South Africa: Cederberg Wines Western Cape | Вина Седерберг Южная Африка

Cool-climate Wines - Elim, South Africa

Ghost Corner by David Nieuwoudt

A beguiling range of wines inspired by the extreme weather patterns and shaped by the cooling winds that blow in from the ocean at the southern Cape coast (aka the Cape of Storms). The dramatic coastline at Cape Agulhas, where many a ship has been wrecked over the centuries, is known as ‘Spookdraai’ (Ghost Corner). Local folklore claims that the ghosts of the sailors who perished can still be seen wandering the wild waters on dark, stormy nights...

In the nearby maritime ward of Elim the vineyards grow in deep, lime-rich soils with plentiful deposits of slate and gravel, giving rise to the exceptional Ghost Corner wines. The beautifully crafted range comprises a powerful, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc; an enticing Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc with a creamy mouthfeel; a deliciously aromatic Semillon; a complex blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, The Bowline; and an elegant, silky Pinot Noir with earthy undertones.

These intriguing cool-climate wines linger on the palate as they speak eloquently of their origin at this southernmost tip of the Cape winelands.

Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc

R220.00

Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc

A unique Sauvignon blanc that cannot be compared to any other. Powerful concentrated layers of green figs and gooseberries, with a touch of grapefruit, fynbos and a steely minerality on the palate. A reflection of the cool maritime climate of Elim where the grapes are sourced. Lees contact during the winemaking process creates length and richness on the aftertaste, which will progress even more over the next 2 or 3 years. This wine can stand its own against any great seafood or poultry dishes.

Ghost Corner Wild Ferment

R250.00

Ghost Corner Wild Ferment

Naturally fermented sauvignon blanc. Enticing aromas of fleshy white pear and quince with an illusion of sweetness. Ten months barrel maturation gives a creamy, full-palate with beautiful length. Well paired with fresh seafood or a creamy pasta. Best enjoyed right away, but potential to age up to five years.

Ghost Corner Semillon

R200.00

Ghost Corner Semillon

An aromatic Semillon displaying aromas of green fig, white fruit and nettles characteristic of the cool climate in Elim. A distinct minerality with a slight earthiness on the nose that follows through onto the palate. A small amount of French oak adds a hint of smokiness leading to a creamy palate with a crisp acidity. This wine is especially well suited for strong seafood flavours such as yellowtail, scallops or snoek, as well as lightly smoked meat and rich pork dishes.

Ghost Corner Bowline

R230.00

Ghost Corner Bowline

Sailors call the bowline the ‘king of knots’- a strong simple knot that symbolises union, completion and eternal devotion. This white blend ‘ties the knot’ between Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Ripe asparagus notes from the Sauvignon blanc complement the green fig and dusty elements from the Semillon. A complex wine with well-balanced oak with a refreshing, smooth finish. Enjoyed with roast chicken or fresh seafood.

Ghost Corner Pinot Noir

R230.00

Ghost Corner Pinot Noir

A beautifully crafted Pinot noir with prominent red fruit of ripe cherries and sweet raspberries with an undertone of earthy, mushroom nuances. A silky palate with berries and delicate oak components following through. To be enjoyed on its own, but well paired with a mushroom soup or crispy duck and chicken dishes. A wine to be aged for another 3 – 5 years.

A Brief History of Dwarsrivier and the Cellar

The San and Khoi peoples inhabited the Cederberg area from early times, leaving behind a rich legacy of rock art. It was only during the mid-1800s that another tough group of people set foot in the Cederberg – the Nieuwoudt family. The first Nieuwoudts arrived in South Africa during the early 1700s. Nearly 100 years later, their descendants moved to the Cederberg. In 1893 the present family moved to the farm Dwarsrivier, which is also known as Cederberg Private Cellar and Sanddrif Holiday Resort. Six generations ago, no one would have guessed that this rugged, fynbos-covered area on the edge of the Succulent Karoo biome would one day become a high-altitude wine farm in the Cape winelands.

The farm itself lies in the Cederberg Wilderness Area and only 66 ha are under vine. Today, this award-winning winery is owned by David Nieuwoudt – proudly fifth generation. Emma, David’s daughter, is the sixth generation. Many stories have been told about ‘how it all started’. Maybe the first Platter’s guide to South African wines (1980) puts it best: ‘Oom Pollie has confounded the experts by producing prize-winning wines on his farm high in the remote Cederberg Mountains. He first started making wine for the farm workers with table grapes that ripened too late to be taken in by the nearest co-operative. The venture was so successful, he decided to try his hand at making red wine, and the first vintage in 1977, though too small to be certified, was acclaimed by experts as being up to Superior standards’.

The other story goes as follows: There used to be no vines on the farm. A friend, who worked for the Deciduous Fruit Board, noticed that winter fruit was doing really well on this fruit and tobacco farm. He recommended that the family plant table grape vines. This was done in 1965 and these vines did so well that the first wine vines were planted in 1973 – the source of the top-class Cabernet Sauvignon of 1977/8. David’s grandfather, Oom Pollie, and his uncle, Oom Flippie, managed the farm until 1997. During 1997 David took over the reins from Oom Flippie. Oom Pollie passed on during 1988 and Oom Flippie in 2010.

