The Rossmund Lodge hosts guests visiting from all over the world as well as business guests. We thought that we would showcase some of the activities available at the coast—fun for locals and visitors alike.

We have a lot of exciting news from the golf course this month. In the world of golf, Jordan Spieth has won two of four majors this year, and has claimed the number one ranking in the world. Tiger seems to have found his mojo, and Gert has been very busy!

In other news, Nancy, Hendrik and Dawie have finished the new menu; the lodge has expanded its on line reach; new monthly events are happening in the clubhouse every month, and lots more!

As a reminder, both the Golf Course Clubhouse Restaurant and Lodge Dining Room offer light lunches and dinners daily with chef specials every now and then.  And all meals as well as platters can be ordered as takeaways, either just for your lunch or dinner or for a party at your own house! Even safari companies looking for ready prepared meals to take along on camping safaris or as light lunches en route, can contact Hendrik.

GOLF COURSE MANAGER’S MESSAGE  (Gert)
Maintenance  Report
St. Andrews has nothing on us! We are in the process of refurbishing our greens. We have just finished work on the ninth hole and our work continues.
We are carrying on with general maintenance, replacing dead spots and freshening up the grass.
We have also  finished work on the 4th  tee box.

GREETINGS FROM THE KITCHEN!
The Rossmund Golf Course happily announces that we have set-tled in with our management team in the restaurant. Nancy has decided to stay on with us and will serve as our Executive Chef, while Dawie will take the helm in the kitchen as Head Chef. Hendrik fills the role of Food and Beverage Manager, co-ordinating conferences and events, thus allowing Dana to focus on marketing going forward.

We have also finalized our menus with a variety that should suit every palate from fun food to fine food. The new menu includes a soup of the day and a Goat’s Cheese Tartlet for starters. A gar-den salad,  Caesar Salad and Cabrese Salad will be on offer with some other goodies available to add. There are a ton of burgers and paninis on offer, which are great for a bite at the turn or a fun lunch for kids of all ages.

Main dishes include some more sophisticated Panini’s like the Panini Monaco with sliced English cucumber, wasabi cream and smoked salmon on a bed of crispy lettuce, and the Panini Godfa-ther. Then there is your basic fish and chips, chicken skewers, chicken schnitzel, beef ribs and a juicy rib-eye steak with roast vegetables and chips.  Several creative pasta dishes are on the menu as well as four desserts including tipsy tart and Creme Brulee! And the kitchen is always ready for a special event!
The restaurant is up, running and approaching cruising speed!

Save the Rhino Trust and Wilderness Safaris Renew Partnership until 2020

Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) and Wilderness Safaris Namibia have strengthened their shared commitment to securing a future for Namibia’s black rhinos by extending their Memorandum of Understanding for a further five years.

In 2003, SRT and Wilderness Safaris began pioneering responsible rhino tourism through a unique partnership whereby SRT would provide a tracking experience for guests at Wilderness Safaris’ Desert Rhino Camp (DRC).

Tourism income supports the SRT team based at DRC and includes a bed-levy donation. Effectively, tourism provides sustainable funding to ensure all the rhino within the DRC area are consistently monitored; 12 years on, this relationship is more critical than ever. The latest MoU also includes support and cooperation at Wilderness Safaris’ Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the Mudorib Gate.

“With poaching intensifying in Namibia, SRT’s relationship with Wilderness Safaris is critical on many levels,” stressed Simson Uri-Khob, CEO of SRT. “Funding from Wilderness allows us to keep another full team of trackers in the field. These trackers monitor rhinos in an important conservation area, raising awareness of the urgent conservation issues facing rhinos with Wilderness Safaris’ international guests; and, critically acting as a deterrent against poaching in these difficult times.”

DRC is situated within the Palmwag Concession in the middle of one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas. SRT has operated in this area since it was founded in 1982 and with the support from local communities, the rhino population has grown and expanded. Wilderness Safaris maintains an exclusive concession area here, with agreements in place with the Big Three conservancies, Torra, Anabeb and Sesfontein, and with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

“There is an important element of security in this exclusive concession agreement,” said Uri-Khob. “We know who should be in the area and who shouldn’t. This helps us protect the rhino.”

“Wilderness Safaris is committed to conservation,” added Mike Wassung, CEO of Wilderness Safaris Namibia. “Our track record of supporting local communities through joint-venture partnerships and providing jobs and training to people who live in the remote areas where we operate helps us to work collectively to uplift communities and that in turn helps to protect Namibia’s natural resources. We are proud of this record and to be a long-term supporter of SRT’s efforts to conserve the world’s last truly wild population of black rhino.”

The partnership between SRT and Wilderness Safaris is a strong example of the importance of Namibia’s private sector and conservation groups working together to protect the country’s natural resources. “We are confident that by working together and strengthening our partnership for at least another five years, we will continue to make a positive contribution to ensure the ongoing survival of our black rhino”, concluded Wassung and Uri-Khob.

NEW LOOK RIVER SHACK, MOSSEL BAY
Recently, a very creative Interior Decorator, Ilze Mostert paid a visit to the River Shack and very successfully transformed the entire house!

She avoided the frills and kept it perfectly down-to-earth and super-quirky which resonates with the vibe of this beautifully secluded shack in Dana Bay. The brilliant use of bold colours and rustic wooden accessories adds an unique charm to an already brilliant setting.

The Last Word Long Beach - transformed

In keeping with its promise of an authentic, five-star experience The Last Word Intimate Hotels conducts regular ‘facelifts’ and The Last Word Long Beach is the latest property in the portfolio to undergo a transformation.

Consistent with the relaxed beachside ambience here, the new American Kravet fabrics from St Leger & Viney achieve the desired modern, luxurious feel in the communal areas, while a palette of sea blues and jades enhances the elegance of the suites.  With the unusual patterns and textures of Jim Thompson’s textiles from Lula Fabrics, the two collections merge to create eclectic, laid-back glamour.

Uninterrupted, panoramic views of the ocean confirm that you are as close as you can get to the water’s edge in Kommetjie – and you’ll understand the reason this six-room, intimate hotel has been the judges’ favourite in the World Travel Awards for South Africa’s Leading Beach Hotel for seven consecutive years. All six luxury en-suite bedrooms are sea facing, while discreet touches such as sun hats – and towels in a beach bag – are assurance that there’s pride and pleasure in charming guests with exclusive experiences. Warm smiles, personal attention and the tranquil setting allow for total relaxation. There’s a certain magic in this hidden gem on the southern tip of Africa. It’s for travellers who enjoy leisurely walks or horse riding along the beach, and nature trails in the mountains; it’s a place where memories are made.

Remains of once beautiful buildings of Voightsgrund farm, a gem of Karakul pelts production in southern Namibia in the beginning of 20th century. The farm was the first producer of pelts but now is in neglected state being government property. Situation got worse in the past eight years, 108 year old farm was stripped of all valuables and vandalized. There are plans to resurrect karakul production but future of initiative is uncertain as it will cost millions just to bring infrastructure back to normal.

Our courses are tailor-made to suit the individual needs of the schools and can last between a few hours to 3 days.

Courses involve basic survival concepts like Bush “GPS” Skills, Fire Making Skills, Bush Cooking Skills, Plant Identification & Uses, Tracking and very importantly Team Work. “Apart from these basics we focus on what nature offers us at that exact time to work with and it keeps the course inter-active” says our Primary Instructor and General Manager of Etosha Village, Hein Vosloo.
