Gondwana news: Road conditions in the Fish River Canyon area

February 2022

Rain brings blessings, so we say in Namibia.

While we celebrate the awakening of nature after abundant rainfall in some parts of the country, we would also like to draw your attention to the current road conditions, especially in Namibia’s south.

Road conditions in the Fish River Canyon area

Due to the rainy season, some travellers have experienced challenging road conditions on their way to the Fish River Canyon. We would like to inform you of the road conditions in the area and share some valuable tips with you.

Kindly advise your guests to use the official C12 gravel road that leads past the Naute Dam and is marked as such with signs along the road. Please refer to the map showing the correct route of the C12.

You are welcome to share this map with your clients, who would like to travel to our Canyon Collection properties, namely Canyon Lodge (CL), Canyon Village (CV) and Canyon Roadhouse (CRH), or to the Fish River Canyon.

The C12 as well as the C37 going past the Canyon Roadhouse are in some places affected by seasonally flowing rivers and might be eroded. Please advise your clients to drive cautiously during our rainy season (January to April).

The gravel road between Seeheim and Naute, which used to be the C12 is no longer passable. The Road Authority declassified this road a few years ago and stopped maintaining it. Unfortunately, some old GPS maps and Google Maps still refer to the Seeheim–Naute road as the C12, which confuses travelers.

Namibia: Bush Telegraph Greetings

Coming to our senses - Greetings

Omicron! Red alert in Europe: 'major incident' in London, lockdown in the Netherlands, quarantine barriers around and contact restrictions in Germany.

Here in Namibia, on the other hand, serenity prevails. Although Omicron is already much more dominant. The government decreased the maximum limit for gatherings from 500 to 200 people. And had a million masks distributed – to bus companies that transport thousands of Namibians during the holidays. That's it...

Why the difference? Obviously: In Europe, many more people live in a much smaller space. On average, people are much older. And it's winter there right now.

Namibia, on the other hand, has summer and vastness to offer. Etosha. Waterberg. Sossusvlei. Naukluft. Kalahari. Places with 7-day incidences tending towards zero. Ideal places for people who want to escape Omicron and the constant stress of changing measures.

It is completely paradoxical, then, that many European countries are sealing themselves off from southern Africa. They should actually rather encourage their citizens to travel to countries like Namibia. Less risk of being infected in the great outdoors. And for the home country every citizen travelling abroad is one less person to whom the virus can spread).

Another paradox: travellers are often treated with hostility as being irresponsible egoists at home. In fact, every vacationer helps countries like Namibia to recover from Corona and travel restrictions. Tourism is personal development aid on equal terms. Unique experiences for travellers, income for people as well as money for nature conservation in the host country.

Maybe Omicron will bring people to their senses a little. By making them realise

° that it is neither the first nor the last virus that makes the rounds worldwide,

° that we have to learn to live with viruses like Corona without barricading ourselves at home,

° that you cannot tell people for years what they have to do and what not to do without plausibly explaining, based on data, that these measures can have the desired effect,

° that a global pandemic cannot be successfully combatted if everyone thinks of nothing but oneself, be it regarding travel regulations or vaccine patents,

° and that it is thanks to Corona to have disclosed many hidden grievances between and within countries.

May Omicron prove to be a mild finale to the Corona pandemic and a transition to an annual flu wave, as virologists have forecasted under reserve.

May it enable countries like Namibia to achieve herd immunity without many fatalities, in a natural way, and without making rich biotechnology companies even richer.

But above all (this selfish wish should be allowed): May Omicron be done with Africa, Europe and the rest of the world by May.

So that from July after three years (!) Namibia can finally experience a reasonably normal high season again without unfair travel restrictions.

For the hundreds of thousands of Namibia fans all over the world. For the tens of thousands of Namibians who live from tourism. And for nature, which tourism helps protect and which is Namibia's most valuable sustainable export article.

With this in mind, from the zero-incidence area of the Namibian bush, I wish you a contemplative festive season and a new year 2022 that will be coming to its senses.

Bushtracks Africa: 7-Day Family Odyssey

Bushtracks Africa

Travel Updates: 7-Day Family Odyssey to Livingstone and the South Luangwa, Zambia

The UK now recognises more vaccines as Red List bought to zero

The UK's existing list of authorised vaccines for inward travel will be expanded to include Sinovac, Sinopharm Beijing, and Covaxin. Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have also now had their vaccination certificates recognized by the UK.

