Namibia: historical Café Treffpunkt in Swakopmund - 1978 bombing & closure

New York Times

WINDHOEK, South‐West Africa, Dec. 30, 1978 (AP) - A powerful bomb exploded today in a crowded bakery and delicatessen in the coastal resort town of Swakopmund, injuring at least 37 people, the police here reported.

Maj. Gen. Victor Verster, the police commissioner, said two of the injured were in serious condition. All but two of the injured were whites, he said.

Swakopmund, 170 miles west of Windhoek, the South‐West African capital, has drawn thousands of tourists from elsewhere in the territory and from neighboring South Africa for the Christmas‐New Year's holiday period.

News24

Bomb in Swakopmund

1978/1980 I was employed by the Rossing Uranium mine about 68km east of Swakopmund. It was a Saturday morning and my turn to work dayshift. The Saturday day shift was the worst shift of the week. The shift is from seven in the morning to about three in the afternoon. Mine busses convey the workers to the mine and back home again.

The shift was rather quiet without any major breakdowns and production was running according to the target. I remained in the workshop tea room with the coms. radio beside me while reading some or other text book.

The radio burst into life informing all listeners that a bomb had exploded in Swakopmund in a German Café: Putterson's Café. It stated several persons were severely injured and some of the injured were taken to the local hospital.

The previous evening my wife’s cousin and family had come to visit us. They were tired and decided to sleep over before making the 32km trip to Walvis Bay. It had become a tradition for the wife and I to visit the Café every  Saturday when I was not working: The Café was usually packed with locals and visitors. The main attraction was the tea and the brotchens (rolls) with their unique German polony.

A few seconds after hearing the radio call I remembered that I had apologised to my wife because I could not accompany her to the Café that Saturday. She told me not to worry because she would take her cousin and his wife to the Café as they had not been there before.

They would use my vehicle for transport due to the cousins vehicle having no fuel in it and was parked close to the police station.

On realizing what had transpired |I went almost crazy on the mine. Other people were running around hysterical because the telephone lines were jammed. Some were leaving the job because they had private transport.  Later, about midday, I received a message from the production foreman that my wife had phoned the mine to tell me all was ok. It felt like I was woken up from the dead.

The mine bus left earlier that day.

There was a tangible silence hanging over Swakopmund when I reached my home.

My wife told me her side of the story: They had indeed decided to visit the Café and first went to her cousin’s stranded car to see if all was ok. The cousin was one of those guys that had to inspect everything: The doors, windows, wheels, paintwork and contents of the boot. etc, etc. Due to the parking areas being crowded they walked the short distance to the Café.

They were walking on the wrong side of the road and decided to cross the road walking at a wide angle to the café. As they neared the Café a loud whoofing sound was heard followed by a massive bang sounding like a roll of thunder.

People were bodily blown over the street: A man came out of the destroyed building with wooden slivers stuck in his back. The percussion had brought the ceiling down causing additional injuries.

Had they walked further on the wrong side of the road and then crossed they would have walked into the teeth of the blast. A forensic investigation indicated the bomb was placed on the window sill inside the building. The aim was to get at the customers and passers-by.

After the blast and some order reigned they noticed that most of the cars had flat tyres on one side. Apparently caused by wooden splinters. A Merc sports model was a complete write-off.

Had they not stopped at the stranded car they would probably have walked into the blast or been inside the building.

I am not too certain but believe the bombers, about 4 were shot dead some days later.

Namibia: Swakopmund harbour & old lighthouse | Старый маяк Свакопмунд Намибия

Did you know - Swakopmund used to have a harbour?

Well, that’s why Swakopmund has a lighthouse that is visible from afar, thus built to guide ships into Swakopmund. the symbol of Swakopmund.

The Swakopmund Lighthouse was constructed in July 1902. A hill a little further away from the pier and the beach was chosen as the location. Because of the rough surf, the lighthouse was not built directly on the beach or even off the coast. The basic form of the 11.5m high lighthouse was built from hewn stones.

Today, the lighthouse no longer serves to guide ships into Swakopmund but instead serves as a navigational aid to all ships approaching and departing the port of Walvis Bay, in conjunction with the lighthouse at Pelican Point.

The Swakopmund Lighthouse is a landmark enjoying international prominence. It is a coveted object for photography, postcards, and other artwork such as painting. It is also right next to the Swakopmund State House and towers over the Mole area, which is a focal point of tourism and other recreational activities.

Walvis Bay Salt Holdings (Pty) Ltd, through its various subsidiaries, is the largest producer of solar sea salt in sub-Saharan Africa. The Company processes 90 million m3 (cubic meter) of seawater per annum to produce in excess of 900 000 tons of high-quality salt per annum. The total operation covers an area of 5000ha.

The Group exports to various countries, including Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa and Europe.

