Namibia: The unsolved mystery of the Vlissingen

The unsolved mystery of the Vlissingen

Ultimately, Europe is the Mecca for treasure hunters. Conversely, when it comes to finding lost treasures Namibia unfortunately does not provide the same opportunities. Consequently, if the opportunity does arise to find any kind of possible treasure then my interest is immediately sparked.  Such an opportunity arose on a visit to Meob Bay which was determined to be the last resting place of the Vlissingen.  The treasures to look out for were 1746 copper coins (Duiten) and 1743 Silver Pillar Dollars.

On 9 January 1747, the 130 feet long United Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship Vlissingen left the Netherlands, on its 5th journey. Unfortunately for the Company and the 227 crew aboard, the vessel was never to return. Bearing in mind that the Vlissingen reported that many of its crew were already sick when still in the North Atlantic, it is highly likely that illness and death played a role in the demise of the vessel, besides the structural damage she had incurred. Bad weather at the time of crossing the Atlantic could have been another contributing factor. To this day the circumstances of her vanishing remains a mystery.

As part of her cargo she carried thousands of copper coins (Doits / Duiten) and an unidentified amount of silver dollars.

The Duiten were specifically minted for the Zeeland Chamber of the Dutch East India Company. The coins were struck in 1746, in the town of Middelburg. It was common practice for outward-bound vessels to carry coins and bar metal that was used as currency to obtain Asiatic goods.  Homeward-bound ships mainly carried oriental products such as spices, textiles and porcelain, as well as large quantities of Dutch coins.  The coins found near Meob Bay dated 1746, indicated that they had probably not been in circulation and were on their way to the Dutch trading posts in the East.

Old diamond mining reports dating back to the early 20th century mention silver and copper coins being found scattered along a part of the Namibian coast near Meob Bay. The silver coins originated from Mexico when this was still a Spanish colony and were used by the VOC to trade in the East Indies, moreover also known as the romantic “piece of eight” and was the very first U.S. Dollar in the United States until 1857. These coins were actually “cut” into 8 pieces, for change.

A couple of years ago a tour guide made a spectacular discovery between the sand dunes at Conception Water, hundreds of copper Duiten lay scattered on the sand.  It is suspected that a miner, labourer or traveler collected them whilst walking along the beach. Obviously, the bag with its useless contents did not withstand the harsh elements resulting in it rupturing scattering the coins onto the ground. Indeed, a spectacular find.

Ruins of Chonguene Hotel, Xai Xai, Mozambique, southern Africa - video

Ruins of Chonguene Hotel, located in Xai Xai, Mozambique.

#RuinsMozambique #MysteryAfrica #Abandoned

This Hotel was probably abandoned before or during the Mozambique Civil War (1977-1992).

Location:

GPS: -25.097966, 33.787237 Old building is located between ocean and sand dunes. There is an empty Olympic sized swimming pool with the old diving platform still in place. The hotel was built during the time when the Portuguese ruled in Mozambique and a person named D’Oliveira was its owner. It was abandoned when the independence war ended in 1975 after infamous 20/24 decree in which the Portuguese were forced to leave Mozambique with 20 kg of luggage within 24 hours. Up till now Mozambican people refuse to live in houses occupied by Portuguese before, and therefore this hotel hasn’t been occupied by squatters. There have been some rumours about a South African company wanting to invest and restore this building but so far nothing has happened. It was a luxury resort with an Olympic size pool, servant’s quarters, lounges and dining rooms, ball rooms and huge patios. Each room had an en-suite bathroom. The carport shows signs that it had a workshop for repairs to cars and then there is of course the view to the beach. The hotel has 110 units and sits on 12000 ha of land with 5 km of private beach. It is said that it was surrounded 23000 ha game reserve when Mr. D’Oliveira owned the place in the 1960’s. Previous guests to the hotel still talks about the fish prepared for them and delivered on silver platters. The attention to detail in the magnificent place was astonishing. History of this place is not so fortunate. It is said that after this decree mentioned above some of the Portuguese civilians failed to leave the country before the deadline that had been set by the government. They hid in the vast property of the Chongoene Hotel. They were tracked by soldiers and finally executed. We don’t know how many people were there and how long they were held hostage there. Now, it is believed they are sometimes wandering along empty corridors. If you are in this area it is worth to visit this abandoned and maybe even haunted place. There is a book written by PJH Petter-Bowyer mentioning a meeting held at Chongoene Hotel in 1973. The book is called “Winds of Destruction” - the autobiography of a Rhodesian-born pilot covering the Rhodesian bush war of 1967-1982. “On 22 June 1979 Maputo sent this message to Xai Xai:- “Do all the preparations in Chongoene Hotel in order to receive the participants to the conference of the five Patriotic Front and representatives of ZANU foreseen for next July”. The meeting a Chongoene Hotel was likely to commence on Saturday 30 June or 1 July but because ZANU and ZAPU seldom saw eye to eye, there was always the possibility that one part would walk out on the other.

18. "Dee"

Date: 06.02.1905

Possession Island

SS DEE ran aground and was wrecked on Possession Island while on passage from Cape Town to Angra Pequina, SW Africa with general cargo on the 6th February 1905. Owned since 1902 by Cape of Good Hope SS Syndicate Ltd (e T Chaddock, Mgr) Cape Town.

19. "Diamond mine vehicles dump site"

Location: 28°26'09.22"S 16°16'06.37"E

Location: Oranjemund area. The Consolidated Diamond Mines (De Beers) have the largest diamond mine earth moving vehicle machinery fleet graveyard in the world. Visits to diamond area are prohibited due to security reasons. Once a vehicle has been used for diamond harvesting, it is not allowed to leave the mine site anymore, even after end of its lifespan. Machines of any types have been collected up in this graveyard since early 1900's. Possible reason is that people could find diamonds hidden in these old machines should it be released from prohibited area. There are enough vintage machines to open a large museum.

This graveyard of relics portrait long history of the Namibian diamond mining since first diamond was found at Kolmanskop in Sperrgebiet by Zacharias Lewala. There are some surplus Sherman tanks used to bulldoze sand, a train of 20th century railroad cars with German markings and World War II battle tank with a British insignia on it had a huge steel blade welded in front of the gun turret as De Beers converted these tanks to bulldozers.
