Botswana: Ker & Downey's new Okavango Delta property - Maxa Camp

KER & DOWNEY BOTSWANA'S INNOVATIVE NEW PROPERTY IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Through a partnership with the Mmagamka Trust and members of the Bukakhwe tribe who live in the village of Gudigwa, Ker & Downey Botswana’s new Okavango Delta property will open on the 20th March 2025.

ABOUT MAXA

Nestled under a canopy of towering Ebony trees, Maxa overlooks the permanent Maxa Lagoon, and is located on the South-Eastern Panhandle within Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Ideally situated where the nutrient rich clear headwaters of the Okavango meet the meandering channels of the Selinda Spillway, an expansive network of seldomly explored seasonal floodplains, this fascinating area in the heart of the Kaza Transfrontier Park (an area half the size of California) features a network of permanent and seasonally inundated channels and lagoons.

The philosophy of Maxa centers around exploration, learning and the freedom to be immersed in nature. The camp’s unique appearance captures this with a freeform separated lounge and dining area, set under light canvas roofs, partially enclosed by traditional clay walls. The design is complemented with handmade local furniture which lends a creative spirit to the decor and lighting.

Situated between the lounge and dining areas, with white delta sand underfoot, is the camp “courtyard”, with picnic style tables for meals in the breezy shade or under the stars.  In a culinary twist, a central feature of the main area is a termite mound that originally helped form the island.  Here, guests will be welcomed by the smells of freshly baked bread and muffins from Maxa’s wood fired “oven” which will also produce other delightful meals prepared meticulously by our chef.

At the edge of the camp’s riverine forest tree over looking the lagoon is another cluster of Ebony trees, forming a natural enclosure. Here, a Sala with a cushioned day bed is complemented by an elevated deck, with a suspended cargo net hammock bedecked with an array of pillows and cushions, from where guests can take in the beautiful surrounds.

Accommodating up to 12 guests, the tented rooms are practical, yet comfortable, with four beautifully designed stretch canvas tents on decks, comprising an en-suite indoor bathroom as well as full outdoor open air bathroom.  The Maxa family tent has two bedrooms and a shared ensuite bathroom along with an outdoor bathroom.

Every day at Maxa is curated as a day of exploration and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Camp excursions include mokoro (dugout canoe), guided walking safaris and nature drives (both by day and night). Activities also incorporate local cultural insights with the exploration of the natural heritage of this immensely diverse region.

Access to and from Maxa will be by helicopter from Shinde airstrip, a short yet exciting scenic transfer over breathtaking stretches of the Okavango World Heritage Site.

Botswana: Wilderness Safaris Tubu Tree and Little Tubu

Wilderness Safaris news

We’re thrilled to announce that completely rebuilt Wilderness Tubu Tree and Little Tubu officially reopened on 15 June, just in time for prime game-viewing season in the Okavango Delta.

Set on The Jao Reserve’s famed Hunda Island, the Wilderness Tubu camps overlook spectacular Okavango Delta floodplains. One of the largest areas of dry land in the area, game concentrates on this pristine tract of land, followed closely by an abundance of predators. Recent wildlife sightings during the final stages of the rebuild have been plentiful as ever; leopards lounging in fig trees, lions crossing channels with cubs in tow and hunting buffalo on the plains.

While still honouring their heritage and exquisite natural surrounds, the newly rebuilt camps have been elegantly upgraded; modern guest rooms have been decorated with a palette inspired by the earthy tones and textures of Hunda Island, showcasing horizon-wide views of the wildlife-rich floodplains.

Three new balloons added to our fleet

AirVentures Hot Air Ballooning has added three new hot air balloons to it's fleet, all of which feature the latest technology enhancing the safety of the balloon ride experience. The balloons are all manufactured by Cameron Balloons in the United Kingdom. Cameron Balloons is the largest manufacturer of passenger-carrying balloons in the world and has held this achievement for several decades. With full approval and type certification by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, Cameron Balloons has been the choice of manufacturer for AirVentures since it's inception.

The additional hot air balloons bolster the flight offering of AirVentures, providing a comprehensive range of carrying capacities suitable for large groups, families, friends, and couples. We believe our diverse modern fleet, combined with an exceptional flight experience over the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, positions us well to be your primary choice of balloon operator.

Our African Identity

Our primary balloon fleet was designed as a tribute to an African sunrise, with the warmth of the colour spectrum reflected in the use of reds, oranges and yellow. The intricate pattern used for the balloon "envelope" incorporates the geometric design of tribal artwork, and our baskets are woven in the traditional manner.