More vaccinated travellers will be able to fly with fewer restrictions as a result of this. A review of the quality, safety, and efficacy data led to this recognition.

UK Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps declared that no countries or territories were currently on the list. "We will keep the red list in place as a precautionary measure to protect public health, and we are prepared to add countries and territories if needed as the UK’s first line of defense if the situation changes." He also said it was a "great boost for travel and all those people employed in the travel sector".

The governments of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland stated they would follow suit in recognising these vaccines.

All under-18s arriving in England from a non-red list country or territory will be treated as fully vaccinated at the border, regardless of their vaccination status, according to the UK government.

They will not be subjected to self-isolation upon arrival, and will only be required to take a lateral flow test after that, with a free confirmation PCR test if the results are positive.

Update from Botswana Desert & Delta Safaris

Desert & Delta Safaris

BOTSWANA IS READY TO WELCOME YOU

Now is an excellent time to be on a Botswana safari with Desert & Delta Safaris.

We would like to reassure our travellers and travel partners that Desert & Delta Safaris and destination Botswana is travel ready. Right now!

We are now seeing the lifting of all travel restrictions and the rescinding of travel bans imposed on our region. This comes after the “knee-jerk” reaction from the UK government a few weeks ago and the other countries that followed subsequent to the discovery of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

We thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the reasons why travellers are ready and visiting.

° Botswana’s borders remain open and we do not anticipate the closure of any borders in Botswana or the SADC region.

° All Desert & Delta properties are open, fully stocked and staffed and looking forward to welcoming a large number of travellers over the holiday season.

° 96% of Desert & Delta staff are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

° All staff in the Desert & Delta camps conduct a Rapid Test prior to returning to service in their respective properties. All local travellers must produce a rapid test before travelling to our properties. All international travellers must produce a negative PCR test less than 72-hours old when arriving into Botswana.

° All properties have, and continue, to operate with strict COVID-19 hygiene policies which allow guests to travel efficiently and with minimal risk of infection.

° Air access to the region remains very accessible with regular flights to neighbouring South Africa & Victoria Falls from the USA, Europe & other African hubs. All flight connections into Maun and Kasane gateways operate on schedule.

° PCR tests for departing Botswana can be conducted at our properties and turned around within 1-day. This will ensure all travellers can get their COVID-19 negative test within the time to meet the requirements of all overseas countries.

° Should the unlikely happen and guests test positive for COVID-19 prior to returning home, a contingency plan is in place with accommodation and assistance on the ground within our own properties.

° Desert & Delta Safaris has been successfully welcoming international travellers since January 2021.

° All new bookings may cancel for a 100% refund up to 48-hours before travel should their trip be curtailed due to COVID-19 travel restrictions before or during their trip. This applies to COVID restrictions imposed in the country of origin, transit or Botswana.

° Banning travel to/from the SADC region in November should never have happened. It was a disappointing and unnecessary  reaction considering the significant work by our Botswana laboratories and South African partners in discovering this new COVID-19 variant and the transparent reporting provided to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

° With 90% of your day spent in the outdoors in remote safari areas – could there be a safer place to be? View post of the TOP TEN reasons why travelling to Botswana is still one of the ultimate post-pandemic destinations.

South Africa: Lammergeier Hide Giants Castle Nature Reserve

Deon Small is a Drakensberg (South Africa) guide who is sometimes referred to as the Vulture Whisperer as he talks about his special connection with these scavengers and shares his knowledge. So if this is your thing getting hold of Deon is a top tip.

The bearded vulture or Lammergeier is most famous for its method of dropping bones from a height and once broken these vultures eat the marrow inside. The bearded vulture is one of the shyest of vultures and lives a mostly solitary existence, on remote mountains and cliff faces.

A highlight offered to bird enthusiasts is a visit to the famous Lammergeier Hide located in the Giants Castle Nature reserve. From here you can get up close and personal with bearded vulture sightings and is a particularly special opportunity for birding photographers.

The vulture hide 'feeding season' is May to September, and bookings open in the previous November. Access is by 4x4 vehicle, provided by yourself or by the reserve. Alternatively, enquire about professional guides who will take you there or accompany you.

