South Africa: Chancellor, Theresa, Mackay, African Belle, Stella & Voortrekker shipwrecks

September 12:

“This day in our shipwreck and aeronautical wreck history”

1854: Chancellor, this wooden sailing vessel wrecked on Martha’s Strand near Skipskop in the Western Cape. Two of the passengers drowned during the wrecking.

1861: Theresa, this schooner cables parted during a southerly gale and it wrecked on the west bank of the Buffalo River in East London in the Eastern Cape.

1871: Mackay, this British wooden sailing barque wrecked in a south-easterly gale at De Mond, north of Struisbaai in the Western Cape. The wreck occasionally washes open when the tide reaches up high enough to wash out some of the dunes. It is locally known affectionately as the ‘Maggie’.

1873: African Belle (possibly African Queen), this sailing brig wrecked on the west back of the Kowie River in Port Alftred in the Eastern Cape. It was later blown up to clear the shipping channel.

1876: Stella, this sailing barque wrecked after its cables parted in a south-easterly gale in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. Another source lists the day of wrecking as the 18th of September instead. 

1993: Voortrekker, this oil rig supply tug foundered about 3 km from the Gouritz River mouth in the Western Cape. It had capsized on the 10th of September, about 80 km offshore, trapping the crew of 12 and the ship’s cat inside the upturned hull. Three of the crew managed to escape, although one later died from his injuries. Heroic divers attempted in four different operations to rescue those that were trapped, but the rough seas made this task impossible. It was towed closer to the coast in the hopes that rescue attempts would be easier in calmer coastal waters. Two bodies surfaced during the towing, and then, on this day, two days after being upturned, it sank, claiming the remaining seven men, and the ship’s cat, Lighthouse. It settled, still upside down, hull up, at a depth of 40 m and in a thick mud, which made body recovery attempts futile. There is a memorial in the Port of Mossel Bay commemorating those who lost their lives and the local SPCA has a framed memorial for the cat. In 2012, whilst draining fuel that had started leaking, divers also erected a cross on the wreck.

South Africa: Unity, Maron Neil, Hopefield Packet, Kerriefontein, Maranatha & Ikan Tanda shipwrecks

“This day in our shipwreck and aeronautical wreck history”

1859: Unity, the area of the wrecking of this British wooden sailing brig is under question as different sources claim different areas in the Western Cape as the wrecking site, such as Dassen Island, Saldanha Bay, and Bellows Rock. The most likely explanation is that it was lost on Bellows Rock off the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape and that its wreckage washed up as far north as Dassen Island and Saldanha Bay. The crew of ten and its 6 passengers were all lost.

1885: Maron Neil, this sailing barque wrecked on Orient Beach, just east of the Buffalo River, in East London in the Eastern Cape after its cables parted.

1888: Hopefield Packet, this sailing schooner ran aground and possibly wrecked in Paternoster Bay on the Vredenburg Peninsula in the Western Cape. It is possible that it was refloated.

1976: Kerriefontein, this South African fishing vessel foundered in Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape.

1986: Maranatha, this fishing trawler ran aground near the Gouritz River mouth in the Western Cape after having sprung a leak. The crew was assisted by the NSRI and it is possible that it was refloated.

Ikan Tanda

2001: Ikan Tanda, this Singaporean cargo carrier was driven ashore during a storm near Scarborough on the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape after a fire broke out in its engine room and it lost power about 40 km outside of Cape Town. The crew were rescued by SAAF helicopters and the vessel was refloated by assistance from the tugs, John Ross and Wolraad Woltemade, which towed it 300 km out to sea to be scuttled, by order of the SAMSA.

Zeila shipwreck in Namibia

August 8:

“This day in our shipwreck and aeronautical wreck history”

1750: Elephant, this wooden-hulled Danish East Indiaman wrecked at the Gouritz River mouth in the Western Cape. The crew experienced hardship on the return journey from the East, with many falling ill. It was eventually decided to attempt to get the vessel to Mossel Bay but it was instead run aground at the mouth of the Gouritz River. The crew of 65 were all rescued by local farmers, and they travelled overland back to Cape Town.

1840: Le Cygne, this French wooden-hulled brigantine entered Table Bay late at night and ran aground near Paarden Island in the Western Cape and was later condemned. One man died because of the wrecking.

1847: Swiftsure, this wooden-hulled schooner wrecked during a strong north-westerly gale in Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape.

1862: A north-westerly gale in Table Bay resulted in the fouling of several vessels and the wrecking of three. On this day, two wooden hulled barques wrecked, and the following day would see another vessel wrecked:

• Kate, wrecked near the Salt River mouth.

• Crystal Palace, wrecked on Woodstock beach.

1889: Buffalo, this iron-hulled paddle-driven steam-powered tug wrecked after striking the sand bar in the Kowie River in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape whilst trying to assist the USS Saxon. The remains are often visible about 3 km up the river at ‘Buffalo Bend’.

1955: Natalia, this motor-powered fishing vessel was scuttled in Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape.

1963: A SAAF Avro Shackleton MR 3 (registration no. 1718/K) crashed on this day in the Stetteynskloof Valley just north east of Franschhoek in the Western Cape with the loss of all 14 crew. It was on its way to conduct a military exercise with the Royal Navy submarine HMS Alliance, having flown into, as the investigation board described, atrocious weather conditions, with a low icing height. The board held the captain solely responsible as he disobeyed direct orders by routing overland instead of oversea as was decided in the flight briefing. The crash site was discovered the following day as the weather made searches incredibly difficult.

1991: Fontao, this fishing vessel was scuttled south of the Umhlanga Lighthouse in KwaZulu-Natal by the Oceanographic Research Institute to form an artificial reef to study the rate at which wrecks are colonised by marine organisms. The remains are claimed to make for one of the best dives in South Africa with the deepest section lying around 27 m in depth and the top at about 17 m.