Khaki uniforms for ground crew and pilots, continue our safari theme, and our towing vehicles are well suited to traverse the African bush terrain. From our website, to our logo, from our flight confirmations, to our certificates, we focus on the detail that ensures we provide an experience that encompasses all that is great about Africa.

Beautiful Flying Areas

Cradle of Humankind (World Heritage Site):

We are the only balloon operator to launch our balloons centrally within the Cradle of Humankind, and to offer a full flight experience within the 53 000 hectare world heritage site. Proclaimed a world heritage site in 1998, this protected area is predominately made up of large private game reserves, it contains 13 fossil sites, and has over one third of all hominid fossil finds in the world. With minimal human impact, this area is a true wilderness gem to fly in.

Magaliesberg:

Renowned for ballooning, this picturesque area boasts a range of mountains that are almost a 100 times older than Everest , and are literally thousands of millions of years old. An area of significant South African and geological history, its vastness and beauty can only really be appreciated from the air. Like the Cape vulture that soars in the thermals around these mountains, a hot air balloon ride is un-paralleled in its ability to provide silent, 360 degree visibility.

Okavango Delta (World Heritage Site) - Botswana:

AirVentures is the sole licensed provider of hot air balloon safaris over the Okavango Delta, operating over the remote North Western region. We provide the opportunity for you to experience the epitome of a balloon safari, drifting over one of Africa's great wilderness destinations. A unique landscape flooded with water interspersed with winding channels, dotted with islands and surprisingly large expanses of woodland forests. This age old adventure explores the Okavango Delta in a completely unique way, offering a 360 degree panoramic view from tree top level to a thousand feet in the air.

Okavango Balloon Safaris

Seloko Plains (Chobe Region) – Botswana

The Seloko Plains is a vast concession in the the Chobe Region. Situated 45 minutes south of the town, Kasane, the Seloko Plains are an important wildlife corridor, extending from Zimbabwe to join up with, the Chobe National Park, and the Kasane Forest Reserve. A diverse habitat with large tracts of forest which open up into wide open grassland plains, the area offers a variety of wildlife species to be viewed from the hot air balloon.

Botswana: water situation in the Okavango Delta

Bush greetings to you all,

I hope this post finds you well and excited about peak season. This year has certainly flown, and it is hard to believe we are halfway through the year.

Let's dive into the latest updates on the camps and water situation in the Okavango Delta.

Regarding the flood waters in the Okavango Delta, we are experiencing normal to below-average levels, with timing right on schedule, if not slightly delayed. The eastern side of the delta is once again receiving water earlier, and in larger quantities, similar to last year, while two years ago, more water flowed to the west.

As for our camps, I'm delighted to inform you that Machaba Camps and Gomoti Plains Camp currently have water, and it's steadily rising. Both camps currently offer mokoro excursions, and Gomoti Plains Camp will begin motorboat trips within three to four weeks.

Meanwhile, Kiri Camp is still awaiting the arrival of water. However,  the flood waters have just passed Xaxaba (further North) and it is expected to pass Kiri Camp on the Boro River system within the next two weeks. Mokoro activities should be available by the end of this month. Subsequently, the Kiri channel will fill, and water should be in front of the camp by August.

As in the previous year, we anticipate being able to offer water activities at all camps until the end of October. Gomoti Plains Camp had mokoro trips until December of the previous year, and Machaba Camp offered year-round mokoro experiences with no interruptions.

Moving on to the Chobe floodplains, there is an abundance of water, and the views from Ngoma Safari Lodge are breathtaking. The Chobe River is already attracting a vast array of wildlife.

On another note, the water flow at Victoria Falls reached its peak on May 27, with an average of 2,718 cubic meters per second cascading into the gorge.

In Zimbabwe - Hwange National Park, expect to witness impressive elephant herds again as it is relatively dry, and this season will exert pressure on the waterholes. Furthermore, the resident lion pride at Deteema Springs has welcomed new cubs, and like last year, they are frequently spotted around camp.

At Verney's Camp, the water hole is teeming with wildlife, particularly elephants, creating a captivating spectacle. In the Valley, Mana Pools National Park looks splendid. Mana River Camp and Ingwe Pan Camp resumed operations in May after the rainy season hiatus, offering morning or evening canoe trips on the Zambezi, game drives, and walking safaris.

Overall, it's a prime time to visit Africa.

As we proceed through the year, thank you for your unwavering support. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you require any further information.