In addition to producing salt for the chemical industry and other general purposes the Group also produces high quality table salt for the Southern Africa market. The salt operation at Walvis Bay Salt Holdings comprises three companies, Salt & Chemicals (Pty) Ltd, Walvis Bay Salt Refiners (Pty) Ltd, and Ekango Salt Refiners (Pty) Ltd.

Salt & Chemicals operates the salt field and produces the raw salt, whilst Walvis Bay Salt Refiners further processes and markets the product internationally. Ekango Salt Refiners produces table salt for various local and international markets.

Established in 1964, the Walvis Bay Salt Holdings Group today is a Namibian registered company, consisting of three subsidiaries.

During 1976 Sentrachem acquired a 50% shareholding in the business. The salt field was also expanded to a total capacity of ± 370kt at that time. Additional evaporation ponds and a new wash plant was also added. In 1988 Sentrachem acquired the remaining 50% shareholding from SWAFIL and the annual production capacity was further increased to 450kt per annum.

In 1999 the Company took a significant step forward in improving its strategic infrastructure by purchasing a loading facility in the Port of Walvis Bay from the then Tsumeb Copper Limited. The capacity of the pans was further expanded in 2000 and 2001 to 600kt per annum.

Further optimization of the business since then resulted in the salt field’s current capacity being in excess of 900 000 tons per annum, dependent on evaporation rates. The business is currently going through exciting times and the new focus is on value addition both locally and internationally.

In the salt industry efficiency of freight and transport are essential for success. The company’s achievements also flow from our passion for continued development of our human capital, ongoing respect for the delicate natural environment and consideration of the interests and well-being of our community in which we operate. The salt production process is intertwined with nature and cannot continue without the following resources:

The land situated in the Kuiseb river delta area, which is a declared Ramsar Wetland of International Importance

The clay silt and sand used for pond embankments, pond walls and roads;

The seawater, the main raw material, is used for the extraction of common salt; and

Sun and wind energy for the evaporation of water to crystallize the sodium chloride.

Although the availability of some resources seems infinite, it instills in the company a deep sense of respect and responsibility for and commitment towards the environment. Walvis Bay Salt Holdings translates this respect and responsibility towards the environment by seeking excellence in environmental management, performance and conformance.

Namibia: Flash floods have wiped out EHRA Base Camp!

19 February 2022

Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA)

Absolute nightmare - Flash floods have wiped out EHRA Base Camp!

We are in complete shock.

After being, initially, so elated by the recent rains, we are absolutely devastated having received nightmare news and footage from our camp team.

Base camp has essentially been wiped out by the force of water roaring down off the surrounding area - including a vehicle & trailer being actually picked up by the force of the water, dragged into the path of the river, carried 300 metres downstream, and buried up to the steering wheel in mud.

The entire valley coming from the main road transformed into a river! Can you imagine?

Thank goodness nobody is hurt!

Rachel has just left with a back up team to assess the full extent of the damage and to take provisions to the stranded team.

The Uis to Khorixas road is currently officially closed, as; parts of the road have washed away, the bridge over the Ugab has partly collapsed and more rain is expected…

…she will let us know more as soon as she gets through….

Remember the Pleasure Dome?.. The securable store containing our high value equipment is GONE and the elephant protection walls for the borehole have been destroyed. Also the elephant dam is gone.

As per the photos, the sleeping platform has been mutilated almost beyond recognition...

The base camp team currently have limited food & water and are sheltering on high ground in tents belonging to an adjacent camp (thank you Tracks & Trails).

We will keep you posted once we hear more news!

This is so hard to fathom... So difficult to comprehend the extent of this disaster.

Any help is always so welcome thank for all your incredible support!

Namibia: old fort at Spitzkoppe Mountain | Старый форт у горы Шпицкоппе в Намибии

Spitzkoppe Mountain

Prior to 1884, Spitzkoppe was frequented by indigenous pastoralists and hunter-gatherers and subsequently by the Germans who established a quarantine station that was free of the highly contagious fatal African Horse Sickness. Between 1880 and the outbreak of the Rinderpest epidemic (which decimated cattle herds) in 1897, Spitzkoppe became increasingly important as a way-station on the transport route between Swakopmund and the interior.

YouTube video of Spitzkoppe Village:

The Deutsche Kolonial Gesellschaft wagon transport and trading station, depicted in the archival photograph, was built during the 1890s. The barren area which surrounded the station in 1896 contrasts with the matched image which documents the recovery of this site during the last 140 years. The site is now part of a Community Conservancy where livestock have recently been excluded.

The Spitzkoppe (German for "pointed dome", also referred to as Spitzkop, Groot Spitzkop or the "Matterhorn of Namibia") is a group of bald granite peaks or inselbergs located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib Desert of Namibia.