HOW DID YOU START MAKING WINE HERE AT DWARSRIVIER?

Before the political changes of the 1990s, wine farming was an income like any other kind of farming, may it be sheep, fruit or fish. The big names in the industry were well known, of course. Up to 1990 the Nieuwoudts focused on fruit, tobacco, vegetables and livestock. During the 1990s, when sanctions were lifted, farming life changed quite radically and many farmers started specialising. Younger farmers, in many cases, faced huge challenges – the whole world had suddenly become their playground and delivery field. In the Cederberg, David Nieuwoudt returned to the land where he grew up and decided to focus on wine – after all, that was what he had studied and loved. The year? 1997.

THE "WATER STORY": WHAT IS SO INTERESTING ABOUT DWARSRIVIER’S WATER?

All the water used on the farm comes from free-running mountain springs that feed the Dwars River, which originates west of the Sneeuberg Mountain, partly on our land. We do not use any water from the Uitkyk area. When we refer to ‘the farm’ we mean the household water consumption of 29 houses, Sanddrif Holiday Resort, the irrigation system for the vineyards, and the water for the wine cellar and Cederberg Brewery. Sanddrif’s irrigation water comes from another source.

WHAT IS THE GREATER CEDERBERG BIODIVERSITY CORRIDOR?

The Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor (GCBC) is a unique project in the sense that nowhere in South Africa is there an area as large as this that includes the people, their agricultural and other activities, and an unspoilt natural area. The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) financed the initial work for the project. This was so successful that the Global Environment Facility (GEF) donated R1,5 million to fund the implementation phase over five years.

Terroir

The Cederberg lies about 250 km north of Cape Town. This vast region encompasses approximately 162 000 ha of rugged mountainous terrain, stretching from the Pakhuis Pass behind Clanwilliam in the north, to Grootrivier in the south, towards Ceres. Forty six kilometres inland from the N7, between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam – with two mountain ranges separating the farm from the Olifants River – lies Cederberg Private Cellar on the farm Dwarsrivier.

It is the highest wine farm above sea level in the Western Cape. In terms of the SA Wine of Origin (WO) Scheme, the Cederberg ward was proclaimed on 24 February 1978. There are 51 wards in the winelands of South Africa. Take note that Cederberg is one of a few that do not fall under any of the 18 districts or five regions. Why? Simply put, it all boils down to the terroir.

Cederberg Private Cellar is the only wine farm in the Cederberg ward. And do not confuse the commercial wine route system with the Wine of Origin classification system. A wine route is a commercial venture and has nothing to do with the Wine of Origin Scheme. Cederberg Private Cellar does not belong to a wine route and by law resorts under the Cederberg ward.

South Africa: Cederberg Wines Celebrating Mother’s Day | Вина Седерберга Южная Африка

Celebrating Mother’s Day

As Mother’s Day approaches on 9 May next weekend we would like to remind you of our Mother’s Day Collection of wines personally curated by David Nieuwoudt. David picked out these wines remembering his own mother Huibrecht Nieuwoudt who was a shaping force in the establishment of Cederberg Wines and Sanddrif Holiday Resort in South Africa.

"My Ma was my grootste inspirasie en dryfveer in my lewe. Sy het my geleer om my voete op die grond te hou."

- David Nieuwoudt

Ghost Corner Noble Late Harvest 2018

Noble Late harvest is a sweet wine made from Botrytis Cinerea infected grapes, Botrytis Cinerea is a fungus that forms on the berries skin under the optimal conditions such as humidity or misty mornings and then sunny afternoons. The fungus causes the berries to naturally dehydrate and shrivel up leaving the winemaker with the tools to produce the nectar of the Gods. The grapes are hand harvested early mornings from our misty almost ghostly block of Viognier coming in at 53 Balling. We destemmed and crushed the berries and then fermented it on the skins for 14 days. We then pressed the skins and continued the fermentation in a stainless steel tank until the ferment naturally stopped because of the high concentration of sugar. Finally the wine is matured in 400L 4th fill French barrels for 12months and then fined and filtered to become one of only 3400 bottles.

South Africa: Cederberg Wines Latest Longavi Release | Вина Седерберг Южная Африка

Cederberg Wines, South Africa

Latest Longavi Release

A Continental Collaboration

It is with huge excitement that we invite you to purchase wines from the premium Longaví range. Many of them available from online store for the very first time, as sales open at 9 am on 25 March 2021.

These wines are the result of a collaboration between two friends from different continents – Chilean producer Julio Bouchon and South African winemaker David Nieuwoudt, who teamed up to produce premium wine from forgotten vineyards that have now been rediscovered and are proving to be vinous treasures.

After completing the 2013 harvest in South Africa, David winged his way over to South America to do another crush back-to-back. The first resultant wine to land on our shores was the Sauvignon Blanc 2013, a true expression of this cross-continental collaboration. From this promising start, the project grew to include several other bottlings.