These impressive birds are classed as endangered in South Africa and can be seen soaring overhead on clear days. Vulture restaurants, however, are no fast food events. A lot of patience and some luck come into the equation. Its quite clear though some of the best images of bearded vultures have been taken from this hide.

5 Tips for Bearded Vulture photographers:

° Go where the birds are. The best site in South Africa to photograph Bearded Vultures is at Giants Castle Nature Reserve which provides one of the most predictable places to see them. The birds are attracted by regular and respectful feeding and photographers seldom leave the area without good sightings.

° Have patience, and pick the weather conditions. Predictable behaviour patterns include that Beaded Vultures tend to come in to feed in the mornings of clear, low-wind days.  They simply won’t arrive if it’s overcast, misty or blowing a gale.

° Use a camera that can capture motion.  The faster and longer the lens on your camera the better the photos you will be able to take of birds.  Ideally you need to be able to use a shutter speed in excess of 1/1000th/sec to get the clear, focused pictures that are so impressive.  A typical kit lens with a 250mm zoom will give you surprising respectable results.

° Focus on the bird, not the scenery.  Adjusting your F-stop down allows you to create an image that has your targeted bird in focus, with the background less intrusive.  Because the birds are very large, if you start with an F-stop between F5 and F8 you have the best option to get the whole bird in focus – but not the distraction of the background. For a photographer, the wonderful red ring around the eyes makes the first rule of animal photography "focus on the eye" a lot easier than many other birds.

° Use familiar settings.  If you are nervous about getting your camera’s manual settings wrong and prefer pre-programmed modes, use the ‘sports’ mode. Typically the birds stay at the feeding site for no more than two minutes at a time.  That’s not the time to be dithering about your camera settings.  You will have time while waiting for the birds to fly in. Use that to try a few different settings so that you are happy to concentrate on the birds and the composition when they arrive.

Where should you stay when visiting the lammergeier Hide?

° Game Castle Main Camp. The biggest benefit is that its right there. All accommodation is equipped for self-catering and there is also the Izimbali restaurant  and bar provides guests with the option of simple catered meals

° Antbear Lodge. This has got to be my top tip. Situated near to Giants Castle Nature Reserve this accommodation establishment offers a unique sustainable eco-experience inside a luxury cave. Their farm to plate concept for meals are special and Antbear Lodge the only establishment I have ever found to even make their own cheese. This is an experience in itself,

° White Mountain Lodge. Also situated near to Giants Castle Nature reserve white mountain lodge offers very affordable self-catering accommodation.

News from Bushtracks Safaris: Covid-19 Omicron variant

Bushtracks Safaris news

COVID-19 OMNICROM VARIANT: WHAT WE KNOW TODAY

The Omicron variant which was recently identified in South Africa ahead of any other country was due to their robust surveillance and genomics capability.

South African leaders and the industry at large strongly condemned countries around the world for enacting travel bans on much of Southern Africa without any reliable scientific data.

As we await more scientific facts from the experts, here's what we know for now:

° The travel bans are a cautionary move, allowing scientists the next few weeks to learn more about the transmission of this variant, the severity of any symptoms, and the effectiveness of the existing vaccines and boosters.

° We don't know where Omicron originated, but we know it has been mutating for several months and as of Dec 2, 2021, the variant has been reported in 25 countries.

° Government and health officials continue to strongly encourage Covid-19 vaccines and boosters as the best means of protection.

° The South African doctor who first raised the alarm over the new strain, Dr. Angelique Coetzee, told the BBC that the associated symptoms seen so far have been “extremely mild.”

Travel restrictions are unlikely to be able to stop the spread of coronaviruses unless countries are able to completely seal their borders to travellers from all nations.

While the safety of all concerned must be considered, it is heart-breaking that this has happened to our industry that is grappling to get back on its feet after the past 20 months.

We want to assure you that the Bushtracks team is closely monitoring all information provided by global organizations such as the CDC (Centers of Disease Control), the WHO (World Health Organization), and local governments on this rapidly changing situation.

As we await more scientific facts from the experts, we encourage those who have clients travelling, to not cancel or postpone trips until we know how long travel restrictions are in place.

Please do reach out to us if we can assist you in any way.

Kind regards,

Christopher Tett & the Bushtracks Team
