Okavango Expeditions

New MmaTsebe Tented Camp north of Khwai - opening Apr 2024

Introducing the NEW MmaTsebe Tented Camp

Opening 1 Apr 2024 in Khwai

MmaTsebe Tented Camp is named after Mmatsebe, the iconic leopardess of Moremi – a leopard whose life became synonymous with Khwai.  Mmatsebe, meaning "ear marked", was loved by all and was quite the celebrity during her time in fact your photo of a leopard in Khwai could very much be that of Mmatsebe. Her cubs still roam the forests and floodplains of Khwai to this very day.

MmaTsebe Tented Camp Directors are all veterans of the Botswana tourism scene. Greg & Kelly Butler, formally of Khwai Private Reserve for 19 years, have vast experience in owning and operating first class camps and lodges.

Pieter Ann Sollitt and Clint Gielink have run Okavango Expeditions for 15 years & have a reputation of delivering simply some of the best safari experiences in the industry.  They have come together to create MmaTsebe Tented Camp and in the near future a circuit that brings exceptional quality at very reasonable rates.

The camp is situated approximately 8km north of Khwai Village along the Mbudi channel flowing from the Khwai River and the Okavango River further north.

The camp faces west offering iconic African sunsets.   Buffalo, elephant and hippo are regular residents in camp along with kudu, impala, lion, leopard, hyena and wild dogs.

Access to MmaTsebe Tented Camp is via air with the Khwai airstrip located a short drive from camp and road transfers from Maun, all intended to offer our guests a fabulous experience with very affordable rates.

The camp offers peaceful mekoro excursions along the Mbudi Channel in front of camp and game drives early morning and late afternoon into the Moremi Game Reserve.

Under One Botswana Sky introduces game drives at Moremi Crossing and Gunn's Camp

Under One Botswana Sky is extremely excited to announce the immediate introduction of game drives at both Moremi Crossing and Gunn’s Camp.
With water levels lower than usual there are greater expanses of unexplored land mass within our concession that offer perfect opportunities for great game driving.
This new additional activity will be available during the drier cycles when water activities may become more limited. In high water our guests will once again get to enjoy very popular mekoro, boat cruises and fishing for the ultimate Delta experience.
Walking Safaris on the famous Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve, as well as within the concession, in combination with seasonal mekoro remain the highlight and a year-round activity.
The introduction of game drives adds even more value to these well priced Delta camps popular with smaller groups, families or travelers looking for more intimate Delta experience.
Points to note:
° Game drives started today
° Game drives take place in a private concession
° Morning and late afternoon drives with sundowners
° Gunn’s Camp maximum 6 guests per vehicle
° Moremi Crossing maximum 9 guests per vehicle
° No private vehicle option
° Game drives are offered as one activity only per night’s stay
In addition, this is the only area where guests can book “a night or 2 in the wilderness” – an adventurous and rustic experience in our bush camp – Adventure Camping.  This is now available year round and must be prebooked.  The nights spent in the wilderness must be in between at least one night at Gunn’s Camp/Moremi Crossing on either side of the camping.

Botswana: Baines Camp

SANCTUARY BAINES' CAMP

- A small Botswana camp with a bold personality -

Perched above the Boro River in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Sanctuary Baines’ Camp and its stilted, standalone suites have been transformed with larger spaces, extended decking, welcoming in the surrounding wilderness, and bold artistic interiors. This papyrus-framed luxury camp doesn’t simply overlook the world-famous Okavango Delta, it ensures guests feel fully part of this extraordinary wildlife-rich ecosystem where desert meets wetland.

SUPREME SECLUSION IN THE WILDERNESS

The six raised abodes at this very boutique camp have light and airy bedrooms opening out onto curved terraces overlooking the river. As intimate as this light-footed camp feels, there’s still an impressive sense of scale with high windows letting in the bright African sun and framing those endless Delta horizons. Connecting so deeply with nature couldn't be more effortless or relaxing, and couples will relish the feeling of sharing this only with one another.

STAR BATHS AND SKY BEDS

After an exhilarating game drive, returning at dusk, nothing is more tranquil than an indulgent soak in the Star Bath, a unique freestanding bathtub on each private terrace, now a permanent feature. The suites’ four-poster beds roll out for guests to sleep under the clear, starry Delta night skies and hear the murmur of the river and hum of the nocturnal creatures, another unique feature of the camp.

OPEN-AIR LIVING

Discover a world entirely interconnected by wooden walkways – greet the hippos and step straight from the camp’s jetty into a boat. Follow the raised boardwalks and find communal spaces encircling a sculptural earth formation and rising acacia thorn tree. A colourful lounge with cool hanging chairs and intimate seating areas tugs you in one direction, while alfresco dining awaits in the other. Come evening, guests head to the boma to sip on freshly-made cocktails from the bar and unwind by the glow of the fire before sitting down to an expertly prepared meal abundant with African spices and flavours.

ARTFUL AFRICAN INTERIORS

Hand-woven rugs, batik-dyed fabrics, characterful ceramics and basket-weave lights inspired by indigenous handicrafts channel the energy and colours of Botswanan culture. This destination’s history and geography is documented through the work of artist, cartographer and explorer, Thomas Baines. Contemporary black-and-white photographs capture and convey some of the native flora and fauna that enliven this awe-inspiring region, along with Pop Art-style African crafts enhancing the storytelling and all-sensory experience.

BIO DIVERSE BUSHWALKS AND BOATING EXPEDITIONS

Safaris in this biodiverse region allow guests to learn about the ecosystem and conservation practices. During the Okavango flood season, traditional mokoro rides can be arranged - keep eyes peeled for the swamp-adapted rare red lechwe antelope, painted reed frogs and slaty egrets. Walk with orphaned elephants, Jabu and Morula, through the bush, guided by renowned specialists Doug and Sandi Groves, watching the animals forage, wallow and amble - together with the Living with Elephants Foundation, Sanctuary Baines' Camp works to secure the long-term future of these majestic giants.

Oddballs' Enclave (Okavango Delta)

The Enclave is on a small island just off the south-western edge of Chiefʼs Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango, and bordering Moremi Game Reserve.
The camp is accessible only by light aircraft. On arrival, you will be welcomed to the island by your private guide, who will remain your guide for the duration of your stay.
Oddballs’ Enclave can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests, in five twin or double bedded mini-Meru tents, making it a classic and intimate camp. The tents are on elevated wooden decks, each with a semi-detached private bathroom with an al fresco bucket shower, and hot and cold running water.
The guest areas have a variety of comfortable seating and a raised viewing deck overlooks the sweep of the Delta – the perfect place to watch the sun or moon rise and view whatever wildlife may be visiting. Meals are enjoyed on the deck with spectacular views across the floodplains to distant island forests.
The  Enclave offers only walking and mekoro (s. mokoro) the traditional dug-out canoe of the swamps. Your private guide (maximum of two guests per guide) was born and raised in the area. He owns his mokoro (the genuine wooden article, no plastic replicas for us) and will take you out in it in the early mornings and afternoons, to nearby islands where he will walk with you to view game and the spectacular landscape that is the Okavango. On request, the camp will pack a picnic lunch for you, allowing you to stay out the whole day.
Walking unarmed amongst the full range of Africa’s wildlife is an experience that will live with you for a long time. Your guide has an intimate knowledge of this landscape and he will share his knowledge of the big and little things that with both surprise and astound you.
