Zambia: Simalaha Horse Safaris from Chundukwa Lodge | Сималаха Сафари Замбия

#SimalahaHorseSafaris #Zambia #ChundukwaRiverLodge

Simalaha Horse Safaris, Zambia

Horse Safaris

Doug and Gail have opened a new chapter.

We are now operating Multi-day Horse-riding Safaris in the Simalaha Community Conservancy - close to Botswana, Namibia and The Victoria Falls!

SIMALAHA  (said Sim-a-la-ha!) means 'COME TOGETHER'.

Chief Nyambo Yeta of the Lozi people residing along the Zambezi River, along with Peace Parks, invited Doug and Gail to be the first operator to set up Horse Safaris within the Simalaha Community Conservancy.

The Senior Chief's vision is to promote Sustainable Tourism in the Simalaha in order to provide revenue and employment to his people as well as conserve the wildlife and natural resources in the area - an area that forms part of the Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), which is the largest transfrontier park in the world.

16 species of plains game have already been re-wilded into the area since 2012 and are grazing peacefully with the herdsmen's cattle. This makes for fantastic horse-back safaris - combining wildlife and cultural participation for guests.

SIMALAHA IS A HORSE RIDER'S DREAM

With vast open flood plains, mopane and acacia woodlands this makes for fantastic riding country.

Simalaha is only 2 hours drive from Chundukwa Lodge and Livingstone, the home of the magnificent Victoria Falls. This is a perfect opportunity for horse riders from around the world to fulfil not only their riding dreams but combine that with a bucket list adventure to see Victoria Falls.

NOW ON OFFER

There are various Fully Inclusive package opportunities that combine a Horse Safari with a stay at Chundukwa River Lodge offering direct access to Victoria Falls and all the amazing activities in the Livingstone area.

The Season Opens - when the flood waters of the Zambezi reside, from 1 July - 31 January.

The Camp - sleeps up to 8 people in 4 tents elevated above the plains on platforms with luxury beds and linen, ensuite bathrooms with fantastic hot showers and solar lighting. The whole camp is off grid.

Riding Safaris are booked on a minimum of 4 pax and maximum of 8. (For 2021 we will accept a minimum of 2 pax.).

An elevated shaded lounge ensures 360 degree views, and the plunge pool overlooks the water hole, for some game viewing in the heat of the day.

TRANSFERS

Simalaha can be accessed by boat, road or helicopter.

Boat transfers can be arranged from Mambova, Kasane (Botswana) or Katima Mulilo (Namibia) and are approximately 2-3 hours depending on the pick up location. Road transfers are available from Livingstone, Kasane, or Katima Mulilo, and are approximately 2 hours.

Helicopter flight from Livingstone takes 45 minutes.

Fixed wing charters - an airstrip is currently being built - please chat to us and we will keep you updated.

Simalaha Horse Safaris Zambia - Background and Horses

Horses

Our horses  are well schooled bush horses and include a variety Boerperds, Quarter Horses and Basuto Horses. We use saddles to suit all riders; Western, English, Australian stock and Trail saddles. Our horses range from 14.3 to 16 hands and have a weight limit of 100kg (unless prior arrangements have been made).

Doug Evans

Doug's background as a Horseman goes back 40 years having ridden and trained horses for National Parks anti-poaching units. After leaving the wildlife department and opening Chundukwa River Lodge in 1992, he started horse trails at Chundukwa which still exist today as a large active stable yard servicing not only our horses but the local community who livery and ride their horses from here. Doug went on to school horses for Polo and Polo Crosse in Zambia and was a founder member of the Zambian Polo Crosse Association, having coached the national team to compete at World Cup level. Doug is a bushman and his love for horses is the driving force behind Simalaha Horse Safaris.

Marching Along
We love this time of year on the Zambezi. Rain! And the bright skies and clean air after the the storm is over. Lush green surrounds, and a rising river. Sunsets painted in between the clouds - the best time to be out on the water. A hint of mist and cooler air in the mornings.
And, naturally, as the waters arrive from the floodplains higher up the Zambezi, the Victoria Falls fill up. A large mushroom cloud of spray hovers above the Falls, pinpointing their location. A visit to the Falls guarantees awe - and a soaking.
After much concern and hype from the media towards the end of last year regarding Victoria Falls drying up, we are reminded of the natural cycle of the water levels of the Zambezi, and Victoria Falls.