YouTube video of Spitzkoppe Mountain:

The granite is more than 120 million years old and the highest outcrop rises about 1,728 metres above sea level. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 670 m above the floor of the desert below. A minor peak, the Little Spitzkoppe, lies nearby at an elevation of 1,557 m. Other prominences stretch out into a range known as the Pontok Mountains.

Camping is provided by Spitzkoppe Camp.

YouTube video of Spitzkoppe Camp:

Many examples of Bushmen artwork can be seen painted on the rock in the Spitzkoppe area. The Spitzkoppe Mountains were also the filming location for 2001: A Space Odyssey in the "Dawn of Man" sequences.

° Impressive swimming pool behind the courtyard

Kashana is based in a historic building constructed in 1907 as a casino for local mine-workers. It is thought that the house probably gained its name from the surrounding bush savannah which resembled a wide open plain or 'Kashana' in the Owambo language.

Tikoloshe Arts & Crafts Omaruru town YouTube video:

The years took their toll on the building and after painstaking restoration to its former glory it once again reflects its German colonial heritage and was re-opened in 2007.

Today, the building is the centre-piece of a Lodge-style Guesthouse with a novel and attractive bar and a popular all-day à la carte restaurant, frequented not only by residents, but also by passing travellers and local townspeople, all enjoying the tranquil shade of the garden courtyard.

Kashana’s restaurant offers a delightful Namibian culinary experience for individuals and groups.

You are welcome to join us for lunch, coffee or an exquisite dinner with the opportunity to sample our select wine list.

Namibia: translocation of Swakopmund elephant

SWAKOPMUND ELEPHANT

Wildlife Vets Namibia recently purchased own specialized elephant crates consisting of 2 transport crates, and a wake-up crate. Soon after their arrival in Namibia, they could put the equipment to work. At the request of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) and N/a’an ku sê we captured and translocated the “Swakopmund” elephant.

It is a bit of a mystery where this ‘beach boy’ came from. He was first seen at a farm in the Otjiwarongo area in Sep/Oct ’19. After that he disappeared for a while, and around Christmas ’19 he was spotted at the coast. He was in very poor condition and dehydrated. Thanks for the MEFT and a couple of donors who provided food and water, he recovered well. MEFT placed a tracking collar on him to monitor his movements, and lured him inlands. He settled for a while in the Omaruru river area, but soon returned to Swakopmund again. Several attempts to lure him back inland failed. He made the Swakop river and Rossmund Golf Club his new “home”.

He frequented the same areas where people ride their bikes and walk their dogs. Taxi drivers doubled up as tour guides, taking tourists in on foot to see the elephant. The “suitable” elephant habitat in the area is extremely limited, which would result him running out of food. Needless to say, his next feeding ground would be the gardens of Swakopmund. This was a situation where an accident waited to happen and we all know that the elephant would be blamed, and likely get shot... Health issues for the elephant were the high salt content of the water, as well as the fact that some of the vegetation in the area is toxic when eaten in high dosages – he recently had bouts of diarrhea likely caused by these factors. For his own wellbeing, the decision was made by MEFT to translocate him, and we could facilitate the capture and translocation process.
Ulf darted the elephant from an MEFT helicopter, and once he was immobilized, a crane truck picked him up. Now the difficult time started… getting out of the sand! Luckily we had some heavy machinery on stand-by who helped us to get to the elephant crates.

The elephant was closely monitored during the whole procedure, and was injected with a vitamin booster, a tranquilizer and we vaccinated it with Rhinovax (against anthrax and clostridium). The elephant was brought to the wake-up crate. The crane lifted him on a piece of conveyor belt, and he was pulled into the wake-up crate. Then we woke him up. When he was standing, we opened the doors, so he could walk into the transport crates.
Then it was time to undertake the 420 km journey to its final destination! To avoid unnecessary delays at the road blocks, all members of the capture team were tested for signs of COVID-19 and we had a start to finish escort by the Nampol Traffic Division.
Around 19:00 we arrived at the N/a’an ku sê reserve. The elephant was released into a specially built elephant pre-release boma, where he could rest, be monitored closely and gets used to the electric fencing. He disembarked very quietly, and quickly disappeared into the bush. He was kept in this boma for 36 hours, and was then released into the 7500-ha reserve itself.

The reserve has elephant-proof fencing, and after the good rains the vegetation is lush and green so there is plenty of food around. The elephant remains State property. The bull is doing well so far and is enjoying all the grass!
We would like to express our gratitude to the MEFT, N/a’an ku sê, Cowboy's Trading & Rental Solutions, Swakopmund Hire Sales and Services cc, the Nampol Traffic Division, health officials and all others who were involved in this operation. It was a big team effort, many thanks!
With our new elephant crates, we now are really capable of translocating any species! If you want to make use f our services, you are welcome to contact us anytime.
