Namibia: Garub Railway Station vandalized by tourists

Garub Railway Station, located in the south of Namibia, a popular sighting spot for wild horses of the Namib was vandalised by group of self-drivers recently. Garub not listed as an official heritage site, however it is protected under the National Heritage Act because it is in a conservation area, the Namib-Naukluft Park, which includes part of the desert.
Holidaying vandals who posted film of themselves spray painting graffiti from Cape Town to northern Namibia on Instagram have allegedly been identified and shamed following some thorough investigation by locals. The defacing of a colonial-era railway station in the world’s oldest desert so incensed Nrupesh Soni, 37, that he set about tracking down the culprits via their social media. By matching the tags daubed on the abandoned Garub station, in the Namib-Naukluft Park in south-western Namibia, to hashtags and check-ins on Instagram, he claims to have uncovered the gang’s trail.

After Mr Soni, a travel consultant, posted his detective work on Facebook last week, word soon spread and reported sightings of the visitors and evidence of their alleged activity began flooding in.

Hospitality Association of Namibia stressed that Namibians should take a stand against vandalism to show they care for the environment and the country's heritage. The main body representing the hospitality industry in Namibia is appalled at the disrespect shown by foreign tourists who sprayed graffiti on one of the country's historic buildings,The Namibian newspaper reports.

Avoid Hochland Nest camping site!

Niel_vd_Wath wrote a review Jul 2015
Paarl, South Africa
Hochland Nest camping site !! Do Not Ever Go There !!

Hochland Nest Camping site is not owned by the Lodge although they do the bookings and should therefore make sure that the facilities are kept clean and presentable to the public. It is confusing because the camping and lodge operate under the same name, but are not at all on the same standard.

The camping site is owned by the Namibian Water Works and is run by Hochland Nest Lodge. The facilities at the camping grounds are beyond disgusting (spider webs in the showers, foul smelling water, condoms in the toilets and no drinking water ANYWHERE!!

The camping site itself is not kept up to standard and there are thorns big enough to puncture your car's tyres. This is ironical because you can't drive to where you are camping and have to carry everything down a 5 meter long steep hill. There are about 10 or 15 camping plots but they are each just a few meters wide and they all share the same disgusting ablution block that is at the top of the hill by the reception.

The guy who took our booking was very unorganized and could barely speak English. The owner of the Lodge then showed up and showed us the camping plots in the dark. There is also no power or water at the camping plots. When we asked about water to drink they scurried and "please explained" and after 30 minutes they brought 10 liters of drinking water for 13 people. We had to cook, make coffee, brush our teeth and wash hands with that water because the tap water is sickening.

They are so ashamed of the place that when we complained they offered to fully refund us for the entire two nights we booked (we only stayed that one horrible night).

We drove very far that day and expected a relaxing evening. Instead we arrived at a horrible place like Hochland Nest. Even their rates where ridiculous. We payed the same amount at Daan Viljoen Game Reserve and Erindi Private Game Reserve and got to see some of the Big Five and had nice and clean ablution blocks.

Date of stay: July 2015

Namibia: new maritime museum in Luderitz

The harbour town of Luderitz in southern Namibia is hoping to attract more tourists with the construction of a new maritime museum.

Developers say the museum, planned to be opened in 2019, will be housed in an old power station following renovations. The site will also serve as a research center for the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

Sam Nujoma, Namibia's founding president, attended a presentation about the project in Luderitz. The promoter is Angel Tordesillas, a former fishing company executive.

Luderitz was booming a century ago because of the discovery of diamonds in the area. Today, most shipping goes through Walvis Bay, further north on the Atlantic coast.

Luderitz resident Crispin Clay describes the maritime museum as a "magnificent project" and says: "I just hope it works."
