently navigate this new course of life - moving at a leisurely pace, yet confidently - into the future.

2020 has been a year of hard-hitting and heart-breaking realities. Covid-19 has brought us back to the basics. And yet, even under the worst of circumstances - we are all capable of embracing change and believing in new beginnings. Change means letting go and making space for the new. For us this choice resulted in a decision to take back the reigns of The Erongo Wild after our tenants terminated their lease agreement (joint media statement available).

As a family, we decided to get back to our core, to review the incredible and captivating gift we have been given, and to stand together to make this gift, The Erongo Wild, accessible to everyone in need of rest, relaxation, adventure and inspiration.

We are excited to welcome you, our most valued guests and clients, to celebrate the ability to overcome and the strength that exists in every single one of us.

The Erongo Wild offers ten luxurious tented chalets and a self-catering unit with two rooms (only available mid-2021), built on stilts among the towering granite boulders of the Erongo Mountain hills. Surrounded by open and vast spaces you will find rest for your soul.

Our restaurant is set on top of a hill, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape whilst at the same time tantalizing your senses with awe-inspiring refreshments and locally-harvested cuisine.

For those who yearn for nature in its purest untarnished form, we are starting development of exclusive camping sites each within its own magical space amidst a pristine and uniquely Namibian landscape - where soon we will be providing you with ample breathing space to simply BE.

As a family, we acknowledge our Namibian heritage that is deeply rooted in community support and overcoming hardships TOGETHER. Our Lodge has been reborn with keeping to Namibians, and supporting local as far as what we possibly can.

With Namibia, for Namibia has also inspired us to initiate and embark on a new “Project 2020”, a community-involved farming project which will include vegetables, herbs, beef, hog & poultry, all set to support families in becoming self-sufficient. All our delicious harvests will ultimately be served in our restaurant and be locally available.

Footsteps in Africa: reopening of Botswana camps

Footsteps in Africa

We're making your return easier than ever.

At last the year is coming to an end. We can all breath a sigh of relief and look towards the light coming towards us from what looks like the end of the tunnel. We are elated that the international travel restrictions have been lifted and Botswana’s borders will be open to international carriers from today.

This year has brought an ever-changing onslaught of news and information that was relevant one day and irrelevant the next. Needless to say, this has kept us on our toes. It is always our intention to share accurate and concise information with our trade partners and receiving anything but from the world at large, gave us pause.

The state of affairs as they directly relate to us including, border openings, quarantine provisions and protocols for travel both here and abroad have been ambiguous up until now. Finally, we have clarity around the opening of borders with international travel for all nationalities commencing from December into Botswana with transit through South Africa unhindered. In addition, we have had the news of a vaccine, which has bolstered our belief that after one more winter in the Northern Hemisphere the situation will begin to ease.

While waiting for a coherent response to international travel our lodge owners and operations teams have been cautious in choosing opening dates. However, throughout the collection dates have now been set. We are excited to announce that all of the camps and lodges within the collection will focus the coming months on refurbishing, undergoing necessary maintenance, and giving staff training to refresh their already well-honed skills. In addition they will be ensuring that they have established and are familiar with the new protocols and standards of care for our guest’s health and wellbeing.

Below are the reopening dates for the collection:

Delta Camp: 15th March 2021

Deception Valley Lodge: 1st April 2021

Camp Savuti: 1st April 2021

Camp Linyanti: 1st April 2021

Oddballs’ Camp: 1st June 2021

Oddballs’ Enclave: 1st June 2021

Should you have a booking due to travel before these opening dates we will be contacting you directly.

Reopening Specials:

To celebrate the reopening we have some incredible last minute and local residents’ specials.

Contact us for more details.

New Terms and Conditions:

We are aware that although people across the world are eager to travel again as soon as possible, this year has left many reluctant to commit to bookings and payments unless there is flexibility in the terms. We are committed to providing our partners and in turn their guests security and flexibility and have therefore updated our bookings terms and conditions which will be affective on all NEW bookings made after 1st November 2020.

If travel is affected by any COVID19 related issues as follows:

° Borders closures or travel bans issued in either travellers originating, transit or destination country.

° The Government in the guest’s country of origin OR destination country imposes a mandatory quarantine and guests are unable to travel

° International flights are cancelled, and the guests are unable to travel

° Guests test positive for COVID-19 prior to arrival (proof will be required) and a vaccine not have been available to them beforehand
